I am going to go to the Coves on Saturday to have some fun on the hills. It is much too nice not to be in a Jeep somewhere.
Here's the deal:
Meet sometime before 9AM for a 9AM sharp departure.
Take Bush Highway (from SR87 or from Mesa) to Butcher Jones Park - part of Saguaro Lake. Go around the parking area of Butcher Jones to the other side and you will see a Green cattle Gate. That is where we will meet and air down. CB channel 4 and/or FRS channel 4.
We will play on the hills there and then go out to FR13 and on to 4 Peaks Road. Maybe take a look at Cottonwood Trail head and Camp. Should be a nice day. This is mostly a 2 with some great hills for those who want to play. Almost always an alternate to those who want to sight see.

Roadless area maps from the Forest Service are posted at:
http://roadless.fs.fed.us/maps/usmap.shtml
The Forest Service has finally published crude maps of the Roadless Areas to
be closed to mechanized recreation. The "Roadless" areas are shown in orange
on each states detail map.
These are areas where the Presidents initiative will close all existing dirt
roads. It is obvious why Idaho & California citizens are not happy with this
initiative.
If you have the chance to view the detail of California, it's a good lesson
in the quantity of Wilderness already set aside, and the additional
"Roadless" demand. This demand for land quantity is what is expected
nationwide. All of it excludes mechanized recreation by management policy.
It is never too late to visit the Blue
Ribbon web site and post the Forest Service and your Congress Persons a
comment demanding abandonment of this initiative.

For those interested, Harbor Freight is having a sale now and they are
selling the 48" hi-lifts for $31.99. Awesome deal. They also have the tire
inflator adaptors (like the ones at the nice gas stations that let you
squeeze the handle and check the air pressure while keeping the chuck on the
valve for $5.97. They normally sell for around $20.00. Lots of other great
stuff too.

I can't make this Sat., but was thinking of heading out Sunday (1/23)...thinking of Jack Handle Trail, which is a fairly new trail that was opened this past ASA Jamboree. It's in the Mineral Mtn Area (SE of Florence Junction), near Martinez Canyon. It's rated a strong 3.5. It's not too long, so we could be back by mid afternoon.
If anyone's up for this last minute run, shoot out a note.

In case you didn't see the message to the group. This is all I could handle on such short notice, but it is a great place to play. If you haven't been there and need better directions, let me know.

______
