At 82,500 miles another light comes on. It isn't the check engine light. I
think it is a
"service required" light. This is the one that tells you to have the
emissions system checked. mainly the cat converter. If the check engine light
is on, you might want to check your oxygen sensor. it might have come
unplugged.

This was one for the record books.
Pictures at: <http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=22547&a=1534472>

1. We met at Scottsdale and Care Free Highway at about 9AM. There were 15
vehicles. 12 Jeeps, a Chevy Pickup (more about him later!!), A Geo/Suzuki,
and a Dodge Pickup (more about him also.)
2. We caravanned to the Pay Station at Bartlett Lake to air down and
disconnect. Quite a site to see all those Jeeps.
3. We made it to the Dunes with no real difficulty, but then the fun began:
4. Peter Wirsh got stuck in the mud. Kevin Mattig, in the brute force Chevy
Pickup performed but one of his many life saving tugs of the day.
5. Scott Kruize busted a mount on his transmission and could only get
reverse. He got stuck going backwards and the tug Jeep got stuck getting
him unstuck. After a bit of digging, rock carrying and even a bit of
swearing, Scott was broken free . He jacked up the transmission and wedged
a 2x6 in there which allowed him to manually shift into gear. After this
episode he limped home and left us on our own. (Yes, Scott was the leader).
6.Jon took over as leader at the request of Aaron, who organized the ride.
More surprises to follow.
7. We made it through the first few tough hills when the Dodge pickup
busted a transmission or transfer case and could only get 2 wheel drive.
Kevin to the rescue. He towed the Dodge pickup the entire rest of the way.
This included some arguably class 3 hills.
8. All in all, I bet there were 15 tows over all. We used 4 tow ropes on
the Dodge pickup in a few places. Three or four on a few others who had
trouble getting up the 5 hills that remained. Each one took about an hour,
as you can imagine, since we still had 14 vehicles.
9. We started at 9AM and were off the trail by about 5PM. Everyone in tact
and whole, with the above exceptions.
10. There were several new comers, Dale and Felix, who, by the way,
performed extremely well on some pretty tough hills. Great going, guys!!!

The hero of the day was the brute force Chevy Pickup of Kevin Mattig. He
never had a problem and he was tugging a full-sized Dodge pickup through
some pretty tough terrain. A Jeep could never have done that and he never
flinched. At the end of the ride he was congratulated and awarded 2 AZ_VJC
decals and honorary membership in the club. He can come on any ride he so
pleases. Many thanks, Kevin. And we don't even know who the Dodge was. He
just showed up for the run. I hope he said thanks. Thanks also go out to
Ross Skinner and a bunch of others who kept the tow ropes working and the
rigs moving. What a day!!

I think I covered it all, but please feel free to add comments about this run.

This trip sounds like a total blast. As for "a JEEP could never do that," I take offense. A small JEEP might not be able to, but my Full-Size might be up to the challenge.

Subject: Mud Springs Trip Report

Those doing this run were myself (modified TJ), Jeff (ZJ w/ Tera lift), and Kevin (ZJ w/ ProComp lift). We hit the trail at about 9am. The first part of the trail is slow and rocky...not particularly difficult, but very scenic. We made the stairs by about 9:30, and had no difficulty and made Mud Springs by about 10.

At Mud Springs is a light class 4 hill, w/ large boulders and pretty heavily washed out areas. It changes a little very time I've been there. My trip to the top was fairly uneventful, though I did lift my left front a bit at the "Dan Weed Champion Wheel Lifting Spot". The ZJ's were next. They are extremely capable off road vehicles, and Jeff and Kevin's were well set up and handled them very well, but they lacked lockers or a limited slip, so the hill was going to be a challenge.

After walking the hill, planning da lines, and scratching da heads, Jeff started up, w/ me spotting. He did very well, getting past the first main obstacle w/ little difficulty. Next was a tricky part, having to go way off camber to get around a large boulder that calling your name. If you go up too high, you'll slide into it, if you go too low, as you maneuver for the next obstacle, your rear quarter is thrown into it. Jeff took a good line, but came very close to creasing his rear quarter panel. As it turned out, he only got a small scrape on his right rear door handle.

Right after the boulder, comes a badly washed out spot, where you have to traverse and rise out to the right. This spot gave Jeff a little trouble...loosing traction, backing up and trying again. On the third try or so, he made it up fine, and went on to the next obstacle, which consists of a spot where you have to get both wheels up on separate boulders, and slowly power up and over. This gave his ZJ some trouble, and he ultimately backed down a little way and took an alternate line, that worked just fine. Shortly after that, he was on top.

Kevin's trip to the top was very similar to Jeff's. At the last main obstacle, Kevin took a different line to the right and almost made it. He got high centered a little and slightly bent his right rocker. He ended up taking the same alternate line as Jeff had and was on the top.

At this point, we broke for lunch, taking in the spectacular views.

We pushed on over some rough and washed out trail and came to the Last Chance Boulder Field. This is a trail section that is strewn w/ many large boulders and is a class 4. Since the ZJ's were running open, we collectively decided to turn back at this point.

The trip back was uneventful, except at the hill. Going down it is a rush. Off camber pucker factor all the way. There are several spots that can roll you very easily...so we all took it very slowly. Jeff pinched closed his tail pipe, and had a slight rocker scrape on the way down. At the base of the hill, a quick swipe of a hack saw fixed the tail pipe.

We made it back to the trail head by about 3:30. All in all a most excellent run.

Doug

Subject: FR42....A full day of Arizona fun

First of all, boy did we have a fun day. The kids were worn slick, they played in the dunes and with other kids on the trail all day.. (I was worn down to the metal). What a great bunch of people. Well. Scott K. got out easy after leading us into the lions den and then faking his transmision disconnecting. (Don't know how he did it.:-). The trail was not bad except for one small issue, a Dodge Midsize about 5 vehicles from the back slammed down on his front end and lost his front wheel drive. It became a nice looking sled at that point. Don't remember their names but they were nice guys and I want to thank all of the people who worked hard all day to get them out of there. Woody who was driving a Chevy step side setup very well managed to pull that Dodge and just about everyone else at least once through 90% of FR42. Everyone helped and it showed what this sport is all about. And guess what, we were helping non-Jeep drivers as well.
I know this is a bit long but bear:-) with me. In the entire group of 17 or so Jeeps there were two that had locked diffs, Scott and my CJ7. Everyone else made it through working it the hard way. I know I learned alot and I hope others did as well, a stock Jeep will get you about anywhere, it just needs a bit of help at times. To make it even more fun lets all work on being a bit more ready every time we go out, I know I need to. Things like tow hooks, tow lines, disconnects and a few other things and it makes it go much easier( not too easy, then it would be boring). I am not critcising, just want to share some ideas. Thanks for reading this I know it was work for my 4 fingers to type. Thanks for the fun day and Deb and our 5 boys are ready to hit it again now that I got 10 hours of sleep.
Jon Loveless, thanks for the great man on the scene work with that recorder, next time please don't get such good shoots of my CJ buried to the floor, Bill Mish will never let me here the end of it.

Larry - A number of the Jeeps on FR42 only had a driver. One of the great things about this club is that everyone is there to help everyone else. Many of the Jeeps on FR42 needed spotters since the trail has become a jungle of holes and berms, especially on the hills. The line is important and we didn't move on to the next hill until everyone was safely through. That is why it took 8 hours to do a 15 mile run. The early climbers parked and came back to spot for (and in some cases set up tow ropes and in a the case of the Dodge pickup, even drive for them) anyone who need a spotter. Never fear about coming out on an AZ_VJC run alone. I think I speak for most in the group when I say that is what we are all about.

Jon,

One thing that has kept me from making a few of the runs with AZ_VJC was
that I cant find anyone to go with me... I'm worried about the lack of a

spotting in tight spots?

Was there any solo drivers on the trail 42 run today?

Thanks,

This trip sounds like a total blast. As for "a JEEP could never do that," I
take offense. A small JEEP might not be able to, but my Full-Size might be
up to the challenge.

Well this was my first time out after joining azjvc and I assure you it won't
be my last! I had such a great time yesterday. I'd like to thank Doug for
an excellent job of spotting, I have a feeling without his spotting I'd be
missing a few doors and windows on my passenger side, not to mention who
knows what else.
I'd also like to point out that I crunched my tail pipe "on purpose" so I'd
have a reason to cut some of it off...I think it now has a throatier sound to
it =)

I'm the guy that gave you the Beanie Baby to return to the nice 7 year old
girl (Jackie?) that loaned it to my 5 yr old son. I remember that the driver
of the TJ was Andy. If he doesn't reply, I guess you'll have a new
"4-wheeling" mascot till you meet it's owners on a run :-)

Hey all,

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone this weekend for showing up. The girls pointed out that at the beginning of the run, there were 15 Jeeps and two non-Jeeps. John, thanks for leading the group after Scott had to bail. I had a complete blast and met some really wonderful people. I hope to see you all out on the trail again soon. I just gave the TJ a bath so it will be ready for a dust trail again soon :-). Have a great week everyone.
