Tricia and I are taking our 2 dogs into Bulldog Canyon Sunday. We will
probably go in to the turnoff and then do some hiking/dog walking before we
head out. 3 to 4 hours. Meet at 10AM at the Usery Pass entrance off Bush
Highway. I will post the GPS waypoint and location tomorrow.

I have a pass to Bulldog, and it is much too nice to stay at home and watch
NFL stuff. If interested, drop me a reply.

82,500 miles. At that point the factory service manual states that the
entire
emissions system should be checked. I took my ZJ to the dealer and paid the
$70 to have the light turned off --- they just reset the computer, but you
still get to pay for an hour's worth of work at the shop rate. After I
forked
over the money, the mechanic at the dealership suggested (1) putting a peice
of electric tape over the light or (2) removing the bulb.

I think the owner's manual (at least for the ZJ) states that not checking
the
emissions system can get you in trouble with the law. Yeah right! The worse
that couold happen is that you won't pass emissions on the first trip.

Quite a few people have asked for this info so here ya go.....

http://www.onboardair.com/

As you will see the page is still being constructed but the contact info is
there. 99+ TJ's use different setup and Im not sure Brad has the parts for
those years yet.

Some examples of a dual setup....
http://members.home.net/bdokken/oba2.htm

http://www.harryworld.com/harry/york.html

Personally, I think the York compressor is way too big for a TJ's engine
compartment. The York is nice because it has it's own oil resevoir where as
most other compressors get lubricated from the oil in the freon mixture. I
would rather squirt a little oil in a smaller compressor once every few
months rather then try to squeeze that giant York in a TJ's engine
compartment.

If any one does go with the dual AC/air setup keep us posted and take pics.

Regards,
Larry

It dissapoints me that the people at that magazine think this way. I think

Hi all. I have just recently purchased a '89 Cherokee and have begun some work on the areas needing attention. Most of the work is just performing routine maintenance and getting to know any of the weak spots. I would appreciate any guidance that members may have:

1. The rearend sags...what a shame...I guess I will have to lift it. I am wanting to do about 3". Any guidance on Kits? I would like to replace the rear springs instead of using the add-a-leafs, unless I get good feedback on the add-a-leafs. I would also like to keep surprises down to a minimum, such as driveline and/or steering problems, and $$$$.

2. There is a wonderful little plastic coolant bottle under the hood that I know will leak this summer...any ideas on where to get an upgrade to this weak link?

I am sure there are some XJ owners out there that have been through these problems already. Thanks for any help in advance.

Thanks,

The only real upgrade that I have found for this is to replace the
radiator with one from 91+ XJ. As far as them leaking I've found that
if you put a shop towell under the bottle they seem to last a lot
longer. The cooling system design makes it a pain to get the radiator
filled but once you do it doesn't work too bad.

Darin,

(knocking on wood) I haven't had a tail-dragger yet with my XJ, but agree
that they do need a lift. I haven't come across the "ultimate setup" of
about 3" that I am looking for, but am pretty sure that it will be
something that includes:
Slip-yoke eliminator (probably Rubicon Express)
New rear driveshaft (duh...slip yoke is gone) <G>
New rear springs (not just an add-a-leaf)
New front springs (not spacers)
New, longer lower control arms
Bushings 'R us. The existing rubber and poly doesn't inspire confidence
anymore.
Optional:
Gas tank skid (most likely Tomken)
Steering and oilpan skids

As for the plastic radiator bottle, I played that game awhile back, and
after talking to Mike Ford at Earnhardt's Parts Counter, we came up with
a cushion for the bottle. He has had some clients pad theirs, but has no
part to do it with. I had just replaced my hoses, so still had the old
one. I cut a 4" or so section out, and split it lengthwise. This goes
under the new bottle, and helps keep it from vibrating on the metal
shelf, which causes a lot of the cracks.

The other option is to replace the radiator and catch bottle with a 92 or
later assembly. This will involve multiple parts, so I would recommend
checking out and comparing the two models side by side to compare. Four
Wheeler did a swap like that about two years ago, so they may be able to
tell you what issue it was in. I have most of the mage from about 1990
on, so if you can find what issue you need, I will try to find the
article.

Good luck to you,

I dont know if this also works for ZJ's, but on the TJ's if you turn the
ignition switch on/off/on/off/on (pretty fast, i think it has to be within 5
seconds) the check engine light will flash an error code of what the
problem is.. according to the computer anyhow. I have the cross reference
table written down if anyone wants it.

Well we have a new(old) baby in the family. We picked up a 79' CJ7 for my oldest boy today. So, we will be there with the 79' and my 84' CJ7. The 79' is pretty stock but it is going to be fun. Now we can Jeep with the whole family, Deb the five boys and I. Not exactly your typical couple with a Jeep and a Dog...:-)
We have been very busy with our business so this is our first chance to get out with the group in months. It looks like there are a lot of new faces in AZVJC now, we are looking forward to meeting them and seeing their Jeeps.
I heard it was 8:30am for the rendezvous, is that right.

Last I heard it was 9AM - I guess that means depart the shopping center at 9AM. Yes, Scottsdale and Carefree Hgwy (SR74). It is an Abco food store, I think. Looks like there is going to be a great turn out.

1) The lift kit should include new rear springs.....not add-a-leafs! Blocks are okay, but new springs are better. I ran the Trailmaster lift kit whit add-a-leafs. I was never happy with it as the add-a-leafs broke. I cannot emphasize enough...NEW springs. The blocks will also relocate the rear sway bar dangerously close to the tire....of course, you may want to remove these for added flexibility.
2) The coolant bottle is definitely a weak link....but it leaks before breaks. I have had two XJs (88/89) and run them over 400k and never had a bottle break, and only had to replace 2 leaky ones. Not bad for the AZ desert. I always carry a spare bottle and cap. I picked these up at AMC 4x4 at 67th Ave and Glendale for ~$30.

I am sure there are some XJ owners out there that have been through these problems already. Thanks for any help in advance.

Hello Darin,
I own a 87 XJ, 4.0 I6, auto. I have used a Rancho 3" lift, and found it to
be very disappointing. With the add-a leaf rear,it ruined my springs to make
it really saggy. The front didn't loose any lift, but was really stiff. That
was ok, but I did change it later.
I replaced my Rancho after about two years. I used RE 4.5 spring pack with
1.5 greaseable shackles in the rear and RE 4.5 coils in front. I used RE
lower control arms as well as RE upper control arms, and their adjustable
trackbar. Do this day I have had no vibrations, so I have not installed an
SYE yet. I am running 32x11.50's and have good clearance and articulation. I
have done other mod's as well. If I can help you in any way, feel free to
write.
Great to have you along.
Check out this page. It is for XJ's only.

I have it, as to several others in the club. I like it very much...it's compact, easy to remove when not in use, and has good range and reception. My only suggestion is that you get an external speaker, since the speaker mike is pretty small and a little hard to hear. I picked up some cheap Radio Shack outdoor stereo speakers, wired 'em for mono and have 'em mounted on my roll bar, right overhead...to the right of my ear. Loud and clear.

If your shopping, check out www.jcre.com . They have pretty good prices.

I also have this model for my YJ. I too agree that an external speaker
would be helpful (although I don't have one yet). I orderd my from
JCRE and paid about $112 including 2 day shipping. I use a 4'
Firestick II with mine (about $40 with wiring).

I mounted the connector in my dash in the panel under my gauges. It
looks fine and is out of the way. Best part is you can remove the
expensive part when not in use.
