What year XJ? Which motor? EGR valves are usually pull off the hose, pull out the EGR valve and replace. Done. Vatozone usually has them, but with the 4.0 newer motors, they do not have an EGR valve. Just vent tubes.

to test is simple pull off the hose to where egr connects suck on it and feel the back of the valve to see if the diaphram moves

even more simple is to press in on the diaphragm if it easily goes in its good if its difficult its bad. also seeing as you have a '89 your transducer could be bad. it is the black flying saucer held in place by vacuum lines. idk how to test it. both my xj's transducer was broken so i just replaced them.

how much is a transducer? i just got a new egr valve, so will it matter if the transducer is broken?

did it not come with one? i thought when you buy the EGR you got a transducer too. take a pic and post it
