Subject: Re: Steering box

I went and bought the Chilton and it has the instructions. I have not
done it yet but I will type what it says.

**WARNING**
ADJUSTMENT MUST BE MADE IN THE ORDER GIVEN. FAILURE TO FOLLOWING
SEQUENCE COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE GEAR.

1.Check that the steering gear mounting bolts are properly torqued.
2.If necessary, remove the front stabilizer bar.
3.Matchmark and remove the Pitman arm.
4.Remove the horn button and cover. Attach an inch-pound torque
wrench and scoket to steering wheel nut, then turn the shaft to the
extreme right or left, gently, untill you hit the stop. rotate it
back from the stop 1/2 turn.
5.Turn the torque wrench throuh a 90 degree arc and check the torque
reading. Torque should be 5-8 inch lbs.If not proceed with steps 4
and 5. (I think they meantsteps 6 and 7???)
6.Loosen the adjuster locknut. tighten the worm bearing adjuster
until the torque wrench shows 5-8 inch lbs. within 1/2 turn of either
extreme.
7.Tighten the adjuster locknut to 50ft lbs. and recheck the reading
on the shaft.

PITMAN SHAFT OVERCENTER

1.With the pitman shaft removed, rotate the wormshaft from stop to
stop and count the number of turns.
2.Rotate the wormshaft back from the stop 1/2 the total number of
turns.
3.Install an inch-pound torque wrench and socket on the steering
wheel nut. Check the rotatingtorque as the shaft passes over the
center point of travel. Overcenter torque should be equal to the worm
bearing preload plus 4-10 inch pounds, but not more than 18 inch lbs.
If not proceed with steps 4-6.
4.Loosen the adjuster locknut.
5.Rotate the shaft over center abd tighten the adjuster as necessary.
6. Hold the adjuster screw and tighten the locknut to 25ft lbs. Do
not allow the adjuster screw to turn, or the adjustment will have to
be made over again!
7. Install the pitman arm, torque it to 185ft lbs and stake it in two
places.

That is all it says, hope that helps. I have not done it yet so if
there are any specs not given in the instructions let me know and I
will look for them.

I put a photo in the files section named steering box. It is a photo
of the diagram in the book.

Hello All,jason silva is leading a Tie Rod Wash trail run on Saturday, January 3, 2004.

When: 10 a.m.
Where: just north of I-10 on watson rd.
Rating: 4.0
Length: 3-4 hrs
CB Channel: 4

i was wanting to run tie rod wash and a couple other "unamed" washes.

tie rod wash is rated a 4, but has no bypasses or early exits. also has one small waterfall/notch that could be difficult for longer wheelbase vehicles.

also would like to explore some of the other washes in the area.

i recommend at least 33" tires for clearence but lockers aren't required.

so if your not too hung over, come on out and start the year off with some rocks.
This is an interesting little wash with several obstacles, getting progressively harder further up the wash.

The trail starts off the main wash near the Sand Hills and comes out on the trail up to Monster Hill.

Hi, I have a sprung over cj set up for YJ springs, but temporarely
using my old cj lift springs(4in) which make my jeep at a stupid
highth. My leaf pins are offset to front quiet a bit and I would
like to keep it that way.

So what I'm looking for is 0 lift YJ type springs with offset to
front pins to maintain or lengthen my wheel base. Can I find in a
shop? will I have to go custom? or local junkyard?

Thank you

Subject: Re: Drive shaft to long??

Just to add to what Linda said, I would advise against the coil
spring spacers. I had a 94 ZJ with a 3" Rancho lift and added 1 3/4"
spacers and RE adjustable control arms (the rancho control arms were
binding on the coil spring perches). If you are running with the rear
sway bar removed you may have problems keeping your rear coil springs
in place when the rear suspension is extended. I had to go to RE 4.5"
coils. Also with the added lift you will definately need a SYE with
the spacers. After I went above 3" I had wicked viberations until I
added the SYE.I have to say that after the mods were done and I got
33" tires on (with the use of a sledge hammer in the inner fender
wells), my ZJ was a whole lot of fun!! Good luck.

Hello All,Don Whitehead is leading a Terminator (Upper) trail run on Saturday, December 20, 2003.

When: 10:00 am
Where: The same air down spot
Rating: 4.0+
Length: 4+
CB Channel: 4

Meeting at 10 to do Terminator and then on to others as group determines.

Upper Terminator can best be described as:
Rocks, waterfalls, off-camber spots and more rocks! Big Rocks.

Whereas there are several by-passes, even the by-passes have taken it's toll on sheet medal and paint.

This trail definitely requires full hard lockers in front and rear, lots of clearance, aggressive tires 33" or larger and an experienced driver.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Your install looks good !
I started my CB install last night and I'm heading over to see Allen at
Bronco 1 for more parts right now .
Don't they make a 'mic extension cord' that plugs in-between the mic and the
CB to give you some extra length ? That would save the next person from
having to do all of the soldering and whatnot . Just a thought .
Thanks for the write up .
Purple .

I put some Rubicon take off parts up on the Classified section (in the
proper TJ section). Interesting to some might be the rocker gaurds, or
the Polk 4x6 dash speaker upgrade. Shocks in there too.

Walmart has them for like $7. We have a few and love them. Sharky

play. :)

Where in on the east side would be a good place to find nuts bolts
and washers? Home Depot, Lowes and Ace didn't have the stuff I
need. -Rob
