See if you can adjust the free play first and also check the condition of
all of the tie rod ends etc. , etc . See if you can fix what you've got
before you start throwing parts at it . Do you know how to tighten up the
steering box ?

The jeep I just bought has A LOT of play in the wheel. Does anyone
know where I can get a used manual steering box cheap? I do not have
much $$ at the moment but need to get it fixed. I also need a set of
seat covers. TIA!!

I have always wondered if they have good parts, thanks for the post.
Their prices are a bit higher than AutoZone, but not too much. Did
he have any parts the required a core, if so, how does that work?

Yellowstone and Grand Teton

Moderator's Note:

On Tuesday the National Park Service issued their
plan for winter recreation access to Yellowstone
and Grand Teton National Parks.

On Wednesday, a Washington DC judge overturned the Park Service rule.

There is a lot of hype floating around the news
releases. The below cuts through most of the
hype to still unresolved issues. Yellowstone is
not about snowmobiles, wildlife, or clean air.

Many of you reading this have never and will
never be on a snowmobile. Please remember that
the same engine technology for snowmobiles is
applies to personal water craft and extended to
dirt bikes and ATV's.

Issue Alert from Winningreen A121703

Activist judge ignores facts, outlaws snowmobiles
in Yellowstone and Grand Teton - becomes the
Grinch who stole Christmas from western towns

By Gretchen Randall

Date: December 17, 2003

Issue: Judge Emmett G. Sullivan overturned a
Park Service rule that would have allowed
snowmobiles in limited numbers into Yellowstone
and Grand Teton National Parks. The judge said
he ruled as he did because the Clinton
administration, in an earlier rule-making
process, found that snowmobiles "so adversely
impacted the wildlife and resources of the parks
that all snowmobile use must be halted."

In banning all snowmobiles from the parks in
2004, Sullivan ignored important facts. The new
rule would have permitted only 1140 snowmobiles
per day and they would have been restricted to
existing roads which handle over 1,500,000 motor
vehicles per day during summer months. He also
failed to recognize that air quality standards
have never gone unmet in these parks during the
winter and the new rule would have required all
snowmobiles in 2005 to use cleaner burning
engines.

He also failed to take into account the welfare
of the many communities surrounding the park that
rely on snowmobile traffic to provide jobs and
pay for schools.

Comment 1: As Richard Pombo, chairman of the
House Resources Committee said, "Federal judges
continue to abuse their authority by legislating
from the bench. This trend must change."

Comment 2: As Richard Pombo, chairman of the
House Resources Committee said, "If environmental
extremists continue to have their way, people
will be looking at Yellowstone through plate
glass window."

Comment 3: The extremists who want to ban
snowmobiles in parks will next try to ban motor
vehicles in parks as well. Their real motivation
is to keep people out of parks entirely.

Comment 4: Again, a federal judge has ruled that
animals are more important than human beings and
their livelihood. It's time the economic impact
of judicial and regulatory decisions be
considered.

Background: The reversal of the Bush
administration rule means the previous rule of
the Clinton administration will stand which
allows only 493 snowmobiles per day in
Yellowstone in 2003 and a complete ban of all
snowmobile usage in December 2004.

The Bush administration plan would have required
the use of new technology in engines to achieve a
90 percent reduction in hydrocarbons and a 70
percent reduction in CO2, 80 percent of the
snowmobile usage would have been with guides.

Hello All,Jim Sanford is leading a Martinez Cabin trail run on Sunday, December 21, 2003.

When: 8:30-9AM. Head out as soon everyone gets there.
Where: Gas station at Florence Jct.
Rating: 2.5+
Length: 4-5 hrs.
CB Channel: 4

A friend and I are going to Martinez Cabin and then out through Box Canyon. Easy, scenic trip that beats shopping this time of year. Bring a lunch and camera. Look for a brown CJ7 and red TJ at the gas station.

Martinez Cabin is a wonderful trail for the "new" 4-wheeler with his stock vehicle and family.

This trail will take you into Martinez Canyon which has to be one of the most beautiful canyons in the area, in league with Sedona red bluffs!!

You can have lunch under the Cottonwood trees at the old homestead and you may explore the old mill.

Stock vehicle, stock tires and novice drivers, this would be a wonderful trail for you!!
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Transmission mount is shot. The rubber no longer controls the location of the transmission making shifting difficulty. Climb under and see if you can easily push the transmission side to side. If so, there is your problem. Saw this on my '89 XJ.

Hi All, Hope someone can help with some advice. While driving the Jeep
yesterday, the stick became very difficult to shift, in about 5 minutes it
went from being perfect to barely being able to get it into any gear... I
was able to get it into 3rd and limp home... I let it sit for about 3-4
hours and then tried it again and it worked perfect! No problems, shifts
all thru the gears and reverse...

Anyone see this before?? Are the manual trannys controlled by the
electronics/computer?? I hope not... For the last couple weeks, since I
bought it, my 16 year old son has been the only one driving it, (learning
permit/learning to drive stick), and I have been with him.... He has not
been gentle on the clutch/shifter, the normal learning curve for kids
learning a clutch!!.. My thought was that he knocked something out of
adjustment....but then it started working perfectly again!!...Electrical or
mechanical ???

Any ideas, please respond/advise.... Thanks, Bob J

Jim,

I ran a trail with some friends this past Monday. I had my Panasonic
Toughbook mounted on the dash and running all day long.

The Toughbook was designed with outdoor use in mind. It has a high
contrast, active matrix, touch screen on it and does quite good. I use
to carry a Toshiba active matrix laptop in the TJ and it was just short
of impossible to see in the daytime.

More info on my mobile laptop install at

Hi all,
Has anyone had any experience with hooking their GPS to a laptop and
using the moving map feature of Oziexplorer. My question pertains to the
ability to see a laptop screen in different lighting conditions. I've
got an older laptop that I've considered building a mount for and using
in conjunction with my GPS. The screen is not an active matrix. I've
also seen some info on using a Ipaq or other handhelds. Any input would
be appreciated.

Thanks to all,

Jim

I was thinking about mounting a CB radio in my center console, does
anyone see any problems with this? Also what about the over head
consoles? Where do most people mount their CB's??? Thanks for any
help!!

Try Pat at Benchworks 480-946-3992(builds/rebuilds steering systems);
he's been doing the Jeep thing (1970's employee at 4Wheelers) for a
long long long time and showed me a bunch of new stuff;

just for clarification, My reference to Sharky intailed that when he
rolled his jeep, appearently although he had and incredible cage and
belts he was hit by his CB ... Airevac, coma, rehab etc.
If you put anything in your Jeep make sure it is secured very very
very well.
By the grace of God (and lots of great friends/support) he seems to
be doing rather well. Dont let it happen to you
