I just saw a post that said the 231 is a stronger Xfer case. The people at
New Venture Gear which makes both of these cases (231 and 242) told me that
the 242 was the stronger and more reliable case of the two when I asked them
about swapping the 242 in my YJ. As for the AWD feature, it is really nice on
rain slick roads, icy roads and snowy roads. Granted we probably never get ice
and snow here but we do get rain from time to time. All things considered,
I would still go with the 242.

According to the New Venture web page the 231 is stronger than the 242.
This is the configureation of the 231J and 242J. The 242HD is
stronger than the 231HD and the 242HDAMG is stronger all of them.
Check the numbers for your self at

Full size Jeeps (Wagoneer,Grand Wagoneer,J10,J20) after 1980 (prior
used TH400 to BW quadratrac or very rarely dana 20) used a 727 which
bolted to a couple of different New Process transfercases.
Because the bolt pattern on the 300 is the same as the new process,
the 300 will bolt directly to the factory adapter. Although it has
not been a problem for me,I have been told in some rare cases you may
have front drive shaft clearance problems easily fixed by
modification of tranny pan.

Just north of Broken Arrow(maybe 1 mile or less?) on Hwy 179 there is
a Circle K on the right. Used to have free air, might still. It is
the closest to the trail though. If you are over by Greasy Spoon and
Soldiers Pass head west on 89A and look for a Giant gas station(Giant
being the brand, not an adjective describing an enormous gas station)
on the right. They have free air. If all else fails, Sedona is
filled with service stations and there is nothing terribly wrong with
driving on deflated tires for SHORT distances, as long as you're
going city speeds.

I am not sure what bolt pattern your engine has, you didnt say the year.
All 6cyls and 8 cyl CJ's and YJ./TJ used the TF904/909/999 (CJs) and the 32RH
(YJ & TJ and the same tranny as the 900's with a different name from what I can
tell. The difference in them is lock up or non lock up torque converter.
They are all the same strength are all referred to as medium strength. All
of the above Trannys will fit AMC V-8;s the 258 6cyl and the 4.0 6 cyl. 4
Cyl Wranglers use the light duty 30RH. If the bolt pattern is the same on the
bellhousings the automatics will fit but then you have another problem....the
NP231 transfer case is different in the 4 cyl models, it has a 21 spline
input and the automatics for the 6 cyls use a 23 spline input. You have a choice
of swapping the shaft with a 23 spline shaft or just putting in a transfer
case from a 6 cyl Wrangler that already has it. Perhaps now would be the time
to consider an engine swap to an AMC 304 or 360. It is a simple swap and
will bolt up to the auto trannys. If you want heavy duty you can get a TF727
tranny out of a 1980-1986 J series truck, Cherokee or Grand Wagoneer. That
will bolt up to the AMC V-8 and will work with the 6 cyl NP231 transfer
case...........Ah decisions decisions.......Just Empty Every Pocket :-)

I'm not too familiar with YJs, but it looks right to me. What you actually
have are 3 pieces that do different things. One is the "bikini top" which
goes over your head - that looks correctly installed. One is called a
"windjammer" (I think) and that's the piece behind the seats that blocks
the wind from coming in from the back. That, too, looks okay. The third is
called a "tonneau cover" and that's the piece that covers the back of the
Jeep. Looks good there, too.
They're not designed to fit exactly together, nor are they designed to be
water-tight like a complete top is. I dunno if anybody *makes* a half-top
for Jeeps.
Dave (only has a bikini top - no doors or windjammer or tonneau cover)

about swapping the 242 in my YJ.
