I think, most of the FSJ's have D20's, in which case they won't have
a true tail shaft, it is more like a shaft with a gear on it.

Chris,

I've been happy with my steering from Troy. I even got around to
centering the steering wheel the other day. :) For the price you
mentioned, the Currie can be had. Troy's runs more than that....you
would have to talk with him to get current pricing. You are correct in
that the ZJ tie rod still leaves the drag link stock which will most
likely be a problem at some point down the road, given big tires and
rocks.

With Troy's or Currie, you won't be upgrading an upgrade down the road.

I was thinking of less than approx $450.00, but I don't even know what
that would rule in or out. I know of the WJ Upgrade, the currie setup
and I've seen a picture from I believe your website of the Toys by Troy,
The Wj seems the cheapest but I'm worried the draglink wouldn't last
long term.

I'm just hoping that I can find a cure-all so I don't have to upgrade
from the upgrade from the original... if that makes any sense :)

How are you getting along with the Toys by troy? Does it steer like
factory?

I'm interested in some input on a stronger than stock steering setup
for the Jeep Tj. I'm running 33" and will very likely be going to
35" within another year or so. The current tierod was recently bent
on my last trail run so now seems like a good time for an upgrade.

I was curious if some of the steering setups where the factory y
link is removed caused any dead zones or if there were any
shortcomings of altering the factory setup.

thanks in advance for any help on this.

Chris

Quite a number of people I know use the Currie setup and like it a lot.
It is much stronger than stock.

Subject: [TR] Technical Workshop - Saturday, May 22, 2004

Hello All,Joe West is leading a Technical Workshop trail run on Saturday, May 22, 2004.

When: Saturday, May 22nd 2004
Where: 649 South 30th Circle
Mesa, Arizona 85204
Rating: 2.0-
Length:
CB Channel:

This is the Fifth semi-annual Kill Switch workshop.

We will be installing stand-alone kill switches on all vehicles.

The cost for the workshop will be $20 per person and will include everything you need to install a kill switch.

The workshop can hold approximately 30 vehicles.

More details will follow as the time for the workshop gets closer.

I will continue to schedule kill switch technical workshops every few months until everyone who wants to have an anti-theft kill switch installed has one. I will then schedule them once a year or so. I still have people contacting me who want to install a kill switch so I have scheduled this fifth workshop for Saturday, May 22nd at 9:00am.

This is kill switch technical workshop number 5. The purpose of this workshop is threefold:

1. To keep your rig from being a theft statistic.
2. To show you how easy it is to install a kill switch.
3. To spend some fun time just hanging out with Jeepers.

I have picked a date for the fifth kill-switch workshop a few months out to enable people to sign up over a longer period of time. I will update the information in this run as necessary, but for the most part all of the information you will need is here. The limit for the number of rigs we can fit in my yard and cul-de-sac is 30 so this will be the maximum number of people who can sign up. Please note that YOU will be doing the work in this workshop and I will be guiding, assisting, teaching, and testing your installs (and fixing any problems which may occur).

The price for the kill switch alone is $20, and includes everything you will need to install the switch.

Please note: I am NOT making any money on the kill switches... the charge just covers the cost of the hardware with a couple of dollars extra thrown in to cover supplies. I do this workshop for fun and to help people out... not to make money. The tools that I purchase especially for the workshop (such as the propane soldering irons) are raffled off at the end of the workship.

Unfortunately, because of problems I had with purchasing killswitches for people who didn't show and didn't pay (leaving me stuck with the hardware), it will be necessary for people to pay in advance. To pay for your kill switch, sign up for this run and then send a check for the appropriate amount to my home address shown below. In the memo area on your check, please put kill switch. No matter how early you send out your payment, I will not cash the check until I actually purchase the kill switch.

The kill switch type will be determined by the year, make, and model of the Jeep being fitted with the switch. I encourage those with electrical fuel pumps to install the kill switch on fuel relay. Those with older vehicles and mechanical fuel pumps are left killing the starter relay. Once I determine how many people sign up and what kind of vehicles they have, I will put together a list of required materials and purchase them for everyone. Individual members can choose what kind of kill switch they want or I will determine it for them based on vehicle type if they have no preference. I will provide all tools and will purchase bulk materials (wires, switches, solder, connectors, electrical tape, zip ties, etc) which everyone will split the cost of. If you are interested, please sign up.

VERY IMPORTANT:
All Participants in the clinic MUST give me the following information:

1. Year and model of vehicle on which we will be installing the kill switch
2. Do you have a FACTORY service manual OR a service manual with wiring schematics for your vehicle?
3. Which of the following tools can you bring: drill, drill bits, wire cutters, metric and/or standard socket set, wire strippers, wire crimpers, nylon ties, electrical tape, soldering iron/solder, long extension cords, multi-outlet adaptors/short extension cords, volt-ohm meters or DVM, blowdryer (for heat-shrink tubing).

VERY VERY IMPORTANT:

My home address is:

649 S. 30th Circle, Mesa, Arizona 85204.
My home phone is:
(480) 325-9419

My cell phone is:
(602) 616-0785

You can obtain very good directions from Yahoo maps... but a brief set of directions are as follows:

Take 60 headed East and get off on Gilbert Road.
Head North on Gilbert Road (Left) to Broadway Road.
Head East on Broadway (right) to 30th street (30th street is the FIRST residential street you can make a right on just past the light at Lindsay... do not turn into the small community just east of Walgreens.
Head South (right) on 30th Street.
30th Street dead ends in my Cul-De-Sac and my home is the one with all the palm trees in the yard.

PLEASE PLEASE park along 30th street and WALK to my home. The reason that I am asking this is because I want to group like vehicles together to simplify installations. After everyone parks along 30th street, I will have a short meeting on my front porch and then I will ask all YJ owners to go get their vehicles and we will place them in one location in my yard. I will then ask all TJ owners to go get their vehicles and will park them in another location... and so on until all vehicle types are grouped together in my yard or cul-de-sac.

After everyone is grouped together, I will walk everyone through the steps of installing kill switches... and we will work together as a team to get them installed. To avoid having any electrical problems, you will be required to disconnect the positive lead on your battery BEFORE we do any work on your vehicle.

Please plan on bringing a cooler with drinks, cups and/or snacks if you will need them.

I will post this entire post to the "trip" on Azvjc.org if people need to reference it at a later date.

If you have suggestions and you see something I have forgotten, please let me know.

And last but not least, if you would like to come hang out and HELP or just watch and learn... I'm sure we could use all the help we can get. Everyone interested is welcome to show up.

If you have any questions, please contact me via email at:

joe.west@d...

Kind Regards,

Joe West

I will second the recommendation for Bronco One. With one caveat, I believe
they sell Garmin Products exclusively. This happens to be my brand of
choice, but there are others out there. Alan will load any garmin map
product on your new unit, and will keep updating it if you bring it back to
him. But you will eventually want your own software library. There are also
lots of web sites with a wealth of information on GPS.

All GPSR's (GPS receivers, eg, handhelds) perform the same basic
function - triangulation. They lock onto GPS satellite signals. Two
or more satellite signals + your receiver = triangulation which
allows your receiver to compute and display your location. The more
satellite signals the better the accuracy.

Beyond that, it's all form. If basic triangulation is all you need,
any inexpensive model will be fine. Add more options and the price
goes up. Decide what you want to use it for and which options you'd
like versus those you don't need. Determine which brands and models
have those options and compare, then make an educated consumer
choice.

If you plan on storing lots of data you'll want one with more memory
(keep in mind it's easy to download stored data to your PC, then
clear the memory. You can always upload the data files back onto
your GPSR when needed). Some have better antennas or longer battery
life (not as important if it's always going to be used in a vehicle
with an accessroy adapter but more important if you plan on using it
while hiking). Some have built in electronic compasses (no
replacement for a real compasses and knowing how to use one, imo).

http://gpsinformation.net (formerly joemehaffey.com) is the first
place I'd go to learn about GPS in general. Visit
http:..www,garmin.com and http://www.magellangps.com (the two most
popular brands) and research them a bit. There are other sites which
allow you to compare various models side by side.

Richard,

If the one you saw at cosco is the Magellan that is a pretty good deal. I
have the Meridain model and it is great. The gold has more built in memory
then the one I have. The cosco package has has extra memory for uploading
topo maps and with the recent upgrade of the firmware you can save tracks,
waypoints and routes seperatly on the removable memory.

Anyway I think the answer you are looking for is how easy are these things
to learn and use. This is a question of how quickly you can learn. From all
the ones I have seen they are menu driven with an array of buttons that get
you to the functions. Some more some less.

Aspects to be looking for are screen size, resolution and color.

Garmin and Magellan are the most prevelent models out there and most people
are partial to the make they own.

I will probably be selling my later next year. I own a Dell Axim PDA that
uses compact flash memory. The cool thing about this is that they make a
compact flash GPS that installs into my PDA. This makes my GPS have a color
display and touch screen. Just another option to think about.

My name is Garrett Ross and I have recently aquired a 1955 M38A1
military jeep. I purchaced the jeep to rebiuld but due to
cercumstances beyond my control I dont have the time for this. The
jeep runs awesome due to a recent full engine rebuild and profetional
carb. rebuild. (SHE PURRS LIKE A KITTEN). T front end was rebuilt
about a year ago. I have posted a pic in the picture folder. If you
interested in details feel free to call me at 480-539-7925. I would
like to trade it for running cj-7 or 4000.00. Its a great jeep in
great running condition, I would be doing it an injustice not doing a
restore on it. Please feel free to call anytime for details.

Why can I STILL not purchase a Chrysler DRB III so that I can do my own

I want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers. My son and I are
both home from the hospital and doing well. The kids tougher than nails for
a 5 year old (all the attention from the nurses probably helped him out a
little...he had them wrapped around his finger :P). He got banged around a
bit and will be sore, but no major damage thank god. I credit PigPen (Jason
Swaggert) Fabrication and Dave King for saving our lives...even though the
Exo Cage wasnt completely done, we would have been gonners for sure without
it. We rolled at least 4 times at 50mph. The cage held up and protected my
son and I. I cant begin to think of what we and the jeep would have looked
like without it. I have always said that my timing in life has always been
"off", but timing on the cage was just right. The cage was put on literally
2 days before the accident. Someone was looking out for us. I cracked a
vertabrae in my back and have a peice of bone floating around that will
probably bother me somewhat for the rest of my life, but I am happy to be
around to talk about it. My neck is swollen up real good so they have me in
a neck brace for a couple of weeks until the swelling can go down enough to
head back to the hospital for some more tests to make sure there isnt any
tendon or nerve damage. We will both be fine.

I want to thank everyone who called and left messages, emailed us, posted
thoughts and prayers on the boards, offered to help, and came to the
hospital to see us. I especially want to thank Frog (Brandon Reid) for
rushing out to the accident scene and taking care of my jeep, making very
important calls to special people in my life that were worried about us and
couldnt be there, and everything else you did. All you guys and gals are
great and I am proud to call you my friends. Thank You.

BTW, the nurses got a kick out of the glove balloons that said stuff like
"its a jeep thing, I dont understand" and "Exo roll cages for sale call pig
pen fabrication. Frank tested and approved" . And I admit I got a little
scared when one of the nurses called to double check on the white board
instructions that said full rectal exam (Flexy I am gonna get you back for
that one :->)

As for the BadAzXJ, The jeeps a total loss. But thats irrelevant. The
important thing is that we are ok and my son can still make it to school for
his christmas party this week :)

Thank you and I hope you have a happy and safe holiday season....

oh yeah....wear your seatbelts! :P

Hi All, Hope someone can help with some advice. While driving the Jeep
yesterday, the stick became very difficult to shift, in about 5 minutes it
went from being perfect to barely being able to get it into any gear... I
was able to get it into 3rd and limp home... I let it sit for about 3-4
hours and then tried it again and it worked perfect! No problems, shifts
all thru the gears and reverse...

Anyone see this before?? Are the manual trannys controlled by the
electronics/computer?? I hope not... For the last couple weeks, since I
bought it, my 16 year old son has been the only one driving it, (learning
permit/learning to drive stick), and I have been with him.... He has not
been gentle on the clutch/shifter, the normal learning curve for kids
learning a clutch!!.. My thought was that he knocked something out of
adjustment....but then it started working perfectly again!!...Electrical or
mechanical ???

Any ideas, please respond/advise.... Thanks, Bob J

Date: Thu Dec 18, 2003 6:45am
Subject: Re: [Tech] 1991 xj - question on swaping a transfer case

In phoenix or with a front automatic locker the full time mode is of
questionable value. In snow country the full time mode is great.

The difference between Full and part time is differentiation in the
transfer case. In part time mode, which is available on the 242 and is
the only mode on the 231, the front and rear drive shafts are locked
together. When you make turns the front and rear axles travel through
differnt arcs with result in different distance traveled. This
difference in distance causes binding to happen so something needs to
allow the forces to release. On slick stuff there is enough slippage in
the wheels to unload the binding; however, on higher traction surface
this binding and release shows up as bucking in the steering wheel and
in severe cases can cause parts breakage. Putting lockers in the axles
makes the effect even worse.

Full time 4wd puts a differentail in the transfer case. This allows the
drive shafts to rotate at slightly different speeds so that you don't
get the binding the part time case has. The downs side of the diff that
the 242 uses is it is a open differential so it doesn't work real well
when there is major differences between the traction on each axle;
however, in that case it can be switched to part time and full lockup.

So what is the advantage to having full time mode? In Phoenix when it is
dry it really doesn't provide any advantage and in fact a lot of 242
owners just use 2wd in this case. When it rains using the full time
mode allows you to have the additional control of all wheel drive. Same
goes when you go to snow country where you are seeing patchy ice.

The full time mode is not real compatable with having a front auto
locker like a detroit. The front lockers really drive the car under
power so if you want to have the most use of the full time mode it is
better to stick with manual lockers like the Ox or ARB. The TrueTrac
LSD also works extremely well in the front with the 242.

The 297X upgrade is heavier u-joints. Non-ABS prior to around 97 used a
260X u-joint which is not as strong as the 297X joint. The 297X joint
is the same joint used in D44 front axles. The conversion is just
getting a complete set of axle shafts from a ABS XJ or 97 and newer XJ
or TJ and swapping the axles into your axle. The only issue you would
have with the swap is if you have the vacum disconnect axle. In that
case you need to pop the carrier out and install a new seal on the
passenger side. Sounds harder than it really is. These 297 axles use a
one piece axle on the passenger side so you elimnate the vacum motor
with the upgrade.

Hope this helps.
