why are the directions to the trails no longer posted? I know they
used to be there but now I cant go riding because i have no clue
where any of the freaking trails are. This will definatly increase
the amount of illegal wheeling because people will think they are on
the right trail but really aren't

I never remember the directions ever being posted. In fact, attempting
to provide directions to most of the trails is almost impossible. For
instance, to get to Upper Woodpecker in the Florence Junction area, you
travel approximately 30 minutes on old mining trails just to get to the
UW trail head. Providing someone with every turn and fork that is
required to get there would be quite a challenge to say the least.
Likewise, the written directions needed to find Judgment Day or Upper
Terminator (both in the Table Mesa area) would be equally difficult. If
I were to tell you how to get to the beginning of Tin Can Alley, it
would be of little help since the trail is buried amidst a plethora of
trails in that area. I still rely on a GPS every time I run it, even
though I've been going there for more than 4 years. :)

As for "illegal" wheeling, the easiest method by which to avoid that is
to simply stay on the trail, obey any posted signs or notices, and
practice TreadLightly. If you do those, the chances of you wheeling
illegally are virtually eliminated.

Of course, as is always said, your mileage may very.

Any "Existing Road or Trail" is open to OHV use unless "Posted
Closed"....................... Cross Country across open or virgin land
is illegal......... not trail riding.

Respect and common sense can rule most of what we do.........

BLM, ASLD and FS are all working diligently to develop a
"recreation/transportation plan" for their respective lands but it takes
time. There are several recreation areas "access" maps available for
several riding areas in the state and several more are being worked on
now. Florence Junction and Table Mesa route inventory maps are now
complete and they are both working on the "designation" of the trails
actually recorded on the ground. You can find excellent maps from the
Public Lands Information Center (PLIC) located at 222 N. Central.
(Inside the BLM lobby in the southeast corner of the building at the
southwest corner of Central and Van Buren) If you park in the ACE
parking structure off Van Buren between Central and 1st AVENUE they will
validate your parking. This office is funded by all the land agencies
and can print you a map of any area of the state. Maps show land
status, routes, designated riding areas, single track vs two track
trails, etc.

Some maps are free or simple fees to cover their costs.............
large topo type maps with all land status, routes etc run around $8.00.

Why can I STILL not purchase a Chrysler DRB III so that I can do my own

Subject: Re: directions to the trails

Being new to AZ and this group, I don't know if formerly posted
traihead locations/directions were removed or not, but I have seen
that the club website no longer posts directions to some of the
tougher trails and I completely understand and agree with the reasons
for not doing so.

If directions for all trails were removed, I imagine Mike has a good
reason for doing so, or maybe it's just a problem with the site that
needs looking into.

As Stu mentioned, I use my GPS to mark waypoints for trails I've been
to and I load them into a personal database so I know how to get back
to them when necessary. Granted, my AZ trail DB doesn't contain many
trails yet (if anyone has a list of waypoints they can send me, let
me know).

Short of doing the same, I'd suggest you either sign up for posted
runs, or post a run to a trail you want to run and ask someone who
knows directions to lead the trip. Then be sure and record directions
or take waypoints (if you have a GPS) so you'll know how to get back
in the future.

One issue I have with posted runs is folks tend to say "meet at the
air down spot" or "meet at the gravel parking area". That's nice if
you've been there before, but doesn't help much if you haven't. Maybe
folks can be more specific with meeting locations/directions on a per
run basis.

so he is able to move around a bit and wont require surgery. They

Hello All,

Great day of wheeling! Weather was just right. Just 2 jeeps. My little TJ and Scott's stocker. Ran into Andrew and Brian(think I got the names right, Sorry if not) in a red YJ on 36" swampers(Nice rig). Had fun on all that hilly stuff at the end of 532. I brought my friend from OK with me. He's bringing his Jeep for sure out here now. Not sure what happened to Scott E... Hello? Scott? I hope everything is okay. We waited until 1:45. Sorry we missed you brother. Call me I'll go again. Also I think Scott has some "slightly" used tj bumper caps for sale - LOL!!

NP231, which has 2WD plus PT 4WD hi and PT 4WD lo.

NP 242. has all that the 231 offers, plus FT 4WD.

I have had XJs with both Xfer cases and I can tell you I prefer the 242
especially in bad weather when you can run in FT 4WD without getting that binding
that you get when you run the 231 on pavement.

I spoke with a person from New Process Gear two years ago at a convention
about the two xfer cases and he told me that the 242 was the stronger case of the
two. I have also heard that a version of the 242 is on H-1 Hummers.

I believe that you can put an SYE on the 242 also.

Hope this helps

If I recall right weren't the harder trail directions removed to help
aviod rock stacking/paving of the harder trails? As for the easier
trails I thought that was up to the members to post directions as
they used the trails. I suggest buying a book at 4-wheelers, Off road
unlimited or Desert rat (in that order).

I'm interested in some input on a stronger than stock steering setup

According to <http://www.newventuregear.com/tcases.html> the 231 is
stonger. Within the same year types they swap directly you just need
to watch that both cases have the same input shaft (21 or 23 spline).
The older XJ's with vacum disconnect axles add some comlication as
the vacum switch is in the 231 case so you will need to either lock
the axle engaged, wire up a manual switching or replace the axle shaft
with a 1 piece unit. The last option is best as you can do a 297X
upgrade at the time.

Also the 242 does hang about 1" lower than the 231 but both easily fit
above the skid plates that most people use.

I was thinking of less than approx $450.00, but I don't even know what
that would rule in or out. I know of the WJ Upgrade, the currie setup
and I've seen a picture from I believe your website of the Toys by Troy,
The Wj seems the cheapest but I'm worried the draglink wouldn't last
long term.

I'm just hoping that I can find a cure-all so I don't have to upgrade
from the upgrade from the original... if that makes any sense :)

How are you getting along with the Toys by troy? Does it steer like
