since IM not set up for crawling yet, up grades to come next year!!! I still
find much enjoyment in throwing some mud around. But never really gave any

Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Sunday, December 14, 2003
Hello All,Brad Rogers is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Sunday, December 14, 2003.<br><br>When: Sunday Morning 9:00am
Where: Corral off of H79
Rating: 4.0+
Length: All Day
CB Channel: 5
Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.
Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.
The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.
A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.
As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a <b>drop</b> into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.
The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"
This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!
NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

Scott, Point of information.................. BLM (Bureau of Land
Management) is PUBLIC land and does not require a permit for anything
other than "planned, organized events". State Trust Lands are not
public. (private for all intents and purposes due to the fact they
belong to a "Trust" owing to 13 School Trusts in the state.) EVERYONE
accessing State Trust Lands needs a permit................. walking
your dog, hiking, ballooning, OHV, etc............ There is a huge
debate regarding this and we are actively fighting it but for the time
being we need a permit for access to 9.5 million acres of State Trust
Lands. This is probably what you have but ASLD is not associated with
BLM.
I know "mudding" is a big sport in the Midwest and east ..... probably
because there's not many "rocks" but right now it is not considered to
be "Treading Lightly" in the west or southwest.
Wish I knew of you a couple of weeks ago............. my 4-runner was
caked with mud from doing numbering in the Desert Wells area following
the rain............. it cost me extra to get the truck washed because
of it. Next time I'll call on you. Actually I'll recruit you to help
with the Desert Wells area to finish the signing and placing the last of
the posts next time it rains!! That will take care of your "fix" for
mudding! Tehehe

What year is your CJ? My intermediate shaft (column to steering box)
only has a u-joint on each end. The u-joints is where the slop
is/was. The rest is all steel tubing (outer and inner sleeves). If
the bearing is where the slop is you might get away with only
replacing it. Do you have any pictures of the shaft and or the
bearing area?
The replacement Borgeson HD shaft is pricey, but everyone I've
talked to or read about whose swapped one in agrees the difference
is like night and day. The needle bearing u-joints used in the
Borgeson shaft are leaps and bounds better than what they used in
the OEM shafts in the 70's which also weren't designed to handle
oversize tires and the pounding we put them through on the trails.

to need an intake as well. Unless you can find one used, there a little

I've seen them on eBay reasonably priced from time to time.
While were talking about 258 modz. Does anybody know if there are any
decent RV cams for the 258? And who makes one.
I'm going to need to rebuild my 258 soon, headers/intake/cam, possibly
slapping a 4.0 head on. I'm told putting a 4.0 head on a 258 is an
instant 50HP. Since an RV cam is generally more duration on the lobe, I
should still be able to use the 4.0 head? I understand some slight
machining needs to be done to the 4.0 head to work on the 258 block.
Is anybody running the 4.0 head on a 258? Where is the extra 50hp
coming from? I'm assuming compression? Probably will require high grade
fuel as well.
More feedback please..

spacers dont look as if they would hold the intake very well. Does

I run the Headman headers but I also have the offenhouser intake.
Erson makes great cams for the 258 I6. I rebuilt mine some years ago, did allot of machining work on the head and block and I am running over 250hp now. I make max torque at only 1800rpm and throttle response is awesome.

Here's a writeup on the 4.0 head upgrade.

I suppose the added HP is a result of the more efficient airflow as
a result of the way the ports are machined. I'd like to do this
upgrade myself someday - maybe when my current head needs replaced.

What would Jesus drive?
One theory is that Jesus would tool around in an old Plymouth because
"the Bible says God drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden in a
Fury." But in Psalm 83, the Almighty clearly owns a Pontiac and a Geo.
The passage urges the Lord to "pursue your enemies with your Tempest
and terrify them with your Storm." Perhaps God favors Dodge pickup
trucks, because Moses' followers are warned not to go up a mountain
"until the Ram's horn sounds a long blast." Some scholars insist that
Jesus drove a Honda but didn't like to talk about it. As proof, they
cite a verse in St. John's gospel where Christ tells the crowd, "For I
did not speak of my own Accord." Meanwhile, Moses rode an old British
motorcycle, as evidenced by a Bible passage declaring, "the roar of
Moses' Triumph is heard in the hills." Joshua drove a Triumph sports
car with a hole in its muffler: "Joshua's Triumph was heard throughout
the land." And, following the Master's lead, the Apostles car-pooled in
a Honda: "The Apostles were in one Accord."
I personally think there has been some discrepancies with the
translation through the years! We all know Moses had to have had Jeep!
How else could he have made it up Mt. Sinai.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Unspecified - Saturday, December 13, 2003
Hello All,
Kent Harman lead a trail run Saturday, December 13, 2003 across Unspecified
I think I can speak for everyone by saying that it was a great trip. Those in attendance were: Kent and Johanna (XJ), Tim and Kate (TJ), Carl, Claire, Matt, and Eve (TJ), and Tim (sweet F250 w/ pop-up in-bed camper). We hit the dirt at 9:30AM on Saturday, and after letting some air out of the tires, we were on our way. <br>
<br>
The road was in excellent condition compared to the past and the Border Patrol has added metal grates to random spots in the road to reduce erosion. We stopped at Papago Well for lunch and spoke with a ranger. He explained that only 20 or so of the desert pronghorns survived last summer and that some were being imported from Mexico in an effort to diversify the gene pool. In addition to the ranger, we saw 2 parties of sheep hunters.<br>
<br>
We set up camp at Tule Well at one of the last picnic tables. The other site was occupied by some hunters and their Super-camp. They'd been out there for 11 days and looked well encamped. We had dinner, followed by some excellent pineapple upside-down cake (courtesy of Tim and Kate). Although the night was chilly, our fake log fire kept us warm enough to enjoy the night sky. We were blessed with a late rising moon and the peak of the Geminids meteor shower.<br>
<br>
The next day we heading towards the Tinajas Altas. Someone reportedly spotted Ivan Stewart racing down the drag road in a pickup with a camper, but the report was unconfirmed. We arrived at the High Tanks only to find that every snowbird from Yuma decided to join us. There were seriously 60 people or more and this was sort of a let down. Carl, Tim, and I made the climb up to the 5th tank to escape the day trippers. From high up, the crowd seemed less oppressive and we did our best to act like obnoxious 10 year olds (Mommmmm! Look! Look! Look! Mommmmmm!). We then made our way back to I-8 and stopped for a bite in Tacna. <br>
<br>
I had a great time and especially enjoyed the company. The road was in good shape and the desert was still green from the fall rains. The number of people that we encountered in the desert was higher than I've experienced, but that didn't detract from the good time. I am looking forward to going on a similar trip very soon.<br>

I seriously doubt that changing the head ALONE will add a full 50 hp.
If you look a the heads from a 4.2 and a 4.0 side by side, you'll see
that there are obvious and significant improvements in airflow with the
4.0 head. But you need to make other mods in order to do something with
that air.
A friend and I rebuilt my 4.2 (258) about 2yrs ago. I didn't order the
parts, so I can't recall who made it, but we went with an RV cam, bored
the cylinders .030" over, added an Offy intake and installed a modified
Holley 390 4bbl I got from Randy Siade. I'm also running the Ford TFI
ignition.
I left the stock exhaust manifold, though, but am running a custom
exhaust (for clearance, not size) through a Flowmaster muffler.
It's not a high horse engine...maybe gained 20 - 30 HP over the stock
4.2 rating which was about 120, I believe. But it makes sweet torque,
runs at virtually any angle and revs smoothly to 4500rpm (although I
usually cruise at no more than 2800 - 3000, about 70mph with 35's,
4.10's and the 3spd auto).
I imagine I could gain some decent performance with a header, and even
more with the 4.0 head swap. These would be nice, but are far off
future possibilities. I won't be blasting up big sand dunes with my
set-up, but it does work very nice on the trail.
Rebuilds do not come cheap...in fact it may not be a stupid idea to
consider a complete swap to a 4.0 engine.
just a few points, comments and things to consider...

Subject: Mean Green starters?
I need to replace my starter. I don't think I want to exercise
the "lifetime warranty" each year with an AutoZone/Checker type
starter. So I'm thinking about the Mean Green starter. Does anyone
have experience with them and can you convince me they're worth their
high cost? If not, I may give Napa a shot.
Thanks,
Roger

I think you are right about the modest HP just by switching the
heads.......after all the 4.0 HO has in addition to the improved head fuel injection and
improved ignition components.........I have also heard that the 4.0 head doesnt
quite mate up perfectly to the 258 but I have not tried that swap in the past
so I cant swear to it.

I can't comment on the Mean Green product as I've never used one.
I am a bit surprised that you'd use Autozone and/or Checker over
NAPA, though, unless there is something I don't know about AZ NAPA
dealers.
If you replace your OEM parts with AC Delco or Bendix parts, as the
case may be, you'll get quality stuff. I don't know what Autozone and
Checker use, but your parts shouldn't need to be replaced annually.
I think my NAPA rebuilt starter has been on my CJ for almost 10 years
now and still working great.

Hello All,
Don Whitehead lead a trail run Saturday, November 15, 2003 across Raw Deal (Lower)
Three of us showed up on this short notice trip. Scott was in his XJ, Burt in a Rubi and me in an YJ. This group size was nice and we decided to skip the crowds on Terminator and hit Raw Deal first. This was a nice trip and Scott XJ received a small reward on his XJ. Afterwards, we went on to Terminator but it was still crowded so we turned around and headed back out. Scott and Burt went on playing on the nearby hills and I went home for the day. Nice trip!!!

My Autozone starter is 4 years old and still going strong. I bought my last
part at Napa after I got a new carb from them for my 258 CJ which had a 90 day
warranty and was nearly $200. It went bad after 5 months and they refused
to listen.......I wont buy another part at NAPA unless I cant get it at
AutoZone........Think about it this way, there are only a couple of rebuilders for
this stuff that everyone sells either under their name of the rebuilders name.
Your rebuilt starter at Napa is more than likely the same one you would buy
at AutoZone in a different box. You will pay more at NAPA probably and what
is their warranty ? At in any case if you had to replace the starter every
year for free, it only takes about 15-20 min. Save your money get the Auto
Zone one, I think that Mean Green is overpriced but I dont know anyone that has
used them....probably due to the price.

I was also looking into a header for my 258, until I realized I'm going
to need an intake as well. Unless you can find one used, there a little
pricy.
I've seen them on eBay reasonably priced from time to time.
While were talking about 258 modz. Does anybody know if there are any
decent RV cams for the 258? And who makes one.
I'm going to need to rebuild my 258 soon, headers/intake/cam, possibly
slapping a 4.0 head on. I'm told putting a 4.0 head on a 258 is an
instant 50HP. Since an RV cam is generally more duration on the lobe, I
should still be able to use the 4.0 head? I understand some slight
machining needs to be done to the 4.0 head to work on the 258 block.
Is anybody running the 4.0 head on a 258? Where is the extra 50hp
coming from? I'm assuming compression? Probably will require high grade
fuel as well.
More feedback please..

Erson makes great cams for the 258 I6. I rebuilt mine some years ago, did allot of machining work on the head and block and I am running over 250hp now. I make max torque at only 1800rpm and throttle response is awesome.

Here's a writeup on the 4.0 head upgrade.
http://monsterslayer.com/jeep/40Head/40Head.htm

<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
I had a great time and especially enjoyed the company. The road was in good shape and the desert was still green from the fall rains. The number of people that we encountered in the desert was higher than I've experienced, but that didn't detract from the good time. I am looking forward to going on a similar trip very soon.<br>

When I rebuilt my 258 no one had tried to put a 4.0L head on a 258. I went the route of machining the 358 head for better flow. It probably cost me more to do that then it would have to put a 4.0L head on.

Here's a writeup on the 4.0 head upgrade.
http://monsterslayer.com/jeep/40Head/40Head.htm
I suppose the added HP is a result of the more efficient airflow as
a result of the way the ports are machined. I'd like to do this
upgrade myself someday - maybe when my current head needs replaced.

If I'm not mistaken, please somebody correct me if I am wrong..
I think you also have to go with an after market intake. You're
obviously talking about a 258 I6.
I was also looking into a header for my 258, until I realized I'm
going
to need an intake as well. Unless you can find one used, there a
little
pricy.
Since an RV cam is generally more duration on the lobe,
I
should still be able to use the 4.0 head? I understand some slight
machining needs to be done to the 4.0 head to work on the 258 block.
Is anybody running the 4.0 head on a 258? Where is the extra 50hp
coming from? I'm assuming compression? Probably will require high
grade
fuel as well.
More feedback please..

Thanks,

Another thought about Napa: They offer a 10% discount for AAA members. I
didn't know this until recently.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Raw Deal (Lower) - Saturday, November 15, 2003
Hello All,
Don Whitehead lead a trail run Saturday, November 15, 2003 across Raw Deal (Lower)
