Let's hope this sends a clear message to the remaining insurgents
that their efforts are in vain and they will lay down their weapons
and surrender (or at least stop killing) so our soldiers can get
home sooner.

What year is your CJ? My intermediate shaft (column to steering box)
only has a u-joint on each end. The u-joints is where the slop
is/was. The rest is all steel tubing (outer and inner sleeves). If
the bearing is where the slop is you might get away with only
replacing it. Do you have any pictures of the shaft and or the
bearing area?

The replacement Borgeson HD shaft is pricey, but everyone I've
talked to or read about whose swapped one in agrees the difference
is like night and day. The needle bearing u-joints used in the
Borgeson shaft are leaps and bounds better than what they used in
the OEM shafts in the 70's which also weren't designed to handle
oversize tires and the pounding we put them through on the trails.

Subject: RE: table mesa maps

There were additions needed................... identification #'s for
Tonto Forest lands for one........so the Phoenix BLM office is printing
them this next week. Should have a supply available by the end of the
week. We'll get them distributed to areas around the valley to be
picked up for review.

Please remember these are NOT TOPO MAPS FOR OUR RECREATION USE. They
are simply maps depicting the "trails (two track, single track and some
non-motorized) that are on the ground today. What we actually "get"
will depend on how many of our people step up and identify trails that
are not reflected on these maps. Bottom line is ............. if they
don't show on these maps and we don't step up and insure they are on the
maps .............. we won't have them.

As the "rule of thumb" goes today, the only trails that would be
"closed" would be trails that are through a cultural site (these should
be rerouted) or those that have serious riparian or resource issues.
................. but.................. Tucson BLM will TRY and make
each issue a critical one so we must ALL be involved to fight this. The
other field offices do not agree with Tucson so if we can keep the
pressure on (more than a 1/2 dozen of us) Tucson we will win this
battle. They say "experience makes the next battle easier" so we should
all be pros soon!!!

When I get the maps I'll post the locations.................. Sandee

Thanks to all who responded. Turns out Mike's sawzall method was the
best option. Once cut both ends slipped right off (well the bottom
actually needed a bit of persuasion). Big thanks to Mike Wixom for
stopping by with his sawzall. Nice to meet yet another club member
who will go out of their way to help out.

I'm soaking the ends in WD-40, afterwhich I'll clean off the surface
rust with a wirewheel, then install the new shaft. Looking forward
to tighter steering.

Subject: Re: Auto ZJ to Manual ZJ need info

You probably already know that only a small number of ZJs were
produced with manual transmissions. I think 1993 was the only year,
but there may have been a few made in 1994 too. The 1993 ZJ FSM has a
full description of the manual transmission conifiguration for the ZJ.
I suspect that XJ parts were probably used. Early ZJs (early 1993
production) shared a lot of XJ parts. I don't know how many XJs were
made with manual transmissions.

The AZVJC is mostly TJ oriented. You might want to post on a ZJ
specific newsgroup to get more information.

good luck!

We cannot MUD on ANY STATE TRUST LAND unless it is an actual trail
!!!................. Most of the urban State Trust Lands on the north
edge of town are now closed to motorized use so be very careful and pay
attention to the signs posted in each area. We also need a State Trust
Rec Permit to drive on State Trust Lands for any reason...........BLM
doesn't have as much problem with "mudding" but it also needs to be "on
an existing trail" and there aren't many places to do so. Driving,
sliding or powering through anything OFF ROAD or CROSS COUNTRY or in
WIDE AREAS such as parking areas or wide areas alongside a trail is not
acceptable.........it simply gets us all in trouble. The east coast
seems to accept "mudding" more than the southwest so until this sport is
accepted here we must be very careful and respectful..............

The greenies seem to think even if we're "on a trail" and drive through
the mud we're "destroying the resources" and they report to the agencies
every time they see it.

We're hoping to add "mudding" courses to some of the "OHV Parks" around
the valley. Hopefully this will allow "mudding" to be recognized as a
sport for our recreationists................ it's just hard for the
agencies to accept as "respectful".
