Maybe you had a vacuum leak and it was adjusted to run good with the

After not being happy with my custom stainless braided extended brake hoses (they are just too flimsy, I broke one the 1st time out) I decided to check on other options. Custom hoses are not cheap. I found that stock brake hoses from a 1986 Chevy C-30 truck are 6" longer than the stock CJ hoses, very heavy duty and actually fairly cheap. You can but them at Auto Zone for $15.99. Get two drivers side ones they will work on either side and are $4 cheaper than the passenger side ones. I personally think that you will be much happier with these than the more expensive braided stainless steel ones. These should work on all 76-86 CJ7 and CJ8 and most likely CJ5 too. Enjoy and save those extra bucks for other mods.

An old school mechanic recently taught me this "trick" called Gravity Bleeding. Its simple. Just start at the front, open both of your bleeder valves and let them open until fluid runs freely out of them then tighten them back up. Do the same for the back. I was amazed, it really works and NO more having someone in the drivers seat pumping and holding while you open and close bleeders one at time while getting fluid sprayed all over you :-)

Subject: [az_vjc] Trac-loc LSD... rebuild...
Hi all,
Question about used Trac-loc differential... I am looking to buy a used one
for my '97 TJ rear Dana 35. I understand, though, that these "factory"
LSD's will wear out over time and usage (due to the clutches?). Anyway, I
also understand that these are rebuildable.
Question...How?
I am comfortable with taking the cross-pin and spider/side gears out,
however, how do I bring it back to like new anti-slipping performance? What
do I replace and are their any "kits" I can buy to make it like new again?
Thanks in advance for any help!

FWIW...Ditto on everything Steve said. This is what I've been told
every time I've gone to get a new permit. The group should be OK as
long as the "leader" has a permit. But yes, the leader/permit holder
must also assume responsibility for the group.
You can just add the plate numbers of the people in the group on the
back of the permit. Different coumn of plate numbers for each trip date
you make in the 6mo period.
I don't really 'think' the rangers are concerned with enforcing the
permit thing for everyone in the group. They're probably happy to know
that at least the group is being lead by someone that is aware of the
rules and restrictions.

It is a 6 month permit. The combination to the locks changes each month
and the permit gives you 6 months worth of combinations. You only need
one permit but that person must list all the license plate numbers on
the permit. I was told that I could add them as needed. The permit
holder is responsible for anyone traveling on their permit and they must
stay together. I've held a permit since the opening of that trail.

with people being there with out permits. Your permit has to match
the one they have on file at the office you got it from I would

the person on the phone is writting it down.
Why wouldn't you want your own they are free?

In short,If you do a lift the proper way, it will handle as good as stock if
not better. The problem with lift kits is you can put the same lift on two
different rigs and both will handle different. The key is to fine tune each
suspension individually.
Lift kits change caster & steering geometry, there are alot of factors why
rigs have handling problems after a lift, but caster & steering geometry
being changed is the biggest problem when it comes to handling problems. You
can make any rig handle great on the road, you just need to take the time
and money to fine tune the suspension.
Ray the rear end in your Scrambler should be a AMC 20. If you put in flanged
axles and truss the housing you will a very good rear axle. I have seen 400
plus HP put to them without any problems.

I'm still running my original AMC20 in my CJ-5, albeit no longer with
stock components. These axles (in stock form) are considered weak due
to the OEM two-piece axles which is a weak point that tends to spin
when too much torque is applied. Most AMC 20 rears you'll see will
have replacement one-piece axles (or in my case Warn full-floaters)
which eliminates this weak point.
The axle housing tubes are also slightly thinner than other axles but
I've never had any problems with them. As long as you aren't jumping
your rig you shouldn't either. The biggest problem I have with it is
the diff cover hangs below the diff housing and tends to peel back
when scraped over rocks, causing it to leak. Nothing a decent diff
guard wouldn't solve.
The AMC 20 ring and pinion is actually larger and much more stout
than the Dana 44 and some other differentials. I've had my 4.56 gears
and Detroit locker for almost 5 years now and haven't had a problem
with either of them. I just had the diff cover off yesterday
(replacing the leaking diff gasket) and the gears still look brand
new (and I wheel it pretty hard).

BTW, even with the prior damage, it wasn't exactly difficult to get
through with a Jeep. The problem that those with lesser vehicles
were driving to the side of the road, creating more and more damage
(and a trail 5 vehicles wide).

I haven't been able to find the leak but was told it would probably cost me around $7-$800 to have replaced. He also said this is a fairly common problem with 4cyl Jeeps. Anyone had any experiences with this or know where I can get good reasonable repairs?
Thanks, John Remmers

Maybe you had a vacuum leak and it was adjusted to run good with the
leak and now you have to adjust it to run without one.

Thanks in advance for any help!

every time I've gone to get a new permit.

It is a 6 month permit. The combination to the locks changes each month
and the permit gives you 6 months worth of combinations. You only need
one permit but that person must list all the license plate numbers on
the permit. I was told that I could add them as needed. The permit
holder is responsible for anyone traveling on their permit and they must
stay together. I've held a permit since the opening of that trail.

the one they have on file at the office you got it from I would

This is an old message. The road was repaired in September and now

BTW, even with the prior damage, it wasn't exactly difficult to get
through with a Jeep. The problem that those with lesser vehicles
were driving to the side of the road, creating more and more damage
(and a trail 5 vehicles wide).

Subject: [Tech] '98 TJ 4 banger - Coolant leak
My friend told me that the reason I'm probably leaking coolant from the bottom of my motor is that it's blown it's head gasket. I haven't been able to find the leak but was told it would probably cost me around $7-$800 to have replaced. He also said this is a fairly common problem with 4cyl Jeeps. Anyone had any experiences with this or know where I can get good reasonable repairs?
Thanks, John Remmers
