Jeff/Kat -
And where are we actually meeting? Trip notice says both the campsite
area and just off the Hwy 79 turnoff.
I've volunteered to lead a group thru Jackhandle. Run start time says
8am. I plan to get to the group meeting spot (whichever it may be)
around 7:30 - 7:45 (gonna be a cold drive!!!). It may take a bit of
time to figure everything out, depending on how many people show up and
who wants to do what run, but hope we can get rolling relatively quickly
and smoothly.
Game plan for my run will be to get back to the group meeting area
between 11 and noon so we can eat lunch there, help Jeff and Kat clean
up, and then head on home (or back out for more wheeling if anyone's
sticking around).

I run 31x10.5 on 8" rims. I think they work better when airing down. They
help give you a bigger foot print and help keep the beads seated on the
rims.

James,
Actually that is what I was going to do. Would have plugged off the
back of the t-case and done just that, however after the u-joint let
go the rotation of the driveshaft rounded off the bolts on the
retainers holding the driveshaft to the rear diff, could not get a
wrench on them, vicegrips were no good either. Yes, they rounded
off that fast, even found one bolt head to be bent. Did have a
friends blazer go through this once, only had a couple of blocks to
go so we used the tow strap to hold the driveshaft off the ground to
drive home in front wheel drive, did not think that was a good
option for the distance we had to go.
I agree, I need more caffine too this am...
Still looking for parts if anyone has them...

David,
The thinner the rim the better it can hold the tire's bead when aired down.
The wider the rim the more stability and flatter foot print when aired up.
An 8" width will help with a flatter foot print and more on road stability.
You can run the tires with a slightly higher psi then with a narrower 7"
wheel.
On a 9.5" tire you would probably want a 7" wheel to hold a better bead. A
7" wheel works great on tire up to 10.5" wide. I went to an 8" wheel for my
33x12.50 tires. The narrower wheel also keeps more tire under the flares
also.

Well, there's more to those PSC comp cut corners than just figuring out

You also have the tail gate hinges to deal with, etc.

There should be a stop light switch on the upper part of the brake
pedal......it sounds like you just need to adjust it so the light isn't on
until you push the pedal.

I would not do the competition cut unless you plan on running big
meats and extending your wheelbase. From what I see most people
comp. cut their rigs so they have clearance for the extended
wheelbase. I believe this sort of a cut might look odd with the
stock wheel base. However I have never seen it that way so I could
be wrong.
If you want to cut it up to look nice, Rio (blue TJ in pic) did a
great job on his. It's a nice, clean and unique cut.
Many people move their tank into the bed or run a fuel cell with the
comp. cut. I have heard of many people running the filler neck into
the wheel well in some way.
As for the hinges, you could always go to a CJ style gate that will
fold down rather then open out.
Also, plan on doing LED lights at the same time as I believe the PSC
corners come precut for LED lights.

Another penny's worth....
I don't know how strict the cops are, but if you cut your fenders and
still want to run it on the street a lot, you may have to get some mud
flaps to hang on it.
Anybody have more information on this than I do?

How does the Bear Turbo http://www.bearturbo.com/a_turbokit.htm
compare to the Avenger? Was there a reason why you went with Avenger
kit instead? Just curious. My old ZJ wasn't exactly the peppiest Jeep

didn't seem like there was enough room in the engine compartment for
it.

Hi,
The last few weeks I've noticed a natural gas/propane kind of smell when driving around town with the windows out in my '99 TJ. It has 72K miles on it.
I know when the catalytic converter starts going bad it smells like sulfur or rotten eggs. Called the dealer today and they said they've never come across such a problem as I describe.
Anyone ever had the same problem or heard about it, and if so what was the fix?

That does sound just like what I have been told will happen when a cat

Those are mine. I originally cut the rear wheel wells up to fit the
35's with 3" of lift. I cut right up to the bottom of the inner wheel
tub. Leaving the pinch welds intact. Here is a picture of that.
http://members.cox.net/rioshilo/old%20fender%20cut.JPG
You can see that the rear angle matches the front angle. I then changed
it because I got tired of tagging the bottom of my corners on rocks. I
didn't want to make one of those wrap around bumpers because of the loss
of clearance. So... I made a really short rear bumper and cut the
corners down to match. Now there is nothing back there to catch. It
still looks the same now as it did in Freds picture, only I went back to
black. Here are some more recent pictures
http://members.cox.net/rioshilo/urban%20wheeling1.JPG
http://members.cox.net/rioshilo/urban%20wheeling2.JPG
When I extend my wheelbase I will cut it comp style, and put a fuel cell
in the back.

LInda, I saw a Turbocharger and a Supercharger both on two ZJs last year.
One was on a 5.2 and the other on a 5.9. The SC on the 5.9 made it a real
screamer. I would think he went with the Supercharger as they will work at all
RPMS. The Turbo usually only works at 3000 rpm and above or at full throttle
depending on the model.

James,
Actually that is what I was going to do.

David,
The thinner the rim the better it can hold the tire's bead when aired down.
The narrower wheel also keeps more tire under the flares
also.

That looks nice, but I've grown fond of the look that those

I guess I could always buy the full corners and hack them, then the
body itself...But I would hate to spend the money on something like
that then hack 'em up. Just a thought.

Ok, checked out the picture, it looks to be a CJ7 not a TJ, a picture of the
other side would help to see if there are any lines over there but I dont
think you will find any. I would guess he has a fuel cell mounted in the back
instead of a seat as I do not see a gas tank in the picture.

Well, I bought it, I now belong to the multiple jeep club. I haven't really
looked it over close yet but I know that it drips oil out of the rear main
just like any other 100k+ vehicle. I will check out the specs later.. Did
it come with factory skids? An option? Its' got a hitch, no console, no
sound bar, no locks/windows/tilt/..Pretty stripped.. It's got a 3-1/2"?
lift and idiot lights instead of gauges.. 4WD works good in both low &
high... Now I got an '85 Bronco II for sale !! (C'mon Tom, I know you want
it!!) Bob J

rear housing , at about the 10 o'clock position on the diff cover . Does it
have the 3 factory skid plates , receiver hitch , factory gauges , console ,
rear sound bar , power windows/locks , tilt steering , is it lifted ,?????
Tell us more .

Well, there's more to those PSC comp cut corners than just figuring out
what to do with the gas tank filler.
You also have the tail gate hinges to deal with, etc.

There should be a stop light switch on the upper part of the brake

My .02
I would not do the competition cut unless you plan on running big
meats and extending your wheelbase.

My old ZJ wasn't exactly the peppiest Jeep

didn't seem like there was enough room in the engine compartment for
it.
Linda

Hi,
The last few weeks I've noticed a natural gas/propane kind of smell when driving around town with the windows out in my '99 TJ. It has 72K miles on it.
I know when the catalytic converter starts going bad it smells like sulfur or rotten eggs. Called the dealer today and they said they've never come across such a problem as I describe.
Anyone ever had the same problem or heard about it, and if so what was the fix?

That does sound just like what I have been told will happen when a cat
goes bad. at 72,000 miles, you are probably about due.

Subject: Re: TJ rear fender cutting...Question...
