Subject: Squeaking Problem
I have a '91 XJ and for the last few weeks there has been a squeak
when going down the road. We put it up on jack stands today and
isolated it to the area around the transfer case or the u joint.
While on the stands, if the vehicle is in 2WD, no squeak. When the
vehicle is then put in 4WD and XJ is in drive, a bad squeek from
around transfer case or U-Joint starts. But once you go back to 2WD
drive it will stop again. Any Ideas?
Right now the vehicle the XJ is up on stands, if any one is around
today and around north Phoenix can help me figure it out it would be
appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for all who called to help. AAA towed us back to Wickenburg
and Rick Norman lent us his trailer to get it the rest of the way
home. We did receive a few calls and we appreciate everyone's help.
The front yoke at the transfer case will need to be replaced, the
driveshaft end at the transfer case is shot and the bolts holding the
u-joint to the rear diff are all rounded off from the drive shaft
rotating until we came to a stop.
Just to let you know the u-joint let loose while we were doing
75mph+, just shy of the 99 mile marker, about 30 miles short of
Kingman.
We are still looking for the parts, so if anyone has upgraded to a

looked pretty anemic there, without one or two applied to the sides
of it.
WOW! Did I notice a difference just pulling it back into the garage!
The throttle response was much improved, and the exhaust has that
deep-throated sound I was looking for!
I was looking into going nitrous this winter, or maybe even an
engine swap (small-block chevy, of course). But just these racing
stickers have given me the horse-power and torque I was looking for!
But with any major modification, questions abound;
Do I need to beef up the bottom end, to deal with the increased RPM's?
Will I need to run premium fuel to hold down the chance for
detonation?
And most importantly, will I have to peel off the stickers to pass
emisions?

One of the guys in my old club compiled all the info into that
spreadsheet. It comes in handy sometimes :)
There's a Ford T-18 which you'd need an adapter for, and a Jeep T-18
which bolts right up to the Dana 20 (the setup I have). I imagine
the rebuild shop you buy one from (rebuilt is best choice imo to
avoid the unknowns of a junkyard tranny) can answer adapter
questions. I recall having to decide on the output shaft for the 20
versus one for a Dana 300 - which would've been preferable had I
enough $$$ to swap out the Dana 20 at the same time.
I replaced my T-150 3 spd which was 4" shorter than the T-18, so I
had to shorten my rear drive shaft. I imagine you'd have to do
likewise, but I'm not sure how long the T-15 is, but likely shorter
than the T-18 also. Here's the off-road.com Jeep trannys page where
most of his info came from)...

be about $100 more than the standard HD SYE, I believe.

The Super Short JBConversion SYE will also require a speedometer adapter
(not included) if you wish to continue to used your speedo. I've not
found a price on the adapter yet....JBConversion simply says they will
discount the price for people getting the super short SYE.
While it is always nice to have the longest drive shaft possible, the
extra expense is not justified for a 3" lift, IMO. For folks doing a
belly up flat skid and 5" of lift, it could certainly make the rear
angles more tolerable.

2 yr ago I swapped my 5 speed for a 700R4 AT. Good deal. Tranny performs well and off-road work load greatly reduced. Problem is that ingine performance was weak and running at hightway speeds meant going into 3rd gear on slight hills. In May I installed an Avenger supercharger. Results have been very disapointing! SC is touted at producing 5-6 lb of boost. Mine tops out at 3lb. Many phone calls and a visit to Avenger reps have gotten me nowhere. I may have created the problem myself but I am getting minimal factory help from Avenger in trying to sort it out. They sent me to Dicks Performance shop in Phoenix where a half day of tweaking and trying different settings on my timing and syncrhonizing produced only worse results. They finally concluded that I must have excessive back pressure in by exhaust line and assured me that if I went home and removed the cat. conv. I would find it obstructed. I went home, removed it and found nothing wrong with it. So....I'm still looking and hopeful that I will solve theis puzzle. My primary message is; Don't count on a lot of factory support from the Avenger people.

Thanks

The front yoke at the transfer case will need to be replaced, the

WOW! Did I notice a difference just pulling it back into the garage!
The throttle response was much improved, and the exhaust has that

I was looking into going nitrous this winter, or maybe even an
engine swap (small-block chevy, of course). But just these racing
stickers have given me the horse-power and torque I was looking for!
But with any major modification, questions abound;
Do I need to beef up the bottom end, to deal with the increased RPM's?
Will I need to run premium fuel to hold down the chance for
detonation?
And most importantly, will I have to peel off the stickers to pass

Subject: [Tech] 2000 4.0 TJ - 700 R4/Avenger Supercharger install/don't reccomend
