The pump is making a knocking noise like the bearing has gone bad inside. How difficult is it to replace? Anything that would give a shade tree mechanic real difficulty? It looks simple enough but that is always how things start out.

Yes, I had way too much forward breaking despite the
claim by Stainless Steal Break Corp. that the stock
master cylinder would work. In the end I got a master
cylinder from a 74 or 76 Corvette with four wheel disc
and it bolted right up with no modifications. It even
had bleeders just above where the break lines entered
the master cylinder (way cool!). In trying to
troubleshoot my break problem, before the master
cylinder change, I had also removed all the
proportioning valve innards and turned it into nothing
more then a distribution block. I figured that if it
was the problem the worst that would happen was
locking up the rear. As it turned out it wasn't and
taking out the valve didn't do a thing. I've been
running with the valve removed ever since and the
natural proportioning of the break system seems to be
just right. I got lucky.

Eventually the water would still get hot.
The only reason a thermostat is needed is to heat the engine up
sooner, not really a necessity here in AZ. MN is another story. :)

I dunno.... Even in AZ, today's engines might not run at their designed
temperature in the winter without a working 'stat. F'r instance, I have a
180-degree thermostat in my Jeep, and in the summer the engine typically
runs anywhere from 180 to 210 (and sometimes a tad more than that, even).
But in the winter, it's smack on 180 all the time, which makes me think
that if I didn't have the thermostat it might run too cold.

Ok, here's what you do.... See the two hoses that run to the heater core?
Disconnect them on their engine side, take your garden hose (with a valve)
and stick it up to the end of one of the hoses (seal it) and make sure the
other hose you disconnected is pointing down. Blast away... Now, reverse
hoses and blast away again. I'll bet you, your heater core is gonna caugh
up some really ugly stuff. You should have hot air now.

Unless very weak antifreeze was used (causing rust = blocked core), I
think Jeep is a little young for blocked core; If the TJ is similar
to almost all older Jeeps, there is a vacum motor controlled door
(under dash) which opens (via control on dash) allowing are to flow
past heater core. If a crack / disconnect occours (even on other
vacum system causing low vacum) the door will not open. Look under
dash for vacum motor (aprox 2.5" dia, .75 thick with vac hose
connected); with engine running and heater on, disconnect hose and
cover with finger to detect vacum --- In

After you've had the engine warmed up, you can feel both hoses. If both
hoses aren't hot, then you have a plugged core. Suppose you should do this
before doing what I wrote.

I would agree, Brandon , but the original post was kind of vague as

that is one of the first things they will tell you to look at!

I can make it easier yet..., if the guage shows the engines' hot
(assuming it works), but you got no heat, then look for a vacuum
leak/motor problem under the dash.

I have the same problem on my 97 TJ. Both hoses get hot, but air is
only slightly warm out of the vents.

Under the dash on the passenger side , there is a cable that moves a vent
door from A/C to heat. If you have someone move the control from hot to cold and
back while you watch under there, you'll see it. Usually the end of that cable
has been accidently kicked loose by a passenger, but you can manually move it
to the heat position(you'll see what I mean when you look under there). Hope
this helps.......

I would agree, Brandon , but the original post was kind of vague as
to the severity of the problem. And if you go to any repair manual,
that is one of the first things they will tell you to look at!

If you would just buy your wife that TJ she wants, you wouldn't have
to worry about that stuff!

Looks like it's missing control arms, track bar and lower spring mounts.
All it shows is upper spring mounts and springs.
