Hello All,
steve sample lead a trail run Saturday, November 22, 2003 across Ajax (Upper)
started out looking like rain----cold front moving in. sun came out and cold wind all day. we ran upper woody and upper ajax. jim brought doug and his son josh from michigan in their TJ. they figured H2H was too much so we skipped that one. all but doug ran the firehole. other that that obstacle.....upper woody is like a freeway anymore. upper ajax has been filled with rocks so much that it is pretty casual also. these were perfect trails for doug to get his feet wet in the AZ ROCKS. <br>
<br>
thanks for the great day guys and we will do it again soon.<br>

Subject: [Tech] - bed liners
I have been reading some on bed liners and was wondering if any of you have used POR15,What a liner, or herculiner? I have some rust in the bed of my scrambler. After sanding it still shows pitting. from what I have read POR15 is the best rust treatment, however it needs some sort of overcoat to protect it from UV rays. I thought I might top coat that with Herculiner or some other bed liner. The information I read from Herculiner says that the black color needs some sort of UV protection too. Well, sounds like everything needs UV protection and there isn't too much of it here in the southwest. So, what have you all done or heard about and how has it worked for you?
Thanks

I had the same problem with my MJ I tried the do it yourself roll ons and
they seemed to chip and peel after a while. Tried the do it yourself spray on
stuff on my CJ7 and it wasnt any better. On my Scrambler, I cleaned
everything up again real good, used POR15 and then took it to Rhino Linings and got
the whole inside done from front to back for $425 and I am MORE than pleased
with the Rhino lining. They sprayed my floors 1/4" thick and the walls and roll
bar about 1/8" thick. No problems with peeling or cracking and real easy to
wash out if you need to. I dont think I could scrape it off it I wanted to,
it is really tough. I would highly recommend Rhino Liners. Save your money
on the do it yourself stuff and get it done right the 1st time with a
lifetime guarantee.

Well, since it's quiet I'll throw this back up there.
Only got one confirmed response The Great Turkey Day Wrench Fest, so
Kevin and Kelly are in. The offer is still out there for anyone who wants.
I am smoking an 11 lb turkey, should be off the grill between 2 and 3,
and am making my Cajun sausage and oyster dressing. Hoping to get a few
more folks, and maybe do a low level pot luck sort of thing.
Wrenching is optional (for y'all, I'm gonna be in the garage some),
football is not. If you have a project you need a little help on
perhaps we can knock it out too.
FYI, I am centrally located in the "Historic District", downtown
Phoenix, so it is easy to get too.
Wear the loose pants and the belt with the extra notch.

Ok, here's the rest of it ;)

Took the flare off:

Let's see, I'm cutting off stuff with the plasma cutter:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Cutting.JPG
Mmmm, it's pretty much all off now:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Exposed1.JPG
Ok, Dan's grinding some of the rough edges off:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Grind.JPG
Dan's trimming some of the other side:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/DanCut.JPG
Passenger side:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Exposed2.JPG
Underside shot of the new fender:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Underside.JPG
I'm putting the light trim back on:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/FredLight.JPG
Finished ! (Thanks for the help Dan !! )
Well, almost. I sill have to drill and bolt the top of the fenders.
I also have to drill and bolt that front hole in the rocker guards to
the new body panel.
Lastly, I'm looking (in some of the hot rod shops)for some really small
bulbs for the front turn signal/parking light, to fit right in the
front, tucked up by the brace. If I can't find anything that'll fit,
I'll use some CJ turn signals/parking light (round) and mount the in the
front grill, below the headlights:

Hey guys do 3:73 and 3:55 use the same ARB. If so I have one for sale. It will work good in a fairly stock newer jeep. I think most of the later ones come with 3:73 in them. It has 3:55 on it now and it is out of a yj.

OK here is the situation:
I am doing some nice rock crawling up to the mine at Martinez Canyon. I
have some nice air and then I start hearing this strange metal noise
(not good I know).
I am the only Jeep (with a friend in the passenger side) and I know that
is not good.
I keep driving a little to get to a solid smooth (as smooth as it gets
out there) ground to survey the damage.
Well not as bad as I thought but still not good for where I was at.
I will try to explain the broke piece as best as I can.
Front right knuckle of my Dana 30 axles (1985 CJ7). It looks like what
would be a u-joint in there that would keep the wheel spinning with the
axle. The u-joint looking thing broke and it was spinning separate from
the tire.
What I did is put it in 2 wheel drive (front was totally unlocked) and
unlocked the hub and got out of there with 2 wheel drive, not easy I
might add.
Does anyone know what that part might be called so I can sound somewhat
intelligent (I know I can't pull that off to well but with your help I
will not sound as dumb as I am)
I can take a picture of it also and will do in about 30 minutes.
And if anyone has an idea on how to get to it and how much it would cost
with me doing the work (and maybe a friend or 2.)
Thanks

Joe,
I couldn't access your pictures, but your description sounds like it
is the Axle Shaft Universal Joint and depending on where it broke will
depend on what parts need to be replaced. If the ends of either the
inner or outer "axle shaft yoke half" is broke, then they will need to
be replaced. If the "Bearing cross journal" (which is the part in the
middle broke, and it didn't damage the axle shaft yokes, then that is
all that needs to be replaced. I've never done one, but with the
right tools and a good shop manual, it shouldn't be too hard.
As far as where to buy the parts, either
4 Wheelers Supply

AMC 4X4 Salvage

Subject: Update on my first project...
Hi all...
I just wanted to give everyone an update on how I my first jeep
project is coming along...I know it is not much for some of the nice
rigs out there, but I can say I am doing it myself and having a blast
at it....except my check book isnt what it used to be...but I finally
finished putting on the lift, and got the timing chain and rear main
seal done...
I have been working on getting this done for about 3 weekends now.
It is an 83 CJ7 and I didnt want to go to high on the first time
around, so I put a 2-1/2" heavy duty Rubicon lift on her. I also
just finished doing the timing chain and rear main seal...The oil
plug was stripped, so I replaced the oil pan too. The oil leaks are
minimul now, but I just got my ne aluminum valve cover in the mail
(found a good deal on it at tellico4x4.com (only $59.95), so that
will be my next project...
Hope to see you all on the trails in the "near" future.
Check out the pictures in my Gallery if interested.
Thanks,
Philip Schaffer

I hate when that happens. Happened to me a month or so ago. Luckly I had
a spare and was able to replace it on the trail. (wish I could say the
about the main leaf Saturday). I picked up a spare one from AMC Salvage.
It is pretty easy to replace. You will need a socket for the axel nut
(36mm) an a 13mm socket for the bolt holding the spindle on. You may
also need a pan to catch any gear oil that might leak out when you slide
the inner axel out.
Wish I had hubs.
Attached photos will only make it to Joe. :)

Hello All,
steve sample lead a trail run Saturday, November 22, 2003 across Ajax (Upper)
started out looking like rain----cold front moving in. sun came out and cold wind all day. we ran upper woody and upper ajax. jim brought doug and his son josh from michigan in their TJ. they figured H2H was too much so we skipped that one. all but doug ran the firehole. other that that obstacle.....upper woody is like a freeway anymore. upper ajax has been filled with rocks so much that it is pretty casual also. these were perfect trails for doug to get his feet wet in the AZ ROCKS. <br>

thanks for the great day guys and we will do it again soon.<br>

Mmmm, it's pretty much all off now:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Exposed1.JPG
Ok, Dan's grinding some of the rough edges off:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Grind.JPG
Dan's trimming some of the other side:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/DanCut.JPG
Passenger side:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Exposed2.JPG
Underside shot of the new fender:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/Underside.JPG
I'm putting the light trim back on:
http://fredtj.com/images/photos/pcsfenders/FredLight.JPG
Finished ! (Thanks for the help Dan !! )
Well, almost. I sill have to drill and bolt the top of the fenders.
I also have to drill and bolt that front hole in the rocker guards to
the new body panel.
Lastly, I'm looking (in some of the hot rod shops)for some really small
bulbs for the front turn signal/parking light, to fit right in the
front, tucked up by the brace. If I can't find anything that'll fit,
I'll use some CJ turn signals/parking light (round) and mount the in the
front grill, below the headlights:

Joe,
I couldn't access your pictures, but your description sounds like it
is the Axle Shaft Universal Joint and depending on where it broke will
depend on what parts need to be replaced.
(602-273-7195 at 3530 East Washington) or
AMC 4X4 Salvage
(623 937-5899 at 6741 West Belmont in Glendale just south of
Grand Ave.)

Thanks

Hi I know the area well. I am planning on coming out on sat morning &
can lead a run if wanted. We will have to see what kind of Jeeps show
up to see what would be a good run.

Those pics work. It is the axle u-joint that broke and the outer stub does
not look good. When you get it a part I would check it very close before
reusing the stub shaft. Jim F.

Thanks,

I hate when that happens. Happened to me a month or so ago. Luckly I had
a spare and was able to replace it on the trail. (wish I could say the
about the main leaf Saturday). I picked up a spare one from AMC Salvage.
It is pretty easy to replace. You will need a socket for the axel nut
(36mm) an a 13mm socket for the bolt holding the spindle on. You may
also need a pan to catch any gear oil that might leak out when you slide
the inner axel out.
Wish I had hubs.
Attached photos will only make it to Joe. :)

Right on! I get great satisfaction working on my own Jeep. The best
thing about doing it yourself is that you know how to fix it should
something break on the trail.
