Hello All,Clint Travis is leading a Sunflower Mine Loop trail run on Saturday, November 22, 2003.

When: meet at 8:30 am
Where: At the Gas station name? on the South side of Shea closest to the S.R. 87 (Beeline) in Fountain Hills
Rating: 3.5-
Length: 6 hours round trip
CB Channel: 4

I am taking my sister from out of town for some Arizona scenerary and offroading. This trail runs by some nice mine buidings and is fairly quick trip. This trail would be challenging for a stock vehicle.

The Sunflower Mine Loop is a fun trail that offers a little something for everyone. It takes 3 – 4 hours to complete allowing for time to poke around and explore. The loop starts as an easy 2.5 trail that winds along a hillside and slowly descends into the canyon. After crossing a bridge you continue up the canyon until you arrive at the Sunflower Mine site. The mine’s processing building is still standing and is in decent shape. Stock vehicles can make this section of the loop easily, however the next section requires higher ground clearance and aggressive tires.

After leaving the mine the trails continues up a shady canyon becoming more tight and challenging as it runs across and up a rocky creek bed. The bed is usually dry but can be very slippery when water is running. After awhile you make a hard right turn up a steep rock wall obstacle and continue to climb a loose rocky road out of the canyon and into the pines and junipers. At the top the trail continues with some washed out sections, passes a couple of more mine shafts, and gradually becomes easier as you return to the loops starting point.

Remember to pack water, a lunch, and bring your camera.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

I know we just had a discussion about storing rods but this is a little

ripped up cardboard box on the ground, for how long I don't know... My question is
once the rods are (wet) can they be dried out in an oven and still be good?
and stored properly of course..Rob B Y2K-XJ

Subject: Does anyone have an engine diagnostic tool?

94 zj 4.0...Today I was waiting for a red light on val vista. When
the light turned green the jeep died. It wouldn't start, so I had to
push the heavy piece of crap off of val vista. I checked it over and
it was getting fuel and getting spark but still didn't not want to
start. I have no idea what is wrong with it. So if anyone has any
idea what it could be or have an engine diagnostic tool I can borrow
would be great.

Subject: [TR] Jack Handle - Sunday, November 23, 2003

Hello All,Joe Kearney is leading a Jack Handle trail run on Sunday, November 23, 2003.

When: Leave trial head at 7:00am
Where: Box Canyon entrance off of hwy 79
Rating: 3.5+
Length: 4 hours
CB Channel: 4

I am going to do a fast run to Jack Handle. I just want to get out and wheel. I picked 7 am leave trail head because I have to get back home pretty early.
I have ran this trail before but it was at night so if someone who knows the trail better wants to lead by all means please do but if not then I will.

Jack Handle is a nice but fairly short loop trail that has a number of challenging obstacles. It starts out in a fairly flat wash. It then winds around as the trail gets tighter and tighter.

There are a few small waterfalls and many table sized boulders to navigate along the way, including a fairly narrow slot that you have to scramble up. This slot makes it a very tight squeeze for full size vehicles (and probably not advisable). The trail can be run in about 2 hours or so.

The first guy to run this trail didn't see one boulder and ended up using his jack handle as a temporary tie rod to finish the trail so keep your eyes open along the way. When you think you at the end, the trail juts up out on the wash and gives you a view of the whole area. Then you are in for a few roller coasters and a steep drop back to where you started.

This is not a trail to be tried unless you are an experienced 4-wheeler with a well equipped vehicle. High clearance and some traction devices are required. Water and your camera are a must.

Subject: Who's got a boot?

On the way home tonight as I started to climb the hill from Rye to
Payson, my 92 XJ started running crappy and finally quit. Luckily I
found a road to pull off at and was in cell range, so I called my
wife to come down and tow me up to Payson. While I sat there trying
to figure out what the trouble was, a friendly DPS officer satopped
to help. Earlier in the week I had busted the heater hose over the
distributor and the jeep quit when the water got into the wiring.
After this happened, I had used WD40 to get the water out and the
jeep ran ok, but, my temperature guage and fuel gauge were goofy.

After the Highway Patrol left, (we figured it was the CPS), and I
was waiting for my wife, I remembered there wasn't a check engine
light until the engine died. I looked at the trip meter and I had
360 miles on it since the last fill-up! Even though the gas gauge
still read 1/4 tank, I realized that maybe, I was out of gas. The
wife showed up and towed me to the first gas station in Payson,
where I put $10 in the tank and she cranked right up.

Stupid, stupid, stupid, and in front of my wife too! I felt like I
needed a good boot in the rear, but I didn't say that to my wife, I
just grinned and said, "come on, I buy you supper".
Also after the patrolman and I messed with every wire under the
hood the gauges work just fine all the way home.

I guess the moral is to keep an eye on the trip meter and not the
gas guage.

No, Jenn is the only one I know from these pics. This isn't typical
of Oregon wheeling, but during the wet season (Oct-May) it's not
uncommon to get half as muddy on any given trip. Most trails up there
get muddy, but not too many deep mud holes like that one (that was on
private property and may have been manmade). Of course not too many
trails have a dozer standy by to pull you out either :)

Until recently, they also used to let a limited number of 4x4's in to
play in resulting mud hole after the annual draining of Foster
Resevoir. I never went but folks sure had fun there.

Worst case scenario: U-Haul rents the tow dollies for about $40 for the day
. You can go to www.U-Haul.com for a map of places near you .

Subject: OT Bad Gas Disposal

Ok, so I'm finally taking some time off next week and I plan to get
my Jeep trail-worthy again. It's been sitting for over a year, so I
know the gas in the tank has long since turned bad, so I plan on
completely draining the tank, but where do I take the bad gas to
dispose of it?

Does anyone know?

Thanks!
