Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Friday, November 28, 2003
Hello All,Tom Jacobson is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Friday, November 28, 2003.<br><br>When: Meet at 9am, leave 9:15
Where: Florence Junction Texaco
Rating: 4.0+
Length: 4-5 hrs
CB Channel: 4
Get off the couch and let's do a little wheeling! Day after Thanksgiving run thru Martinez Canyon. Will be a good opportunity to rub it in to the relatives visiting from out of town how beutiful our deserts are!<br>
<br>
This will be the full loop around Martinez Canyon. However, if any stock Jeeps show up, you're more than welcome to tag along as far as the Cabins. Can actually get stockers thru the wash following the cabins and up to the rock garden leading to the Mill, but I'll say/recommend a minimum 3" lift, 31's and preferably one locker/lim-slip to do the whole loop.<br>
<br>
I think the Mill is technically off-limits (private property), but the temptation to stop, look inside and snap a couple photos is hard to resist. Let's do our best to keep sightseeing outside the Mill and "look but don't touch".<br>
<br>
Come on out, this is one of the most beautiful canyons and trails there is to see!
Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.
Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.
The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.
A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.
As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a <b>drop</b> into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.
The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"
This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!
NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

I haven't received anything like this from PayPal, but I got a message
from a nonexistent site that purported to be similar to PayPal. The
message said someone had wired money to me, but since I didn't have an
account I had to fill out some information in order to receive the $$. I
*knew* the money wasn't mine, but I filled out the info so I could find
out who had sent the money. I wanted to let the sender know the money had
gone to the wrong person. Well, needless to say, it was a scam. I
immediately cancelled the credit card I had used, and put a fraud alert on
my credit reports. I haven't heard anything since, and haven't seen any
bogus charges on any of my credit cards, so I think I caught it soon
enough.

Subject: Bighorn Sheep transplant Florence juntion area
Well Hello, This may be of interest to the group, The Arizona Game
and fish recently transplanted sheep into the area around Florence
Juntion. This will mean that there will probably be incressed law
inforcement in the area. Also if there becomes a problem with moter
vehicals stressing the animals this area may be closed. We all will
need to be careful and tread lightly. I posted this on Arizona back
country and thought I would post here also, info is on arizona game
and fish web site
30 Desert Bighorn Sheep Captured and Relocated
TUCSON - The Arizona Game and Fish Department captured 30 desert
bighorn sheep in southwestern Arizona on Nov. 10-12 and relocated
them south of Superior as part of an ongoing effort to repopulate
bighorns into their historic range.
Game and Fish Department biologists, working with the Arizona Desert
Bighorn Sheep Society, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Army Yuma
Proving Ground and the ASARCO Mine captured eight rams and 22 ewes
from mountains in southwestern Arizona and relocated them to the
Mineral Mountain area south of Superior. Bighorns are believed to
have occupied the Mineral Mountain area historically, but
disappeared around 100 years ago.
"This excellent block of bighorn sheep habitat has been sheep-less
for nearly a century. Not any longer. Restoring Arizona's native
wildlife to historic habitat is one of the most rewarding things we
do," says Jim Heffelfinger, a biologist in the Tucson regional
office. Heffelfinger says there is a little irony here as well. "Two
years ago, after we began planning for this transplant, two bighorn
sheep appeared in the area on their own. We don't know where they
came from, but now there are 30 more to help them reestablish a
viable bighorn population around Mineral Mountain."
The transplanted sheep were captured in southwestern Arizona. There
were 13 sheep captured in the Trigo Mountains, one from the
Chocolates, five from the New Waters and 11 from the Plomosas. The
oldest ram released was 3.5 years old.
"We fitted 11 of the bighorns with radio telemetry collars so we
can monitor them via aerial flights over the areas. In addition,
sheep from the separate sources were given different colored ear
tags to monitor how well bighorns from different sources commingle in
their new home," Heffelfinger says.

I bumped into 3 sheep last summer while wheelin' south of Buckeye.
There were a couple of Jeeps on the trail. They were not very stressed
from us being there. We stopped and watched through the binoculars for
about 5 minutes while they slowly worked there way across a rock field
and out of site. Let's just hope the Fish and Game haven't come up with
a new way to shut down an area......if you can't find the right
endangered species in an area, just import it and THEN shut down the
area because they found them there. Yeah right! LOL
Tony.....roasted sheep tastes a lot of spotted owl if you use the right
seasoning. If you don't, it is much more like a condor.

Funny you should mention the owls. In Oregon and Washington they
closed a ton of areas to various types of recreation (not to mention
logging) due to those spotted owls. Don't be surprised if they use
the sheep as an excuse to drive folks out of the area. You'd think
they'd consider the type of use an area gets before placing the
animals there. I'm sure there are lots of areas already off-limits
to us where the sheep could thrive just as easily.

Actually they did............... much of this "pre-decision/discussion" went
through the MGCP (Middle Gila Conservation Partnership). I try to get
everyone involved in these meetings each month. Now you ALL can
participate.............. the next meeting will be December 11, 6:00p.m. at
the National Guard Armory at 52nd Street and McDowell........For the past 3
years the meetings have been during the day in Florence. We are now
alternating with evening hours between Tucson and Phoenix. If we see a
significant attendance we will continue with evening meetings so more of the
OHV community can have a voice in what happens in the FJ area......... if we
get a turnout like we did this week in Tucson (3) other than the normal
attendance, the meetings will go back to week days in Florence.
The inventory maps will be presented for our review...............
See............. you do have a voice. Actually they originally wanted 4
areas.............

Actually, my wife crams three in our 96 ZJ all the time. It's a
tight fit but it can be done. Remind him, though, that along with 3
car seats they'll need room for the triple stroller, all the diaper
and formula bags, the breast milk pump, etc., etc., so the ZJ is
really not condusive to hauling three kids and all the supplies it
takes to sustain them in the field.
Maybe he should consider an H2 :)

I am restoring this truck back from the dead. I have bought a new,

very helpful to see a Willys that is around my year with the F-134

I am not sure exactly how and where to rout the harness into and
around the engine compartment. Is there anyone around the Phoenix area

Didn't I read somewhere that Jeep was coming out with a bigger, like 7

Hello All,Tom Jacobson is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Friday, November 28, 2003.<br><br>When: Meet at 9am, leave 9:15
Where: Florence Junction Texaco
Rating: 4.0+
Length: 4-5 hrs
CB Channel: 4
Get off the couch and let's do a little wheeling! Day after Thanksgiving run thru Martinez Canyon. Will be a good opportunity to rub it in to the relatives visiting from out of town how beutiful our deserts are!<br>
<br>
<br>
I think the Mill is technically off-limits (private property), but the temptation to stop, look inside and snap a couple photos is hard to resist. Let's do our best to keep sightseeing outside the Mill and "look but don't touch".<br>
<br>

I haven't received anything like this from PayPal, but I got a message

message said someone had wired money to me, but since I didn't have an
account I had to fill out some information in order to receive the $$. I
*knew* the money wasn't mine, but I filled out the info so I could find
out who had sent the money. I wanted to let the sender know the money had
gone to the wrong person. Well, needless to say, it was a scam. I
immediately cancelled the credit card I had used, and put a fraud alert on
my credit reports. I haven't heard anything since, and haven't seen any
bogus charges on any of my credit cards, so I think I caught it soon
enough.

Yeah right! LOL

I don't think he can fit 3 car seats in the back......I can barely fit one
booster seat and a 6 & 7 year old on the seat.

Folks having triplets garner a lot of attention and gifts. Maybe
your friend could talk GM out of an H2....

Subject: 1948 Pickup wiring-help needed
I am restoring this truck back from the dead. I have bought a new,
original replica harness and am about to start the wiring. It would be
very helpful to see a Willys that is around my year with the F-134
engine and at least some of the original wiring in it before I start.
I am not sure exactly how and where to rout the harness into and
around the engine compartment. Is there anyone around the Phoenix area
that has one that I could look at? Thanks very much. Ed Dentino

I'd stick with the Jeep and just pull a trailer <LOL>
Didn't I read somewhere that Jeep was coming out with a bigger, like 7
or 8 passenger, "Grand Cherokee"? Now if he could just get the little
lady to hold off on the delivery for a year or so. :-)
Sometimes I just crack myself up. Sorry, been up too long today.

I will be getting a 2" budget boost. Will I be able to run 32s with this
lift, or should I go with 31s?
