Sorry for yet another OT, but this group can be such a great resource
for so many things.
Anyway, per the subject line, I need someone to come take a look at a
section of the roof on my house. Looks like some water was able to seep
back under the "tarpaper" that lines the wood under all the tile. A
section about 4 - 5 ft long has rotted the little trim boards along with
the larger (2x8) board behind that, plus a section of the plywood under
the paper and tile.
I'm in East Mesa.
Thanks in advance!

There were plans like that in the works by the to bring water from the
Columbia River or even rivers farther up in Canada to the Southwest,
including Arizona and California. The book, _Cadillac_Desert_,
documents some of these plans. Can't seem to remember the exact reason
why they never got built, but these would have been irrigation aqueducts
on a GRAND scale.

Your absolutly true on the irrigation. We "small" land owners get our
water when SRP schedules us which could be 2am or 1 PM. I talked to
the guy who built the house himself back on 73 and he said he built
it on calethcie (spelling) which is pretty damn hard. He had a hell
of a time getting it dug down into it. It took him 4 days w/ pick and
shovel to dig the footers. He also said the basement was built like a
vault. Steel rods every 24" and solid concrete in every single block.
Dont have to worry about falling into a hole if there is one. There
was nothing ever there on that portion of land. His parents owned it
along with the house behind it. He was the first to ever build
anything on it. 9th Ave was just barely a dirt road and didnt have
sewer back then so he tied into his parents which runs down Millet
Ave which runs the opposite direction. They did dig a very large
sewer ditch on 9th Ave which was later filled but dont know if they
compacted the dirt in the ditch. He did flood the basement one time
but that was because his kids had pet squirels they kept in the
basement window wells which tunneled out into the yard and when he
irrigated it came in the window. Which he later filled with 1' of
concrete in the bottom of the window well. They did have a big
problem with gophers which could explain the tunnels the water was
running into, but still doesnt explain where a swimming pool amount
of water disappeared and why one whole basement wall has standing
water next to it. I fill better about digging now to see what going
on next to the wall. I probably will start digging tonight and see
how far I get this weekend. Thanks all and still need a backhoe :o)

I read a few articles about a guy who worked for and oil company and
traveled the west looking for oil. He claims to have found an underground
river that flows something like 5-10x the amount of water that travels the
Colorado. He was offering to show the location to the goverment for what
would have amounted to a couple hundred thousand dollars a year in
royalties. He would get nothing if it wasn't there (except a little
notoriety). No one would believe him so he never divulged its course.
Was he a crazy old kook or a geologic genius?

Has anyone set this up? If not should we get a few people together
and select a trail or two? Select a date? Lets get this moving
forward.
I think we want to avoid anything during holidays so how about maybe
December 6th or 13th?
I know I have seen so far on the list for possible trails:
Predator
Judgement Day
Lower Terminator
Anaconda
I think there were a few others I have missed here, but this is a
start. I think we need to get this rolling and send them an invite
to the actuall event instead of keep talking about it.
Plus I think we need to think about a limit of how many an which
types of rigs we want to allow, 50 Jeeps against 2 hummers is not a
good match. Maybe we need 1 or 2 TJ's, 1 or 2 YJ's and 1 or 2
CJ's. Hands down a full blown rock buggy will dominate both the
Jeeps and Hummers so I am not sure we necessarily want to include
them in the challenge, but might be fun to have one or two of them
there too.
What do you guys and gals think?

The 6th and 13th are Saturdays for those without a calendar handy. The 6th is the Toys for Tots run to Martinez Cabin. On the 13th a group is headed out to El Camino del Diablo. Other than that there are no runs scheduled on the site. The club BBQ is on the 7th though (Sunday).
Of course we'll need to see if the Hummer guy is available, too.

I'm not sure how bad those trails are, but I'm game with my TJ. It's all stock except for the 31s. It's a 97 TJ 4.0. I'm sure there will be a lot of damage, but hopefully there will be some spares on the trail!

Predator you can get through with some spotting, by chance do you
have any lockers? If not we can try and get you one. Lower
Terminator I am sure we can spot you through, hell we took Sharky
through it without a front driveshaft...LOL
The other two are probably well beyond a stock Jeep, need bigger
tires and lower gears with lockers.
Mostly I am just trying to see if we are indeed gonna do this or if
anyone is even planning it.

It's all stock except for the 31s. It's a 97 TJ 4.0. I'm sure
there will be a lot of damage, but hopefully there will be some
spares on the trail!

This is what I was thinking. There is no way you want to take a
Stock TJ through ANY of those trails unless it is a Rubicon.
Also lets not tear up the trails by taking vehicles that have NO
business on them across them. Pick more appropriate trails.
Raw Deal should be find for a "stock" Jeep with a decent driver and
will be plenty of a challenge for a Hummer.

You can get through Lower Term in a stock TJ with 31's with some
spotting without tearing up the Jeep or trail. The concern of
tearing up a trail to me would come from the Hummers.
Raw Deal would be a good start for the hummers, here is to hoping a
few Rubi's will come through to run the trails...<grin>

New markers meant to keep sand duners inside the U.S.

For the past several months, people using the Imperial Sand Dunes south of Interstate 8 have benefited from signs warning of their proximity to the U.S.-Mexican border.
U.S. Border Patrol agents said those signs were created to keep people on the dunes safe by keeping them in the United States.
"If you end up on the south side, you can run into bandits or smugglers,” said Dan Sprick, commander of the Border Patrol’s Border Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) team in the Yuma sector. "That could be really bad.”
BORSTAR agents designed and planted more than 300 of the thin markers in the area just west of the All-American Canal and east of the Gordon's Well-Interstate 8 exit, Sprick said.
The markers were placed approximately 75 feet apart and stand between 3 and 4 feet off the ground to warn people on both sides of the border of their impending illegal crossing.
"If you go south of the border and you don’t go through the port of entry, then you are violating the law,” Sprick said.
Sprick said the patrol was concerned by the possibility of people on recreational vehicles driving into Mexico without being aware of it. Also, he said, the markers will help agents patrolling the area know where the line is in the midst of all the sand that has swallowed stone markers on that portion of the border. The border area east of San Luis, Ariz., has large stone boundary markers.
BORSTAR agents will periodically check on the markers to make sure they are not being vandalized or stolen, Sprick said, adding that doing so would be stealing federal property.

Okay so lets really compare Stock TJ vs. H1
Just visited Hummer.com and the H1 rolls of the assmebly line with
37x12.5x17's. Has 16 inches of ground clearance and a 72 degree
approach angle.
We'll compare with a stock Rubicon. 31's off the line with 10 inches
of ground clearance and a 44.9 degree approach angle.
The Rubi comes off with lockers, but Hummer has that package
available also.
That's not even mentioning the gearing and such. So I think we might
have some lee way with using a few built up Jeeps. That being said
though I will take my stock TJ with 31's up against them. Everything
can be fixed.

There seems to be quite a bit of interest in a Hummer v. Jeep run.
How about a Jeep v. all makes run. It would be fun to have a stock
class, up to 33-35" class and a unlimited class. Additionally,
since we are all offroaders, lets make it a landuse fundraiser. $5 a
head. All proceeds to be used for landuse issues. Lets invite the
Hummers, Yotas, Chevys, fords, Land Rovers etc... If there is
interest, I volunteer to be the Steward of this event. We could
pick a date in January and then I would set up 3 runs at Table Mesa
(or another area). Then we need to get the word out. Not everybody
could run bc we would need spotters etc... Anyone interested? If
there is interest I will take the ball and run with it. I would,
however, need help with links to other clubs sites so they could be
invited. Let me know what ya'll think...

Thanks in advance!

including Arizona and California.

$50K Hummer = stock H2
$50K Jeep = (could you imagine?!?!?!)

Subject: Instead of only H1/H2 v. Jeep. How about JP vs all -fundraiser
