View Full Version : PLaces to Play Around Flagstaff?

Early, Friday morning, my family and I are headed up to Flag to vist my Mom and Stepdad. I am expecting nasty conditions, traffic, backs-ups and if I am really lucky, whiteout conditions.

I got my sleepings bags, survival gear, food, stove, shovel and snow chains, and one nasty itch to go play in the white stuff. When I was younger, (uh, single) I headed up north to play in the winter storms all the time. I used to live in Flagstaff back in the late 90's and knew of some easy places to go play in the snow. I know for a fact one of those is a now a neighboorhood.

Any places around Flagstaff where I could go play in the snow with the wife and kiddo? Are the Cinders a good place still? East of town right? Lordy its been so long. Oh I cant wait!

If you take the road out of town towards the Snow Bowl...you'll see the big popular spot on the left hand side...big hill...high speed sledding. I've seen a ton of wipeouts there, and been involved in a couple. It's not very far outside town and you can't miss it. Take a helmet.

We have also gone up to Snow Bowl to sled near the bunny slope. Not sure if they are letting people in yet though. It'll be colder than ***** up there if the wind is blowing.

I just called my cousins who live up there because I couldn't remember the turn off but I think they are at work.....we went to a really fun place for sledding just on the south of flagstaff last year --- HCR's maybe you know the area??? I believe you take the Mountainaire Road exit from the 17 and then go left and you come to Kachina Road. Go right and Kachina will curve around to what is a park in the summer and a fun sled and snow play area in the winter. I'll get hold of my cousins before you depart and change this if it is inaccurate. :)

Here are some other links I dug up

we had a great time at the cinders sat, here is a link to some picks, should be plenty more snow up there, lots of hill for sledding and not many rocks though I seemed to find the only one

its a cinder pit, kinda like the dunes so you dont have to stay on a trail if you dont want

yeah - it is a lot of fun at the cinders - we used to go sledding there on aluminum trash can lids when I was a kid! (yeah, I was raised redneck)

I remember that there was that young girl found murdered up there in 1988...My uncle was a police officer up there at the time. I don't think we've been up there since before that happened so it has been quite a while.

Took I drive up to Snow Bowl last week and all along the way up the road there are 'No Parking without permit' signs, and at the top, just west of the lodge, where people used to park in the first lot, play in the snow, and sled down the hill, there are 'No Sledding' signs. I think they want to keep it all reserved for skiing only.

Ha ha! Ok, I guess I should have myself a bit more clear.... To heck with the sledding, I wanna play in my truck! I wanna go 4wheelin!

Back in the day, used to be Lone Star road or something, off the east side of campus also, used to go up the service road to the top of Mt Elden. Or run the pass road (if tis open) from 180 over to east Flag of 89. For the life of me I cant remember the name of it.

For sledding, if we get to do it, I know of a great spot on campus (assuing it is still there), where you can seld.

How east is the turn off for the Cinders?

turnoff isnt to far, quickest way is to take I17n to I40 east and exit at 89N, go ashort distance and turn right on 89n,about 7 miles turn right on fr 776, should be asign indicating cinders, go in a little ways and it is all wide open wheelin, get lots of pics so I can get the wife to go back up again if you would, have fun, if you take I17n into flag it turns into alt 89 and will get you there as well, just more red lights
