I would be more than happy to help with cage ideas and pointers. Most of
the time a "cool roll cage " is supposed to ment for bragging rights. It
makes my stomach turn to hear about what happened to Sharky. And Yes, I agree,
if it wasnt for his cage and tube work (Which was pretty intense) he would
not be here today. James Towel nailed on the head with cages, a big issue with
a roll cage is that it is only as effective as your restrainment system.
Maybe when the dust settles a bit, we can plan somehting or put somethign
together. My shop space has always been open to clubs functions, (BBQ, welding
clinics, etc..) when folks have asked. It woud be my honor.
Best Regards

He is stable and still listed as critical.

Thanks for posting that up. I read it and noticed that someone :) accidently
put the fund up as sharkysfund at hotmail.com instead of sharkyfund at

The events of this weekend got me to thinking about first aid and trauma,

in 5-6 hours at a cost of $35.00. The $$ generated is donated to fire
fighters charities. I have the contact info and would be willing to
organize a group effort if there is enough interest. It was also
mentioned that a few club members should consider taking EMT training at
a local community college. I'll be looking into that also.

Subject: Roll cages (Was: Re: Sharky's Accident)
We all know that lifted, modified vehicles are more dangerous at high
speeds than other types of vehicles and you have to be in control of
the vehicle at all times. Anything that impairs your ability to stay
in control is a good reason to take a break (being tired, screaming
kids, reaching for that can of soda, etc.). So a little common sense
can go a long way.
The goal of safety equipment is to keep the passengers inside the cab
during an accident or roll over. Not only is a roll cage important,
but some sort of screening/shielding on the top, sides and rear, good
safety belts, and a laminated windshield will help keep the
passengers from being thrown out. I would also be very concerned
about having fuel cells and passengers in the same space.

Not only is a properly built cage important in a rollover, but the proper
use of restraints.
You need to wear lap belt and shoulder harness. Sure the lap belt may keep
you in the rig, but without shoulder harness your upper body will be bounced
aroung like a pinball. The more aggressive the roll the worst it will be.
I know first hand how it feels, lucky I was wearing a helmet. This is why
full harness is required for competition now.

$35.00 is a good deal.........FYI, the ASA4WDC can arrange a full CPR course
for $20.00 per person but we'd have to travel to the Rim for it..........
IMO every recreationist should be CPR certified....... either would be a
good deal and we certainly all need to think about this. I cannot imagine
the guilt I would feel if something happened and I had to stand by and "do
nothing" because I didn't know what to do or what was doing more harm than
not.
I know we have a few EMT certified individuals within our sport. Maybe it
would be a good idea to get a list of those that are CPR certified already
as well as any EMT's within our ranks.

I am interested in a class, My wife would probably be interested also. With 2 small kids at home it would be good to know any way. I took the MCC first aid class years ago (1983). It was informative but takes a whole semester 2 nights a week. quite an investment in time, but it might be worth it if you ever need it.

Count me in too.....I need a refresher first aid course and was
thinking about EMT training even before Sharky's accident. The 10am
CK group got involved in a rollover also, but it wasn't a jeeper. We
stopped to have lunch at the usual spot and met a group of quad
drivers that also included a guy in an off-road modified golf cart.
The golf cart driver (and many of the quad drivers) had been drinking
heavily and was convinced that his golf cart could out perform any
other vehicle on the trail. Several of us were talking about him as
a potential Darwin award winner or nightly news special report when
he tried to do a hill climb that was too much for the golf cart.
The golf cart stood on it's rear bumper, dumped him out onto the
ground, then rolled over backwards and landed on top of him. I helped
get the cart off of him, and Leonard Pennock and a few other people
checked him out as best they could. The last I heard he was being
transported back to Phoenix in the "Pickle Juice" CJ.
Out in the boonies all we can count on is each other. Medical
training and supplies would be a good thing.......

Let me know asap. I will take off work tonight if needed to get the ball rolling..
