Subject: Sharky's Accident

This is the first chance that I have had to get online. I was with Sharky
up in Crown King Saturday night. Keith and I arrived about 11PM to get out
of the hot weather. I ran into Sharky just outside of town. He turned
around and met us back in town. We sat out in the parking lot with a group
of guys and just laughed and laughed and laughed. One guy in the group kept
saying to Sharky that he should be a comedian. About 2:30-3:00 AM we
decided to head back to Phoenix. It was a pleasant ride out Crown King. We
got down just outside of Bumble Bee and stopped on the side of the road to
make sure everyone was awake and alert. We laid down in the wash and stared
at the stars and was recapping the humor of the evening, still laughing hard
SO much we all complained our cheeks and stomachs were hurting. Anyone
that has spent anytime around Sharky knows he's full of energy.

I had been running point until we stopped. This time Sharky jumped out in
point. We went through Bumble Bee and were about 1 mile from the pavement.
We were winding through an S turn, Sharky drifted a bit on the left, which
sent him drifting as he tried to go right, his front left tire went slightly
into the ditch, and the only fricken manhole on the whole road was right
there. It hit the tie rod just inside the driver's wheel and pole vaulted
the vehicle end over end. It was the most violent thing I have ever seen.
I paced it off (54 Feet) the vehicle flew before the first impact. As I
came around the corner, his vehicle has come to rest facing me and on it's
side.

I raced up to the truck calling Sharky, Sharky Sharky! No response. He was
hanging upside down in his lapbelt. I reach down to support his head and he
was bleeding profusely and had labored breathing and was not conscious.
Keith now came around the corner and I screamed out for his help. We knew
we had to move him because of his injuries, there was no way to stop the
bleeding when he was upside down. I had to climb into the cage and hold
Sharky's jacket and Keith supported his head and we released the seat belt.
We slid him out just enough to get him level and I ran to get my first aid
kit. Keith climbed the hill struggling to find a cell signal.

I was able to get a pressure bandage on Sharky's head. Something had
sheared his ear off and exposed the soft tissue on the side of his head.
Praise the LORD the bleeding slowed. Keith held Sharky's hand and talked to
him non stop through the entire time until the paramedics took him. I was
able to climb and find a cell site and called 911. The Sheriff was there in
20 minutes, Black Canyon City Fire department was there in 30 minutes, and
they had him on a back board and transported to the awaiting chopper in 45
minutes. The closest they could get the chopper was Exit 248 at I-17. We
were only about 2-3 miles from that point.

Keith and I stayed with Sharky's Jeep, waiting for the tow truck. C&S
Towing, from Black Canyon City took the vehicle to their yard. We did not
know if Stacey would be able to meet the driver. He could not release the
vehicle to us, and could not leave the vehicle at Sharky's without the owner
being there. We instructed the driver to take the vehicle to the impound
yard. It took till early evening till I heard any news about Sharky's
condition.

We are praying and praying for his recovery and for his family. I am
available for anything, food, money, towing, chat ANYTHING for them!

Careful about those spreader bars and hanging sharp radios and stuff from
them. Near as we can tell the CB and mount is what skinned the side of his
head. It was also difficult to get him out of the vehicle. When designing
your cages be sure to leave adequate room to remove someone however the
vehicle lands..............................

Stu, if you asked there are probably others who don't know, no problem.

"Alternative Fuel Vehicle" it had a sticker that said, "Propane".
Remember the "Alt Fuel" fiasco Jane Hull created for us? This is the reason
my tuition went from $1200/semester to $1800/semester.

and these vehicles are struggling for gas....

Scott,

How is this for funny.... I sat at the Costco for :30 minutes
waiting for it to open for gas. They just opened the pump and a
Blazer pulls up and gets into line. I look at the license plate and
it is blue & white, that's right folks, AFV. I filled up and watched
these people sit there in line a while longer.
Does this vehicle help explain why this state is so screwed up?
(Our tax dollars hard at work)

PS - Costco on Country Club and Baseline got 2 truck load of gas
while I was sitting there and the price was $1.74/gallon.

Hi,

Please remember that $5 can be harder to come up for some than $200
is for the next man. Let's donate what we can and leave it at that.
The important thing is contributing to the cause. Let's not let
something as petty as our egos get in the way of that.

Joe,

That roll cage of Sharky's took one hell of an impact and survived with very
little deformation. Just make sure you leave head room or pad the hell out
of the cage, like he used too! And keep your lapbelt tight!

In your opinion: do think a plain old full roll cage would have helped or

padding on my rollcage... nothing like someone elses accident to show you

stared
at the stars and was recapping the humor of the evening, still laughing
hard
SO much we all complained our cheeks and stomachs were hurting.
Anyone
that has spent anytime around Sharky knows he's full of energy.

I had been running point until we stopped. This time Sharky jumped out
in
point. We went through Bumble Bee and were about 1 mile from the
pavement.
We were winding through an S turn, Sharky drifted a bit on the left,
which
sent him drifting as he tried to go right, his front left tire went
slightly
into the ditch, and the only fricken manhole on the whole road was right
there. It hit the tie rod just inside the driver's wheel and pole
vaulted
the vehicle end over end. It was the most violent thing I have ever
seen.
I paced it off (54 Feet) the vehicle flew before the first impact. As I
came around the corner, his vehicle has come to rest facing me and on
it's
side.

I raced up to the truck calling Sharky, Sharky Sharky! No response. He
was
hanging upside down in his lapbelt. I reach down to support his head
and he
was bleeding profusely and had labored breathing and was not conscious.
Keith now came around the corner and I screamed out for his help. We
knew
we had to move him because of his injuries, there was no way to stop the
bleeding when he was upside down. I had to climb into the cage and hold
Sharky's jacket and Keith supported his head and we released the seat
belt.
We slid him out just enough to get him level and I ran to get my first
aid
kit. Keith climbed the hill struggling to find a cell signal.

I was able to get a pressure bandage on Sharky's head. Something had
sheared his ear off and exposed the soft tissue on the side of his head.

Praise the LORD the bleeding slowed. Keith held Sharky's hand and
talked to
him non stop through the entire time until the paramedics took him. I
was
able to climb and find a cell site and called 911. The Sheriff was
there in
20 minutes, Black Canyon City Fire department was there in 30 minutes,
and
they had him on a back board and transported to the awaiting chopper in
45
minutes. The closest they could get the chopper was Exit 248 at I-17.
We
were only about 2-3 miles from that point.

Keith and I stayed with Sharky's Jeep, waiting for the tow truck. C&S
Towing, from Black Canyon City took the vehicle to their yard. We did
not
know if Stacey would be able to meet the driver. He could not release
the
vehicle to us, and could not leave the vehicle at Sharky's without the
owner
being there. We instructed the driver to take the vehicle to the
impound
yard. It took till early evening till I heard any news about Sharky's
condition.

We are praying and praying for his recovery and for his family. I am
available for anything, food, money, towing, chat ANYTHING for them!

Careful about those spreader bars and hanging sharp radios and stuff
from
them. Near as we can tell the CB and mount is what skinned the side of
his
head. It was also difficult to get him out of the vehicle. When
designing
your cages be sure to leave adequate room to remove someone however the
vehicle lands..............................

Brainstorming/rambling: Every time I hear of a Jeep accident I think of roll
cage issues. I've strengthened my Jeep "cage" some in the last year but I
know there is much more I could do. Would it make sense to have a "roll
cage" clinic one weekend where we get together for some
designing/fabricating/welding/padding? Is there an opportunity here for all
of us to consider strengthening our "sport bars" or cages? Joe started the
kill switch clinic last year after all the publicity over vehicle theft in
the valley (I'm very happy with my switch - thanks Joe!). Now with the
tragic accident Sharky went through, maybe we could learn from it, get
together and help prevent future injury while the incident is still fresh in
our minds. Some proceeds could go to the Sharky fund even. Do yourself some
good and some good for the Sharky family at the same time. Would it be
better to work through some of the shops represented in our group (Hunter/4
Wheelers Supply/etc.)? Jeep Cage Day?

I love it!!!

I say we all load up whatever junk we have taking up space in our
garages and yards and haul it over there. Then we can update the
post to reflect that the proceeds go to the Sharky fund. Though I've
recently cleared out my garage I know there is plenty of junk that
has collected in my fathers garage over the years that I can bring
over.

Won't that be a sweet surprise?

Can we please have one of the Yahoo groups moderators remove this event
from the calendar? It is a yahoo calendar event that was set to remind
every day.

Just a thought.......
Desert Fabrication owner, Todd, is a member of AZVJC and he has done
competition. The rules and standards re "cages" have changed considerably
over the past 3 years due to the devastating roll overs resulting from some
of the extreme obstacles. The standards developed for competition should
most likely be involved in what we all need to follow with our everyday
wheel'n.

I'm sure Todd can help as he built a competition rock buggy a year ago and
has been through a couple of tough rolls with it.

Just my $.02.............. I think the "clinic" idea is great and should be
pursued!!!

Subject: Roll cages (Was: Re: Sharky's Accident)

This is a great topic. I think the value of a good cage shouldn't be
overlooked. I had one of the OR Fab "sport" cages in my TJ which is
very similar to the one made my Toys by Troy. Looking back I can't
help but wonder how effective it would have been in a higher speed
roll like Sharkys. I believe it would have been fine in an offroad
roll because that is usually at slower speeds. But I think I
overlooked the kind of situation that happened to Sharky when I
bought it. I'm sure that it was definitely an improvement over the
stock setup. Thats pretty obvious. But would it possibly save my
life if I needed it to? From what I've heard about Sharkys accident
it may very well be that his well built cage made the difference
between life and death.

I'm going to be building up another vehicle when I get to Montana. I
think the first thing on my list will be to build a real cage
designed to handle a highway speed rollover. I'm thinking that frame
tie ins are not an option next time. I'd love to hear those opinions
on the matter again (even those from my friend Joe W;).

So we have learned to be careful about CB equipment and where its
placed on a cage from this incident. What other design features are
often overlooked?

I am sure glad you both were there and able to provide help so quickly.
You both did a great job.

The AZVJC has some of the best people I have ever known. The actions
and generocity of this group never ceases to amaze me.

We are all praying for Sharky and his family.

Subject: [az_vjc] Sharky's Accident

This is the first chance that I have had to get online. I was with
Sharky
up in Crown King Saturday night. Keith and I arrived about 11PM to get
out
of the hot weather. I ran into Sharky just outside of town. He turned
around and met us back in town. We sat out in the parking lot with a
group
of guys and just laughed and laughed and laughed. One guy in the group
kept
saying to Sharky that he should be a comedian. About 2:30-3:00 AM we
decided to head back to Phoenix. It was a pleasant ride out Crown King.
We
got down just outside of Bumble Bee and stopped on the side of the road
to
make sure everyone was awake and alert. We laid down in the wash and
stared
at the stars and was recapping the humor of the evening, still laughing

Also, don't forget overhead protection, between all the bars..
Look at any of the comp. vehicles.. The area over the drivers (and
passengers) head needs to be covered with a least a very, very, very heavy
wire mesh, if not a solid sheet of 6061 or 7075 or a sheet of steel.
The reason is, that during a roll, you don't want a rock protruding between
the overhead bars, wacking you in the head.

Best,
Fred
