Subject: Finished Currie J amr install, rear axle
First I just want to give a huge thanks to Dan, without his help this task
would have been much, much more difficult..
I'ld also like to thank Blaine Johnson, who has been more help to me than
perhaps he could imagine. His insights and never ending "pushing the
envelope" has been a constant inspiration.. Thanks Blaine.
Ok, what I did, was a rear shock relocation and installed the Currie J-arms
(lowers) on the rear axle.. The front axle is a much more difficult install
and will follow shortly.
First a lesson when welding and cutting with a plasma cutter..
Don't wear tennis shoes.. This is a 3rd degree burn and I got on my foot
while plasma cutting the stock brackets off the axle.. I physically pulled a
round chunk of metal out of this wound when I cleaned it out.. I also
invented a new dance, and discovered some words that I didn't know were in
my vocabulary. Oh, and even burned a steak or anything on the grill ?? Same
smell ;)
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm48.jpg
I had the mounting brackets for the j-arms, but it turns out that they were
a little wrong. Tow different sized tabs were required for each side, so we
had to fab up the missing two.
This is Dan smoothing the newly made tab, using an exising tab for a
template:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm5.jpg
This photo shows the two tabs:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm6.jpg
Here is the bracket, after I tacked it into place.. The j arm was used to
locate the tabs.. After they were tacked, the j arm was removed and a bolt
with three nuts were used to keep the tab from spreading or contracting when
it would be welded:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm12.jpg
I'm welding the tabs into place:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm14.jpg
I had some generic weld on shock mounts. We had to fab those some. Here's
one of the mounts marked, ready to cut:

I'm cutting the mount with a plasma cutter:

And Dan's finishing it up:

Finished:

After I've plasma cut the stock brackets off the passenger end of the axle,
Dan's cleaning it up with a grinder and flap wheel:

Here are some photos of the finished product:

All the stuff that was removed for this project:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm43.jpg
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm44.jpg
We took a test ride of several miles, after it was finished.. The Jeep rides
markedly better.. No more "rear squat" when starting from a stop or going
around turns.. Much, much better ride !!
:)

Hey there,
Just thought I would offer my house to rest the jeep at until they
have a chance to get everything out of it. Don't know if someone is
closer or not but I am on Greenway and Tatum....

am there. I too am pretty flexable tomorrow...

Theresa and I had a very funny experience today. We were coming home
from visiting with Joe and Joyce W when we decided to fill up our
crew cab pickup. We cruised past many stations with lines more than
a 1/4 mile long! Since there is no shortage of diesel and all the
stations have it we decided to keep driving until we found a station
with diesel that was out of all the various grades of unleaded. The
place was as deserted as a ghost town. I pull up to the green diesel
pump and start pumping my $1.59 diesel into the truck. Before you
know it there is a swarm of cars cruising the station and circling
the pumps like vultures. After they realize I'm pumping diesel some
of them would squeal out of the lot in frustration. One lady just
looked at me dumb until I told her that I was pumping diesel.
Theresa and I couldn't stop laughing at the situation. It was like a
swarm of locusts decended upon us, LOL. Anyway, I feel for all of
you that are running unleaded this week. Hopefully it gets better in
the near future.

Hi Fred,
I have heard that is a good alternative to long arms. Not short and
not long they are really a medium length arm. I look forward to
hearing about the shakedown run.
Anyway, between the j arms and the shock relocation you should have
a dramatically better feeling rig. Nice work.

I know I am not risking redundancy by saying that my family's
thoughts and prayers are also with Sharky and his family.
Difficult day to try and say a thank you. I now am wondering just
how near a miss I had on the way down. After stopping to help with
a flat fix, I lost a front trackbar bolt rendering the steering near
useless. Fortunately, I was just pulling away and not travelling
very fast.
I want to thank Tom ?Gordon for helping to find a substitute bolt.
He disassembled his jack mount to help me with the fix. I was able
to make it home safe and sound. I don't know what could have
happened if the bolt had picked a different time to come off.
The way that this group handles the tragedies like this is truly
amazing. A testament to the membership and a real silver lining to
this tragedy.

If it's organized right...you could have a couple going on the same

I only met Sharkey at the training session last year, but was
impressed with him and his "life is fun" attitude that I saw.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we got a call from Stacey, Sharky's wife. He's in stable condition but still in ICU. She said there are no broken bones, the doctors reattached his ear this morning, and they're keeping him sedated to keep him from moving around. The even better news is that they are getting responses to light stimulus from him. His vitals are good and strong. It wasn't necessary for him to have a shunt to help alleviate the swelling in his head, thank God. His parents are flying in tonight and will be there to help Stacey out as well. Stacey appreciates all of the help and prayers and she seems to be holding up really well. The phone hasn't given her a moment's rest since the word got out!
We'll post any updates as we get them.

Well that is good news. Adding my two cents, I think we should try
to keep the phone calls to a minimum, the good intentions of the
callers can soon become more of a burden than help. After something
like this they (the family) will need some rest. No offense to
anyone intended, just a comment. - Jose

Using RE lift kits, it takes 4.5" to accomodate 33". I imagine that's
pretty standard among ZJ lifts.

So far no change. His ear is reattached but very likely will not
take. He is still critical and stable. Still unconcious but they
are keeping him sedated until they are sure that the swelling does
not get worse and need to be relieved. His parents are in town and
we all just left the hospital for the night. His brother will be in
town tomorrow sometime. Stacey is home with the kids and they are
going to try to get some MUCH needed rest. She has been up since 3am
(the neighbors woke them up before the accident with their house on
fire) and will go back up there in the morning. The doctor will
check things out and possibly see about taking him off the sedative
and see if he will wake up. Cross your fingers and pray for him. I
know everyone wants to know things as they progress, but please try
to keep the call to the house to a minimum so they can get rest and
calls to/from the hospital and family without any trouble (no call
waiting). If anyone has any questions or messages for him or the
family, call Mike Anderson at 602-321-7873. THANK YOU ALL ! ! !

Here's
one of the mounts marked, ready to cut:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm15.jpg
I'm cutting the mount with a plasma cutter:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm17.jpg
And Dan's finishing it up:

I'm welding the shock mount on:

Finished:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm26.jpg
After I've plasma cut the stock brackets off the passenger end of the axle,
Dan's cleaning it up with a grinder and flap wheel:

Here are some photos of the finished product:

everything hooked up:

All the stuff that was removed for this project:
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm43.jpg
http://www.fredtj.com/images/photos/frarms/FRarm44.jpg
We took a test ride of several miles, after it was finished.. The Jeep rides
markedly better.. No more "rear squat" when starting from a stop or going
around turns.. Much, much better ride !!
:)

I was on my way back from camping with the family, and was in the left turn lane from the 260 WB at the 87. You were first in line to turn on to the 260 EB from the 87 SB. I was in my wife's Rodeo, so you didn't see me wave. Rig looks good tho Bill. Heres your Jeeper wave!!

If it's organized right...you could have a couple going on the same
day in the diff parts of the valley, that way each side of the valley
could help and raise even more money.....just a thought.
I only met Sharkey at the training session last year, but was
impressed with him and his "life is fun" attitude that I saw.
Prayers and thoughts are here too and will do whatever I can to help.

Subject: Sharky update

Thanks to everyone for donating to sharkys fund. Right now the balance is
right at about $1,000.00.
I am sure that Sharky and company will be most grateful. Donations have even
come in from Canada.
Several people have emailed me that read the posts via the yahoo page. The
yahoo page blocks emails so they couldnt get the address for the fund. its
sharkyfund at hotmail dot com. Mike was kind enough to modify the azvjc
homepage to show the paypal address on www.azvjc.org.
A few have asked where to send donations if they do not wish to use paypal.
You can send em via snail mail to:
Sharkys Fund
C/O Frank Minice
PO Box 865
Waddell, AZ 85355
I will make sure they get to Stacey.
Thanks everyone.

Well that is good news. Adding my two cents, I think we should try
to keep the phone calls to a minimum, the good intentions of the
callers can soon become more of a burden than help. After something
like this they (the family) will need some rest. No offense to
anyone intended, just a comment. - Jose

out of the money. Quasi cash is the easiest for you because you dont have to

Mike
