Joe,

I understand and I really do hope that you and I have discouraged the
unqualified individual from attempting a weld on skid...for all the right
reasons. :)

Since you don't have a bolt on skid, please allow me to update you on the
"off the shelf" bolt on oil pan skid. I am thinking they have greatly
improved since you last researched them.

I have one (pics and details on my web site) on my TJ. It bolts onto a
stock TJ and it fits my 10" lifted long arm, body lifted TJ too....no mods
needed on the skid....it simply bolts on. It covers the entire oil pan,
doesn't touch the frame or body, and offers every bit as much protection as
a same metal welded on skid. Mine is 3/16" thick (if I remember correctly)
and it fits flush to the pan....thus causing no more loss in ground
clearance than a 3/16" welded skid plate. I paid somehwere around $45~50
retail for the skid and it is available from any number of retail and web
based vendors.

Joe, my bolt on skid has none of the issues you stated it does. IMO, it is
safer and easier to install than any weld on skid (regardless of who is
welding it....you have no open flame under, around, or near the vehicle).
And I know how big of a guy you are on safety....having read dozens of your
arguments where you bring up personal and family safety as the most
important consideration. Like you said, why risk perforating the thin oil
pan metal and risk the chance of explosion and fire when it is not
necessary?

Thanks for discussion. I do believe that any invidual that was seeking an
oil pan skid might now know more than they ever bargained for. LOL

Stu

p.s. I am not attempting to take business away from John. He is a great
guy and from what I have seen, extremely good at his craft.

What is that? I know about the AC as in electrical but in a Jeep?

I had cooling problems with my TJ, went to a 3 core full brass radiator, and
had a machine shop make a spacer to replace the clutch fan, so my fan turns
constant with engine speed. It still runs 210, but does not climb above
that at idle (my original problem, with a/c on at idle, it would go up 240,
if you can trust the factory gages)
Also, my A/c seems to blow colder air.
Put in new pump, new thermostat (180).
Over all, I like how it runs cooler when crawling/going slow off road, even
with A/C.

Just get the "one hit wonder", glue it on with RTV skid from Turbo
City. It only fell off once in four years. I picked it up off the
ground, took it home, and reglued it. It would take quite a few hits
before falling off.

Okay so maybe not the best solution but just wanted to poke fun at

RANT MODE ON

Sometimes turning wrenches just bites, and I swear the CJ never was this
much trouble.

I put on my nice new diff gaurds the other day, now that I am all about
aromoring the underneath, and notice a little drip under the rear diff.
No problem, a little RTV in the bolt holes should fix that up. Goop it
up, put the bolts in and torque them down (using a torque wrench set to
the factory spec of 30 ft/lbs) last bolt is going an and I think "hey
that doesn't feel quite right, should have tightened up by now" SNAP.
Sheared off the top of the bolt flush to the diff cover. A bolt with
Grade 8 marking. I don't have a bolt extractor. I don't have the
stupidly expensive diff fluid I will need when I pull the cover.

I have no idea what I am going to do now (this is my daily driver BTW).
Probably won't be on the run up the hill on Saturday. Sometimes I
could swear this thing is possessed.

I hear ya. My last Jeep made me just insane with all the work I put into and
it and it never did end up working well.

You can borrow my bolt extractors if you like. I'm in Chandler.

I'm not familiar with you and your Jeep. What kind is it? When you mentioned
CJ, it seemed as though you were referring to a previous Jeep you owned.

I always "chase" the threads on the housing with a bottoming tap before installing the diff cover. It cleans out the leftover silicone, grunt, dead mice, etc. The bolts thread in much nicer, too.

Note to self:

Whining and temper tantrums (even public ones) are a poor substitute for
shutting up and solving mechanical problems.

Rest of the bolt came right out. No idea why it broke in the first
place, maybe that hole isnt' lined up perfectly. That would explain the
leak. Still, Grade 8 stuff shouldn't break that easily. Perhaps a trip
to CopperState.

I just talked to the guy who is painting my hood. He said he
would paint them both for $500. Wow, I thought it would be
less... Anyway let me know if you're interested and I'll give you
his number.

Kent, glad to hear you were able to extract the remaining piece of
hardware. I must admit that I still can't figure out how a Grade 8 bolt
snapped with a 30 ft. lb. setting on the torque wrench. That is and
might very well remain an unsolved mystery! (you didn't weld it, did
you?) LOL

Note to self:

Whining and temper tantrums (even public ones) are a poor substitute for

shutting up and solving mechanical problems.

Rest of the bolt came right out. No idea why it broke in the first
place, maybe that hole isnt' lined up perfectly. That would explain the

leak. Still, Grade 8 stuff shouldn't break that easily. Perhaps a trip

to CopperState.

The wife, kids and I are flying in next Thursday for a whirlwind 4
day (Fri-Mon) home search. I thought I'd try to sneak in a run (and
meet some of you) if there happen to be any night runs scheduled
during my time in town (and someone has an available seat). The home
search takes precedence, so this may be wishful thinking.

If any runs are planned and someone wants company, let me know and
we'll see if we can work out the logistics without causing me to
miss scheduled appointments and incur the wrath of the wife.

No, didn't weld it (but I could use a little bracket tacked onto the gas
tank......), but I am wondering if this is a counterfeit Grade 8. It
has the "RH" cast into the cap, which I think is Taiwan stuff, and I had
heard somewhere that there was cheap stuff with that casting into the
head. These bolts don't feel right when they take torque. Too
stretchy. And the split ring washers smooshed out on a couple of bolts.
I am not liking the bolt quality.

So....

No diff cover on the rear diff these Saturday. Anyone want to take bets
on what I will break as I go up the hill?

Today my friend and I tried, yes tried,to install a lockright locker on his
88XJ.I have done this on my WJ and another WJ.The problem we ran into was
that the sheer pin than holds the pin in place would not come out. What
happend is that the pin is flush and we could not take it out.We tried
using an easy out, drilling the badboy out to no avail. On my WJ all i had to
do was use a 1/4 12 point wrench to get it out but on his XJ it has that
damn sheer pin in there. Are they suppose to be flush like that or maybe
someone put one in there that was to small and said the hell with it and let
someone else deal with it.So how would we go about removing it.We even
called a dealership tech and asked them and they looked it up and said that
it must come out,no ****.At first i thought it was a a allen wrench but
nope.So any good ideas out there.

Kent....one could certainly get some bad (read cheap) hardware. For
what it is worth, I've always gotten my Grade 8 hardware at the local
ACE hardware. I can't vouch for the where it was made, but I've not had
any go south on me yet. My last suspension was held together with nuts
and bolts from ACE. :)

Here's one for you...."ACE is hands down, the best hardware store in
town" LOL

Stu

p.s. Don't chuckle to much about wanting a tab on your gas tank. I got
an e-mail the other day from a Jeeper who had performed one of the
modifications that is written up on my web site. He successfully melted
his gas tank while doing so. (he asked me to put an extra warning on
the web site about this. I already had one warning in the write-up that
addressed the difficulty of the modification.) ;>)

might have to pull the carrier... It makes it much easier. I used this
method with my '89 YJ D35.

do, nothing to worry about....."

I am truly sorry Kent.

I know there is always talk about misting systems for the
Jeeps...well tonight I installed one in my TJ to test out and show
off at CK this week end for "MobileMist.com". After a quick install I
took the Jeep for a ride and so far Im VERY impressed with it, I was
not expecting to notice it much...wrong. We will see how it does at
CK this weekend and for anyone wanting to check it out look for my
rig Sat. This is as close as Ill get to having my A/C back :)
