Hello All,
New to the list. I was trying to update my members area information and noticed that a lot of you have your Jeep pictured next to your name and vehicle. Will someone please tell me how to do this. Oh, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Justin Pitcairn and I just picked up my third Jeep, a 2003 Wrangler Rubicon. Check the members board for all the modifications so far and a few pictures of it on Trail 42. I am look forward to meeting some of you on the up coming Crown King Run.

Thanks Again

Subject: CJ Wheel Bearing Question

How are CJ front axle wheel bearings retained?

I've got CJ hubs and bearings on a utility trailer and they keep
getting loose. I think I don't have all the parts to keep them
adjusted correctly.

These are setup with these parts in this order from inside to
outside:

outer bearing/adjusting nut/washer with tab on inside/outer nut

This doesn't seem quite right to me. I think is should be:

outer bearing/tabbed washer/inner nut/lock washer/outer nut.

Can anyone confirm this?

Is the lock washer is just an oversize washer with a tab on the
inside? Oversized so it can be bent over the outer nut?

Does anyone know if these parts are available in the east valley? Or
do I need to get them via mail order? How about a socket for the big
nuts? The generic parts stores (checker/autozone) don't have anything
that big and neither does Sears.

tnx

Joe Larkin

Joe,

You are correct. There should be a thicker, tabbed washer in between
the inner nut and the bearing. The fold-over lock washer is
specifically designed for this purpose, and is much thinner than a
standard washer. It's tabbed as well. I would try 4-wheelers for the
washers, nuts, and the socket. I haven't had to buy any of these since
I moved here, but my old jeep parts store back home had all these,
including the spindle nut socket, so I know they make 'em.

For what it is worth, I tried the Network Alignment at 67th Ave. and
Bethany.

I WAS TOTALLY NOT IMPRESSED!!!!!!!

They wanted over $100 for a front end alignment because they would have to
adjust my "custom" suspension (which at that time was some RE short arms).
This was back when I was a newbie so I paid them the money and found that
they screwed up the front pinion angle because they didn't have a clue about
caster vs. pinion for a lifted Jeep.

I drove it home, adjusted the front control arms myself, and was able to
obtain a ride where the front u-joint wasn't rattling my teeth out. Since
then, I've not paid anyone to align my Jeep....a few hours with the FSM and
some trial and error in my garage (such as putting on the Currie steering)
and I can now do my own caster and toe.

Maybe I just had an idiot for alignment tech at that shop, but I've never
spent any more time or money with them. Given the savvy alignment folks
that are in AZVJC that do it for a living, I couldn't see going to a generic
alignment shop to have your modified Jeep aligned.

I had a similar experience with them. I went in for an alignment. Well they adjusted the toe and that was it. Then charged me $60.00. So basically when my jeep pulled, the steeting was straight! Pissed me off!!!

When I say I liked my service at the Big O on Bell (west Valley) remember, I had already adjusted my "custom" Teraflex arms to get my caster angle back, per Stu's suggestion. (you smart!).
ALWAYS learn as much as you can before allowing some stranger to handle the private parts of your beloved Jeep!
When they came back and told me they couldn't adjust whatever, cause there were no cam bolts (not since 99 Tj's) I already knew I was ok, just do the toe in please.

I bought two really large spindle nut sockets from Jay's Auto Parts
(Main, east of Dobson). They had them in stock.

Surprisingly, Darner can get old Dana axle parts and old Dodge truck
parts, but not u-joints for closed knuckle D70s. I have also had good
luck with Reith Auto Parts (CarQuest).

A friend took his YJ into the Jeep dealer for service. He was told
that his steering knuckles are starting to wear. He asked if they
meant the ball joints and they said they meant the knuckles.
I didn't think the knuckles themselves encountered any wear.
Anyone have an idea what the dealer is talking about?

Again this is a YJ with Dana 30 front end and those have the
non-serviceable bearing hub assembly that attaches with 3
bolts from the back side of the knuckle.

I guess the ball joint connection points could wallow out or the tie rod
hole could do the same. But I would have to see it before I would believe
the dealer and know it was my knuckle they were showing me. I highly doubt
the knuckle is shot! I have seen them break but never a worn out one. Jim F.

Also for an FYI, the outer knuckles are the same from a YJ to a TJ.
Look in junk yards for them, but they are not too cheap. About $100
a pair, unless you find someone you know that will give you a deal.
I "think" 4 Wheelers has some, but have him call Barry.

I've got the spindle nut socket (2- 1/16" bearing locknut socket) if you'd
like to borrow it (I'm in Chandler - Elliot and Alma School). I bought mine
from Four Wheel Drive Hardware for $9.95 with free shipping. Here is a link
if you want to buy it from them:

I had to have one also for my M416 trailer which uses the old CJ hubs as
well.

end up after the shackle reversal. Todd (the FSJ friend making the
parts says 6-7" of lift plus I gain additional height with the Revolvers
over the stock shackle). Maybe just getting the rear installed and then
going to a spring shop and having them make a custom spring for the
front to bring it up to height keeping in mind the front revolvers and
the 10,500 winch, tow bar, etc would be the smart move. Anyone need a
set of 4" lift Full SIze Jeep Springs?

I'm going to broadcast this e-mail to the club also. It looks like
re-arching the springs is a bad idea so that is out but on another note,
the following:

In doing the wiring for the Mobi-Arc (Thanks again Brad) it became
apparent I would need to shorten the #4 cables for the Alternator,
Ground and Battery. Not one to do things Half-***** I purchased a crimper
for the larger size cables up to #2. Not being a very cheap tool I
would like to see it put to use so anyone who is shortening or
replacing/relocating cables for their battery(s) or winch, give me a
buzz and you can borrow the crimpers and save yourself over $200 or the
headache of having someone else do it and do the job right.

It was a CJ7 and it seemed like a good deal last night. I went back
this morning to pick it up and give it a second going over. I didn't
sleep well over the deal so I took it for a second test drive. After
the test drive I still felt uncertain about this particular Jeep. It
had an injected straight six but I was really thinking a V8 was more
what I wanted. Until I buy another house in Montana (which may be a
year or more) and can do motor and axle swaps I just didn't think I
could live with the straight six and 2.73 gears.

So I'm continuing the search. I got so excited last night. There
absolutely will be another Jeep. Whether its an XJ, Willys, or CJ I
don't know. Leaning towards an XJ at the moment. It would be a great
Moab rig.

Yeah, after we drove around and looked at 5 or 6 jeeps guess what
Scott discovered? You can't buy a perfect jeep for 3 grand. big
surprise eh Scott ? Personally I think that Xj was a pretty good
deal ... :P

How about the slides where the brake pads ride. Mine were very worn on a
previous set of knuckles. The slides were very grooved and the brakes were
acting funny. I actually replaced the knuckles, but I believe you can buy a
kit to cover the slides.

Good luck. I have a pass. side knuckle I'd like to get rid of, If your
looking to replace his.

TIA,
Roger

If it has disk front brakes, the caliber sliders do wear and can wear a
lot.. Mine ('98 TJ) already have a rather deep grove worn in both sides. If
I were not doing a WJ knuckle swap soon, I'ld be looking for a new pair of
outer knuckles for the TJ.

Best,
Fred

Welcome Justin,

To add picture next to your name just add the picture to your gallery
then in your gallery you will be able to link the image to your Jeep.
I believe your picture should be under 100K in size.

Good luck.

Hello All,
New to the list. I was trying to update my members area information
and noticed that a lot of you have your Jeep pictured next to your name
and vehicle. Will someone please tell me how to do this. Oh, I guess I
should introduce myself. My name is Justin Pitcairn and I just picked
up my third Jeep, a 2003 Wrangler Rubicon. Check the members board for
all the modifications so far and a few pictures of it on Trail 42. I am
look forward to meeting some of you on the up coming Crown King Run.

Thanks Again
