This is it. Another year to make our way to Crown King. Come join the
camaraderie and adventure. Here is a chance to enjoy cool temps and
hospitality of Crown King. What better setting to see the faces of the
people behind the emails.

Sign up here to be counted then sign up for a run you can make (below).
Last year we had several runs starting at various times and locations.
There will be runs starting from Lake Pleasent, Turkey Creek, Senetor
Highway from Prescott or even the Crown King road.

6:00 AM Crown King from Lake Pleasant Early Bird Run Lead by Hackle

7:00 AM Crown King from Lake Pleasant Lead by Stu Olson

8:00 AM Crown King from Lake Pleasant Lead by Kent Warner

9:00 AM Crown King from Lake Pleasant Lead by Sharky

10:00 AM Lake Pleasant to Crown King Lead by Kevin's Carr

11:00 AM

1:30 PM Crown King from Lake Pleasant Lead by Leonard Pennock

7:00 AM Turkey Creek Lead by Joey K

If you are intrested in leading a run from a different location or time
post it.

I just wanted to send this message and I or someone else will
send it again before the trip. The trail times are when the group
leaves. If you sign up for my early bird run at 6:00 and show up at 6:05
you will be well behind the group and probably be aired down and ready
when Stu leaves at 7:00. We will have a lot of vehicles on the trail at
the same time and need to be on time to keep each group separate from
the others. Of course everyone wants to be well ahead of Sharky as we
all know how his trips to Crown King end up. BTW anyone that is an EMT
might want to think about joining Sharky's group:)
The Lake Pleasang to Crown King trail is a local favorite. On any given
weekend, there will be numerous groups of four wheelers, ATV's and
motorcycles heading to and from Crown King. It is a fun and scenic trail
into the cooler pines of the Bradshaws. This trail was the first trip ever done by
AzVJC.

The trail takes off from the Castle Hotsprings Rd and travels through
the foot hills and up the side of the mountain, giving nice views of
Lake Pleasant and the Valley. There are some tougher optional sections
that can make it interesting.

The trail goes through the old ghost towns of Fort Misery and Oro Belle,
both of which are remnants of the Mining era of the Bradshaw Mountains.
All that remains now, are foundations and a few crumbling walls. Fort
Misery makes a nice place to stop and eat lunch as the small creek
usually has running water and there are trees to provide shade.

In the winter months, the trail from Fort Misery through Oro Belle to
Crown King will often have snow and/or ice. In the summer, an early
start is necessary to stay ahead of the rising temperatures.

Once on top of the mountain, the trail runs through the cool pines and
into Crown King. In Crown King there are places to eat and have a drink,
and a general store that sells some excellent fudge. The old Crown King
Saloon was actually built in Oro Belle, and later hauled up (many years
ago) to Crown King and rebuilt. In Oro Belle, the saloon was built into
the side of the hill, so the upstairs were mainly accessable from the
rear of the building (at ground level). The upstairs served as a place
repose for women of ill fame.

There are campgrounds on top of the mountain near Crown King for those
wishing to stay overnight. The fastest way down is via the main road
which leads through Cleator and toward Bumble Bee. You can split off and
go through Cordes Junction, which will get you to the Freeway quicker,
or keep going strait and go through the little town of Bumble Bee.

Alternatively, you can take the Senator Highway toward Prescott or
Mayer, this can be a very interesting trail during snow season. If you
have the time, follow Towers Mountain rd through Crown King and up to
the top of Towers Mountain, there are some excellent views and you can
join back up with the Senator Highway afterward.

Have fun, remember to bring water and your camera.

Enjoy, and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Hey Rio, with my front 60 abomination (ford housing with chevy

krawlers I am at 83.5" outside of tire to outside of tire, I
absolutely love this width, so far I havent ever wished I was stock
width again, I can still fit up Anaconda, etc.. with no problem. Plus
I can sidehill like mad now too : ) Just ask Rick Norman, his XJ
doesnt sidehill quite as good as my jeep :p

Also I can still fit on a normal size trailer, the only downfall is
because of the backspacing my hubs stick out and are taking quite a
beating, they still work though : )

Oh and Id do a search over on the pirate board www.pirate4x4.com for

Hello All,
Steve Olney lead a trail run Saturday, August 2, 2003 across Coves of Saguaro Lake

2 TJ's and a CJ

Although we did not reach sandy beach, the trip will still loads of fun. While the first 3 miles were quite easy (one of the TJ's with 31's did manage to get stuck of a rock and had to be pulled off) the trail got nasty real quick when the valley narrowed. Although we decided the trail was impassable without major body damage, I (CJ7 4" lift,33s,f+r lockers) decided to try first waterfall.

It was not that bad going "down", but because the other Jeeps would be out of pulling range, I had to do a 27 point turn to turn around. After about 30 minutes of jacking, stacking, smashed muffler, broken shackle, we were able to get the Jeep back through the sluce.

With bigger tires, lift, good backup, winch , NO worry about body damage this looks like a really fun trail (can't wait to get next Jeep finished). Upon return, I was told that Randy Ellis (rock crawler master) had completed the trail and said it was one of the most changeling he had done

Just curious, why are you not running a stabalizer?

I ask because it was my understanding that the stabalizer was added to
help with driver fatigue especailly over not so smooth roads. I don't
think it to be a big issue. Just remember to drive with your thumbs out.

Joey K;

I also drive without a stabilizer on the '78 Cherokee. Doesn't need it.
Fatigue is not an issue nor is excessive feedback/kickback thorugh the
steering wheel. I have changed the orginal "no feel" steering box to a
later model Saginaw that give me a better feeling of what is happining
with my tires and the road but it has no problem getting over the rocks
and ruts without spinning the wheel out of my hand. I don't drive with
a "Death Grip", as I have seen may do, that would contribute to river
fatigue.

Basically, a well set up steering system with proper geometry doesn't
need a steering stabilizer, much less the 4 or more of them I have seen
on some rigs.

A couple of friends and I left the meeting spot at 6:15am to do a
quick Jeep run up towards Crossman Peak in Havasu this morning to
find the wreckage of a WWII war plane that crashed back in the late
40's up there past the "waterfall". I have been up that way many
times, but never took the side trip to find this area. Today, we
found it. We had to hike up the mountain for about 50 yards, and it
was. Unfortunately, all that was left of it was one of the engines
and a relatively small piece of the aluminum shrouding from it. I saw
on a Geocaching website that the other engine is on the other side of
that peak. What was surprising about what we found was the fact that
zeus fasteners were used in its construction.

My wife had to be to work at 10am, so we turned back. The jeep trail
continued further and I/we intend to do another trip up there when it
cools down and we have no time restraints.

I would have to agree with Chris. I had the same problem and posted
it, Stu mentioned the same masking. I did install a better, heavy
duty steering stabilizer and it seemed to work great. But after
thinking about it, I decided to take it in. It ended up being the
tow (toe) sp? line of the front tires. They were off by 1/2 inch.
As you can see I am not a mechanic. Anyway this completely took
care of my death wobble.

My 2 cents worth,

That is pretty cool.....never came across something like that (always
old mining equipment, homesteads, etc.) Thanks for sharing!

Subject: Cleaning out the garage-3 engines & 1 tranny for sale

Hey everyone,
I've gotta clear out the garage to make room & money for new
projects.
I have a '69 Buick 400BB and matching TH400 Tranny-everything is
present with matching numbers right down to the carb except for the
flywheel. The engine needs a ring and gasket job. The tranny was
running great when I pulled it. I'd like to get $700obo for the pair.
Next, I need to get rid of a bare chevy 350 block and matching
crankshaft. Has an Edelbrock intake manifold on it. $150obo
Last but not least, I have a '73 240Z motor. Its set up for dual
carbs, but it has been sitting for a while, so it probably needs
freshening up. Everything is there but the carbs. $350obo
Hopefully, somebody has a use for one of these. Give me a call if
interested.

Dan,

Zeus fasteners are still in use on today's aircraft both large and small. Cool find.
