I'd recommend a trailer if you have access to one or if cost isn't an
issue. You'll be much more comfortable (and safer) towing with an extra
set of brakes to help stop you. For me, cost is an issue, so I flat
tow. Unlock the front hubs and remove the rear driveshaft. The 10
minutes it takes to remove the drive shaft is well worth the peace of
mind knowing that there's no way you can do damage to the transmission
or transfer case....

My first mechanics job, first day on the job, first car I ever touched... I
burned up an entire wiring harness in a new car (back in 79) because I
forgot to disconnect the battery. I watched the harness burn like a fuse...
and total the car. It was kinda cool when it went through the firewall
because the inside of the car filled with smoke... it looked neat!
I was standing there mesmerized watching the harness sizzle it's way from
the alternator up to the firewall and then into the car.

It was I am sad to admit, the first job I was ever fired from :D I was
really glad I wasn't around when they explained to the owner why their car
was worthless.... needless to say; I learned the hard way.

[az_vjc] JP magazine.....

All,

At the risk of taking an unpopular stance... I don't believe it should
matter whether or not people to choose to drive their Jeeps only on the
street. Who cares if a Rubicon owner chooses to only drive their Rubicon on
asphalt? Who cares if they baby their Jeep and keep it polished, waxed, and
absolutely perfect?

Owning a Jeep isn't about trying to keep up with the "real" Jeep owners
("real" is usually defined by the writer as however they themselves use
their Jeep), but is rather, doing whatever you want to do with your Jeep...
independent of what anyone else thinks.

Rock crawlers might define "real" Jeep owners as those Jeepers who bash the
hell out of their rigs and don't care about any damage.

Campers might define "real" Jeep owners as those Jeepers who take their rig
offroad for camping and actually use 4wd some of the time.

Street Jeepers might define "real" as keeping their Jeeps totally stock and
in perfect factory condition and not subjecting it to any abuse at all.

The bottom line is; who cares how people use their Jeep? There is a
systemic attitude among some in our group that "If you don't Jeep like I do"
you aren't a real Jeeper. What a crock!

Here's what defines a real Jeeper:

If you own and drive a Jeep, you are a real Jeeper.

It doesn't matter if you built it, bought it, built and bought it, or
friggen stole the damn Jeep.

For those of you who never take your Jeep offroad... more power to you!
Don't let those in our group who whine about how you choose to use your rig
make you feel like you don't belong.

The permits can only be sold from the State Land Dept. in Phoenix, Tucson
and Flagstaff or from the Public Lands Information Center in downtown
Phoenix.

Hopefully they will be available via the internet (as Joe states) by the end
of the summer but I wouldn't hold my breath on it. I'm thinking probably
closer to the first of the year.

Removing the negative battery cable has the same affect... If it makes
you feel better you can pull the whole battery, but make sure the
negative cable comes off first, to prevent any possible welding action
with the wrench...

I have a WARN full floater kit in my rear so I have the luxury of
unlocking both front and back hubs.

A trailer is optimal, providing your tow rig is heavy enough and
powerful enough and has proper hookups to activate the trailer
brakes.

If you do flat tow, Darren's advice is the best option. Don't forget
when flat towing it's very difficult to backup more than a few feet
before you jack-knife so plan your parking/stops accordingly.

I was wondering for those that went full width... does it have any
major disadvantages on some of the narrow trails, or can you take any
trails that you took before simply by taking different lines. What
is your width on the outside of the tires? I think I am going to end
up with 82".

I'm also considering converting the D60 rear to 5x5.5. It's a 1970
ford F/F D60 with 8lug. How is this done?

Thanks...

Rio
I'm at 81 inches & it's a world of difference coming from a stock
width CJ. It makes for much more interesting (better) wheeling. In
some cases like the 1st squeeze on Predator it makes the obsticals
more fun by having to go up & straddle the crack. However, I've put
my Jeep on its side in a squeeze on upper Ajax that was too wide to
straddle & wound up being too high to climb one wall. In my stock
width CJ I used to just drive through & up the middle.
But, in tippy situations(white line) or sideways climbing while
turning, you can't beat the stability of the full width.

Joe,
All these areas are small urban areas that are being trashed by the "after
school crowd with ATV and bikes"...... Maricopa County and soon to be
Pinal, are being held tight to the PM-10 Air Quality ratings. Hopefully
riding areas such as the new Desert Wells area just east of Apache Junction
will help with the dust problems in the urban areas. The area just east of
Maricopa County line is the M.P. 201 area in Gold Canyon. 32,000 acres were
closed to OHV but we mapped and signed 86,000 with 200 miles of trails just
east of this area ............... Desert Wells Multi-Use Area. The area
along Ironwood Rd and Hwy 60 at the M.P. 201 was being outright devastated
by OHV......... again, mostly ATV's and Bikes but they were destroying the
ranchers tanks (using the banks as jumps) and the CAP that runs parallel
with Ironwood Rd looks like a moonscape. Several riders have been killed in
the past couple of years trying to jump the canal. The drug and rave
parties had become massive. Air Quality Control wanted ALL closed but with
"sitting at the table" with the ranchers, AQC, County of Pinal, Game & Fish,
ASLD, OHV Recreationists and Hunters, we developed Desert Wells...........
There are three kiosks...... one off Hwy 60, one off Hwy 79 and one on the
southwest corner off Skyline Drive. There are 11 gates, all are signed and
have maps on the signs. The kiosks will have maps posted as well as maps
for individual use. I believe the maps are being printed now and should be
out soon. The trails have all been signed but we still have to go back out
and put the "numbers" on the trail signs. Numbers are on order and it's
simply too hot for me right now. All should be finished within the next 30
days or so. A similar project has been done at the Pima and Dynamite area
in conjunction with the preserve. This all came about from all of you that
showed at the meeting in RED about 2 years ago.................

If the OHV Trail riders and rock crawlers don't start paying attention to
the resource impact being done on trails by vehicles that are not capable or
inexperienced drivers we'll be looking at the same type closures.

I'm hopeing this workshop on the 23-24 will get us "on the road" to positive
OHV in the state.

I agree, if possible the trailer is awesome. If not, definitely remove the
rear drive shaft. The only other problems that I have seen are 1) will the
front tires track properly? I have seen setups that just don't want to
steer well when being flat towed. 2) If you run a low ring & pinion gear,
and put smaller tires on to tow with you can burn up the R&P. I've seen it
done.

Other than that, it should not be a huge problem, just be careful with the
speed going down hill. :)

I guess that means I still get to go on the CK run. I will have my
girlfriends be prepared just in case. :-)

You could have got lucky and have a D44 in the rear. Otherwise, its a 35 c
clip. The 8.25 rear ends didnt start until later I believe.

RE, Rustys, Rockkrawler, and several others make LA kits for the XJ.

You should check out the xj group. Lots of good XJ knowledge there and its a
good bunch of people.

A few other things to consider...

If you have a locking steering column, you'll need a key in the
ignition and the ignition switch turned to unlock the steering
column to allow your front tires to track/turn. I usually remove the
positive battery cable to avoid draining the battery while the
ignition switch is engaged (old CJ - newer modles may not pull
juice). Also, in "better safe than sorry" mode, I'll also zip tie
the ignition key to prevent any possiblity that it somehow gets
turned off and locks the column while rolling down the road.

Also, if going long distances, I'll drop my windshield to reduce
unnecessary drag. Then I use magnetic tail lights stuck to the rear
bumper with the cable running through the Jeep and over the hood.
