i was just wondering if the 'goo' in pic one is what is causing the clunking in the Jeep when i turn, it is the drivers side. pic two is the passenger side
and if it is causing the clunk, is it relatively easy to fix, or should i pay a shop?
also, in pic three is the rust going to be an issue, and if so can i paint over it, to sort of 'seal' it?

I'm in one of those "fixing everything I've broken over the past two
years" modes. :(
It's been about 4 months since I did a run... and quite frankly, I
needed the break.
I've learned that building a Jeep so that it can do almost anything
means that you have to do some pretty extreme stuff to get the same
thrill you once did in a stock Jeep. Doing the more extreme stuff means
that when you break, you REALLY break.
Besides... I've been at this for 5 years and my Jeep told me it needed a
break. With the new car... I'm happy to oblige it right now.

BTW the Rubi may give you a head start but as most of you

One of the mechanics in the group could probably chime in with a better
answer, but It looks like they just went a little crazy over at the mighty
lube when you got your oil changed. There isnt any way to tell from the
picture if your ball joint is bad though. The clunk you talked about could
be a U-joint which is more common. Id start by just checking that everything
in the front end is tight. If so, you can get an idea of ujoint movement by
putting the rig in park and pushing the vehicle backward and forward (by
hand) and watch the joint-(a busted ujoint cap or such will have show play
when you do this).

Subject: Rubicon
I am probably going to catch hell over this anyway but I think it makes
sense. I read JP, 4wheeler and a few other off-road mags and I remember
very distinctively many, many people asking for more vehicle
manufacturer to make better trail worthy vehicles that came right out of
the box. THE ONLY PEOPLE to listen to anyone was Chrysler, the Rubicon,
now I agree the Tomb Raider version is pretty much garbage, not to
mention a waste of money however the original Rubicon concept was an
excellent idea. The biggest part was that Jeep Listened! A lot of people
wanted a vehicle that could do more from the start and they gave it to
us and now everyone is jumping on the band wagon because the Rubicon was
successful and yes I am sure yuppies drive them as well because they
want to look good. I don't own a Rubicon I own a TJ but look at it from
this standpoint. I don't have a lot of extra cash lying around so if I
can buy a jeep with most of the mods I really want already on them and
finance them into the loan then fine by me. The funniest part is how all
these Magazines gave Chrysler such praise for listening to the public
and producing something of this caliber made for the trails, The only
one to listen to the public and now we are going to send a bunch of crap
their way because we all worked so hard on our jeeps we currently own
and how dare they offer something as great as the Rubicon, ask yourself
this if all of our jeeps magically bursed into flames and you had to buy
a new jeep with the insurance money you wouldn't even think about a
Rubicon? This is just my 2 cents and by no means am I trying to flame
anyone I just think people are mad at Chrysler about the Rubicon because
yuppies own them and because everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, kind
of like when Dallas won those super bowls couldn't go anywhere without
seeing someone with a Dallas hat, and hell some of those people prolly
don't even know where Dallas is :-)

Okay, I need to add my .50 cents, because I am one of those jeepers
that needs help.
I understand all of the arguments you guys have made and (believe it
or not) I have had frustrations with being on a trail with another
jeeper that is not fit for the trail. In fact I have seen jeep and
driver that were not fit for the trail as well as the driver not
being fit no matter how well set up the jeep was.
I am no mechanic and do not know how to fix everything on my jeep. I
am slowly learning. I maintain it as best I can and if in doubt
about anything will stay at home. However, things do happen on the
trail and some things break without warning (hard trail or not) and
if this happens to me I will probably need help. Now, I do not like
people working on my jeep without my help (as some can vouch for) and
much prefer them to tell me what to do and they sit on the sidelines
and supervise. So does this mean I should only go on trails rated at
2 or below?? I certainly hope not. My jeep is capable of a lot and
probably more than I am at this point but I am mindful of that and
will make sure I talk with the troop leader to make sure.
So, my point is this: Because I don't know how to fix or
troubleshoot everything on my jeep and do not have every spare part
possible, does that mean I can't participate, given what I have
shared above?
I am not trying to argue so much as get everyones opinion since I
have a slightly different spin/point of view. I have asked this
question of many people I have wheeled with but would like to know
the general concensus on this.

By cranks really slow 4 or 5 times then turns over fine do you
mean it begins cranking normally or cranks slow a few times
then just starts? If it cranks slow then just starts my first guess
would be the starter is dragging (armature contacting the
windings on the motor housing). There's a couple of ways to
check.
The easiest would be to check the current draw of the starter
while cranking.
Another way would be to (obviously) try a battery that's known to
be good or have your current battery load tested while it's hot to
make sure it's OK. Then while cranking check the voltage at the
battery posts and at the starter (on the terminal bolt, not the
cable). If the voltage is nearly the same at both points while
cranking (with a good batt) then it's probably the starter. If the
voltage is significantly lower at the starter you need to check the
battery cables and connections as there is too much resistance
somewhere. There's probably a better way to check but that's
what has worked for me.
Good luck

I forgot to say that for the current draw test you still have to have a
good battery. The lower the voltage falls the more amperage the
starter will try to draw. With a good starter and battery the voltage
shouldn't go below around 11 volts while cranking for 15
seconds. If I remember correctly 10.5 volts after 15 seconds is
getting very borderline.

Same here on the car thing. My new Mini Cooper sure is fun.
Plus, I'm redoing the shop. Then the Jeep goes in for rear disks, rear
lower shock mount, new air cleaner housing, hood vents, some OBA
updates, more air holding capacity, new front lower control arms, etc.

My first guess would be corroded connections or a bad battery. Turn
your headlights on and honk your horn (engine off). You'll know pretty
quickly if it is the battery.

I'm happy to oblige it right now.

picture if your ball joint is bad though.

I have asked this
question of many people I have wheeled with but would like to know
the general concensus on this.

p.s. I am however prepared with the thong if the need arises and all

With a good starter and battery the voltage
shouldn't go below around 11 volts while cranking for 15
seconds. If I remember correctly 10.5 volts after 15 seconds is
getting very borderline.

updates, more air holding capacity, new front lower control arms, etc.

Subject: RE: Problem hot starting
My first guess would be corroded connections or a bad battery. Turn
your headlights on and honk your horn (engine off). You'll know pretty
quickly if it is the battery.
