In general, I agree. It's more of a spiritual thing. If you enjoy it, on road or off, stock or custom, congratulations! You're a jeeper!

All,

At the risk of taking an unpopular stance... I don't believe it should
matter whether or not people to choose to drive their Jeeps only on the
street. Who cares if a Rubicon owner chooses to only drive their Rubicon on
asphalt? Who cares if they baby their Jeep and keep it polished, waxed, and
absolutely perfect?

Owning a Jeep isn't about trying to keep up with the "real" Jeep owners
("real" is usually defined by the writer as however they themselves use
their Jeep), but is rather, doing whatever you want to do with your Jeep...
independent of what anyone else thinks.

Rock crawlers might define "real" Jeep owners as those Jeepers who bash the
hell out of their rigs and don't care about any damage.

Campers might define "real" Jeep owners as those Jeepers who take their rig
offroad for camping and actually use 4wd some of the time.

Street Jeepers might define "real" as keeping their Jeeps totally stock and
in perfect factory condition and not subjecting it to any abuse at all.

The bottom line is; who cares how people use their Jeep? There is a
systemic attitude among some in our group that "If you don't Jeep like I do"
you aren't a real Jeeper. What a crock!

Here's what defines a real Jeeper:

If you own and drive a Jeep, you are a real Jeeper.

It doesn't matter if you built it, bought it, built and bought it, or
friggen stole the damn Jeep.

For those of you who never take your Jeep offroad... more power to you!
Don't let those in our group who whine about how you choose to use your rig
make you feel like you don't belong.

Joe West

Depending on the particular Jeep, you could have some
less-than-desirable components on your 87. The 5spd trannies were the
Peugot BA-10(?), the t-case could be an NP-207, it's got the carb on the
4.2L, and it was first year production of YJ's.

On the good side, the D35 was non c-clipped.

Of those things, only the 207 was an 87 only thing...and I don't think
it was a 100% deal either. I don't even know what makes the 207 any
different from a 231. I swear I have a 231 in mine, although ½ the
t-case was replaced and now there is no tag. I have the TF-999 auto, so
no weak tranny. I sometimes need to buy parts from CJ's, as opposed to
what the books/computers say my YJ is supposed to have!

I just figure the 87 is special and allows me to be "cool" with the old
school CJ guys as well as the new YJ guys. Won't even try to fit in
with the TJ crew...they have funny round things that resemble serpents
holding up their Jeeps! ;-)

XJ's have a little YJ in them (square headlights and rear leafs), but a
little TJ (front end is identical). So we dont fit in anywhere :)

3/8" hose is pretty standard but if you are using it directly off the
York outlet you will want a very high temp tolerable one. I am using a
few feet of hydraulic hose but the hose that semi's use for air breaks
works well too. You can find both at NAPA.

You may also want an outlet filter as well. Any will work provided you
keep it far enough away from the York's outlet heat.

You will also want to install a fuse (5 amp?) just to be safe. Also be
sure to have this switched with the key. I can't tell you how much blood
and sweat I have put in to fixing the Jeep's electrical system because
the battery was drained.

Got the York installed and working. Now I need to plumb everything.
From my research I think I have a full shopping list but feel free to
chime in with whatever I leave off.

Inlet filter (any ideas for this one?)
Pressure switch/regulator
Check valve
pressure guage
tank
Popoff valve
In cab master switch
hose
manifold

I'm guessing I can get some of this stuff at Harbor Freight. Any idea
of a good quailty/price tank? Also, what would you recommend for hose
size? I'm trying to get this finished up this weekend so I don't have
to "borrow" air on the CK run. Anyone with advice or an extra set of
hand is welcome to come by this weekend.

Thanks,
Phil

Very good idea Joey. In the ZJ, we used auto A/C compressor hose
since it can handle the pressure and the heat. We got a set off a
salvaged XJ. It added a little to the overall cost.

Hello All,
Brad Rogers lead a trail run Saturday, August 2, 2003 across Crown King from Lake Pleasant

Unfortuntely I didn't meet up with Bill and Patrick until the end at Crown King. We all had a good time though. The beer was cold and the stories made up for the long trip. Good time, everyone should run this trail in a Jeep. One guy in particular wasn't so lucky. A 2500 Dodge pickup had rolled off an obstacle and into the canyon. Nice truck, keys still in it and she starts up. Good luck pulling it out of the ravine.
Good time....
3/8" strap will get you whatever size shackles you need! Don't forget you
will get some settleing if those springs are new.

Whew, thank goodness Woman's Day wasn't on there. :-)

But seriously, despite poor taste sometimes and articles that seem to serve
advertisers, they do have some neat articles. I also like to see new
products coming down the pike. And heck, it's only like $1.25 or so an issue
when you subscribe.

Yeah, no prob. All I'm saying is that you can get all of those things
you mentioned in any YJ from 87 thru 90.

I THINK the only thing not offered any other year (and not even thru
all of 87) is the NP207 T-Case.

I had my clutch and throw out bearing done at 4 Wheelers Supply. I'd
recommend that he change the bearing too when he does it. Anyway,
they did mine about 3 years ago and no problem since. I have a
Centerforce clutch with stock trans and a 360.

Hi Joe,

Well golly darnit! I think we just might agree on something.

Lockers and 37's is not what makes a real Jeep. It's what is in your
heart. It's that irresistable urge when you walk away from your Jeep
to look back to make sure its okay. Its tucking your Jeep in at
night (pushing the garage door button, watch the door close, give it
a last look before turning off the garage light and going inside).

I've had a YJ and a TJ. I've done what I would consider some hard
rock trails over the past 8 years. Now I've moved on to something
new and different.

My next Jeep (yes, there is one in the works I will post an update
in the near future) will no doubt be purchased and built with a
different purpose in mind. It's been really exciting searching for
this next Jeep. (I'm going to go look at another possibility here in
the next hour).

Anyway, as long as it has a "Jeep" stamp, emblem, or decal on it
then it's a Jeep! (Or Willys :)

Later,

Scott K

(Still temporarily Jeepless)
