Wouldn't removing the venturi be similar to switching over to one of
those K&N cone filter setups? I would think you'd notice a some
difference -- on a stock vehicle.

Scott,
When you put the AW4 in your TJ, did you lose much driveshaft length?
I just read an article about making that swap and one of the reasons
why Jeep didn't put an auto tranny w/OD in the SWBs was because of the
length, but the article didn't get into any measurements.

I have no idea how to put in gears or a locker. And I have a 9" and a
D30 to build. Anyone know where I can get a "Dummies Guide to Gear
Instalation" manual from? Or is anyone up for a fun filled Sat? I'm
on government salary and can't afford to pay a shop to do the work
for me. I've been quoted anywhere from $800 and up just for labor!
I'd like to learn as much as I can about axles as I can other than
they somehow make the wheels spin. More than anything I'd like to
have someone there to advise and be the infamous third hand when
needed. The 9" is sitting in the grage, itchin' for the 410's and
detroit and the D30 is still on my Jeep needing it's gear and quick
lock. My Jeep is my daily driver so I'd need this done in a weekend,
if possible.
I'm willing to learn and want to get back to wheelin' "Mistress" has
seen WAY TOO MUCH asphalt lately. And the recent rains she's got that
look in her eye!!!! ;)
Thanx in advance for your help!

Subject: Fwd: Cutting Through Smoke on Healthy Forests Bill
News From the Committee on Resources
For Immediate Release
July 28, 2003
Cutting Through Smoke on Healthy Forests Bill
Washington, DC - Opponents of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act
have consistently hung the basis of their objections on the
Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) forest thinning provision.
These opponents, including radical environmental fundraising
organizations, claim that a 200-yard to half-mile thinning radius
(WUI) around communities would suffice to protect homes and families
from catastrophic wildfire. Many of these groups demagogue the issue
of forest maintenance as unnecessary and a boon to big business.
Here's why these claims are dangerously disingenuous and
environmentally confused:
I. Catastrophic Forest Fires can jump over miles of land and ignite new
fires.
It's called "spotting" and it is part of what makes catastrophic
forest fires so dangerous. Walls of flame stretch across miles of
forest and reach 400 feet into the sky, shooting fireballs into
furious winds.
Last year, Colorado's Coal Seam fire jumped the Colorado River, a
multi- tiered stretch of Interstate 70, and a railroad track -- all
in one fiery leap. With winds reaching 60 mph, Colorado's Hayman
Fire raced one-half mile in just four minutes 17 miles in one day.
This year, The Aspen Fire in Arizona raced out of the Pusch Ridge
Wilderness into the town of Summerhaven. The small-scale treatments
in close proximity to town, like those embraced by radical
environmental groups, were no match for the fire after it had built
up a head of steam and roared out of the wilderness. 250 homes and
businesses were destroyed in less than an hour.
Massive infernos in remote areas eventually reach urban areas. If
your home were in Summerhaven, would one-half mile suffice for you?
II. Catastrophic Forest Fires devastate the environment, regardless of
radius.
At 2000 degrees or more, forest infernos turn fertile soils into
glass, pump dangerous particulates into the air, and contaminate
drinking water. In recent years, they have also destroyed millions
of acres of wildlife and endangered species habitat.
Studies show that last summer's 137,000 acre Hayman Fire pumped more
carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere than did all of the cars, trucks
and SUV's in the State of Colorado combined during the same year.
And, eight endangered species may completely disappear from the area
because of the massive habitat loss.
Last summer's Rodeo-Chediski Fire destroyed over 100,000 acres of the
endangered Mexican Spotted Owl habitat, as well as an enormous number
of nesting sites for this imperiled federal species.
Are these environmental disasters not worthy of prevention?
To protect America's communities from the devastation of catastrophic
forest fires, common sense dictates that we maintain more forestland,
not less.
To protect our environment from the devastating effects of
catastrophic forest fires, common sense dictates that we maintain
more fore forestland, not less.
A massive bipartisan majority in the House recognized these facts and
passed the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of 2003. It's time the
so-called environmental community recognized them too.

A fundamental law of public land access is:
Increased habitat designation for threatened and endangered species

Here is the situation: I first had oil being sucked up in to my air box
from the hose on top of the valve cover. The year xj 88 dose not
require a PVC or check valve for that year. I went ahead and and put a
check valve on the to the air box any way. Problem solved, so I
thought. Now I have oil spraying out of the dip stick tube and it is
quit a bit of oil. If I take the check valve of i get tons of oil in my
air box. If I leave it on, I get oil coming out the dip stick tube.
Please help me..

Subject: Re: HEPL!!!!! A DIMMIE WANTS TO NSTALL GEARS AND LOCKERS!!!!!!
1st... e-mail Randy Siade, he is a club member and would be the
cheapest price to install. If you can't afford $300 for him to do
the gears on both axles then WAIT until you can! You will not get
your gears done in one weekend doing it yourself at home. I did it
at a shop and had the "Gears Guy" watching me and telling me what to
do and double checking everything. I had no clue what to do when I
put all my new stuff on there and the guage said I had a backlash
of -15. He had to tell me to switch this shim to that side and blah
blah blah. Gears are HARD and will take a few times before you get
the hang of it. Next... I had setup bearrings so I could pull the
bearrings on and off to switch the shims.. if you dont have them you
will tear up your bearrings pressing them on and off. You'll end up
buying an extra set of bearrings for each axle, plus the guages and
tools to do the gears... you are getting close to $200 just to buy
all that crap. Factor in if you happen to accidently screw something
up (I trashed a D44 pinion gear and had to buy a new set add $150)
by the time you get done you spent more money then he will charge
you!! I don't mean to sound so pesemistic, but you can't "learn" how
to set up gears as you do it! I did it myself with a lot of help
from a pro and I will tell you it isn't easy at all! There were at
least 5 or 6 times I would have screwed my setup big time if I
hadn't had someone watching! That is why there are very few members
that have tried it on their own!!! -Rob

When you put the AW4 in your TJ, did you lose much driveshaft length?
I just read an article about making that swap and one of the reasons
why Jeep didn't put an auto tranny w/OD in the SWBs was because of the
length, but the article didn't get into any measurements.

-Rob

Well finished the first half of the rear shock relocation and j-arms..
Dan and I cut and welded in the Ford shock tower mounts today.
Again, many thanks to Dan for his help !!
I'll post some of the photos, and others, just the link, so we don't eat up
too much band width
Drivers side after every thing is removed and ready to start

Dan, cleaned up one of the shock towers, after it's been cut to length:

I've finished welding it:

great fun ;)

Here's a photo of part of the finished the weld:

A photo showing both sides.. The center is snotty, long story. Couldn't see
because of the sun reflection off the inside of my helmet, so I was welding
by the brail method ;)

Photo of the underside.. I welded this from the bottom, upside down..
Lot's 'o fun ;)

On the passenger side, Dan caught a glimpse of sunlight that didn't look
right.. Mmmmm, cracked UCA mount:

View of crack from the underside.. I welded it up..

Here I am welding in the drivers side:<br />

First part of welds are laid in, that the bottom part of the shock tower has
been pounded out to fit.. We made the bottom about 1/4"+ wider than the
top..

I'm welded the notch across the top part of the shock mount:

That is for the rear air shock controls. I can lift the rear two additional
inches, or control each side individually to force articulation and
stabilize an offcamber climb.

4 Wheelers Supply did my axles and did a nice job.
Toys by Troy just did my Advanced Adapters SYE
http://www.stu-offroad.com/preview/preview-00.jpg (among several days
worth of other work) and it came out great.
I couldn't make a personal recommendation that says hands down one is
better than all the rest, since I've only used two shops in the valley.
;>) I can say that both treated me well and I've had no problems with
any of the work they have done.
