Here is the situation: I first had oil being sucked up in to my air box from the hose on top of the valve cover. The year xj 88 dose not require a PVC or check valve for that year. I went ahead and and put a check valve on the to the air box any way. Problem solved, so I thought. Now I have oil spraying out of the dip stick tube and it is quit a bit of oil. If I take the check valve of i get tons of oil in my air box. If I leave it on, I get oil coming out the dip stick tube. Please help me..

Frank,

Check to make sure you haven't overfilled the crankcase AND that you
haven't installed the check valve backwards OR it isn't working
properly. Air should flow from the valve cover TO the airbox but not
the other way. I suspect what you've done is either installed a bad
check valve, or you've installed it backwards (most likely). Try
blowing through the check valve... the end which you can blow through
easily is the end which should be connected to the valve cover.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

I just got an email advertising this gizmo and it seems interesting. I'm fine changing oil the old fashioned way but I'm wondering if there is a downside to using an oil change pump like this:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=5518&BQ=jcw2&TID=190004371TL0703

Seems like a neat idea, though you'd still get dirty changing the oil filter. Comments?

That's backwards... the air needs to flow from the air box to the valve

Joe may even enlighten more on another possibility. Blow By (because of
airplanes)
Blowby occurrs when there is leakage by the pistons on the compression
stroke. This pressure enters the inside of the engine and the only way out
is through the valve cover. If you plug that it will seep out outer ways
(dipstick). On large deisels and old old vehicles they have a tube comimg
out the side of the engine to monitor blowby. On airplanes they have a oil
temp senser in their oil and an increase of temp indicates blowby. This
blowby caues engines to run hotter. One little fix is attach a container at
the end of the line coming out of the engine. Don't seal this connection but
have the bottle there to collect the blowby oil. I am working on this
problem right now myself. If this is the case another fix is to rebuild the
engine.

Ah yes... I believe that all positive crankcase pressure is caused by
blow by... but you bring up a good point... it may be so bad that the
PCV valve can't take care of all of it and there still is positive
pressure in the crankcase because of the excessive blow by. That would
have to one SERIOUSLY worn out motor <grin>

You have blow-by, the engine is tired. You could put a small filter on a hose coming from the valve cover like the older engines used to have, but it is illegal, so put it stock prior to emissions tests.
