The military doesn't really design the vehivces. The outside civilian
contractors design them and bring them to the military and try and sell
them the idea. We really didn't use the Hummers for off-roading and rock
climbing so much as we used them to stuff 4 giys in it and be able to
hold all our gear next to us incase we need it at a moments notice. They
are very spacious inside except for the seating accomidations.

Does anyone have a really good explanation as to why the military
designed
the Hummer so much wider than the original Willys jeep? I don't think
that
a Hummer or an H2 could make it all the way through the box canyon in
Florence.

Johnny joints are cheaper to rebuild than it is to replace hiem-
joints, but the johnny joint strength is reliant on the quality of
the welds on the control arms. I am sure Currie is not manually
welding the hoops for the johnny joints so none of this should be an
issue.

I was in Farmington a little while back and Harold Off of Off Again Off Road
was showing us some trails. He brought out a couple different rigs that he
competes in. He is running the J arms on one of those rigs. They worked
great! One of the biggest advantages they had was how steep they could be
mounted. Harold could clear obstacles that others had to slide on with
their links. He thought it worked as well his rig with the long arms in
most cases.

Subject: EZ Locker Install

Alright everyone,

I decided to attempt the install of my EZ Locker. I have a D30 up front in my 97 TJ. I have the diff cover off, the axles out, fluid all drained, and I have the bearing caps off. Since I bought the locker used I only have instructions for a Lock-Rite. Makes it a bit hard to decipher what exactly to do next. Anyone have any write-ups or suggestions as to what to do next. Oh, and if you could use some layman terms that would be great. Thanks everyone.

Wade,

You don't need instructions or write-ups to install an EZ Locker. You
only need that for the hard locker. :)

sorry, couldn't resist. Unfortunately I don't have any useful advice to
give you.

I know, you would think by the name that it would be EASY. I guess if you were somewhat mechanically inclined you wouldn't have that much of a problem. Simon over at 4Wheelers faxed me a copy of the instructions, so that will help a bit. If anyone would like to come help me out that would be great. Just let me know when.

Maybe the dealer doesn't know its there (not "test driven" but
stolen?). Anyone remember which dealer it was from. Maybe we could
contact them and have them go get their trash.

flares for a little bit. I want to cut my rear fenders out the shape
of the rear flares. Unfortunately I already sold all my flares. I
just need a set to hold up there for a quick minute and trace a line
around. Does anyone have a set laying around they will let me use?
I will be quick, I can even trace my line in your driveway!

Thanks a ton!

I believe that compressor is made by Extreme Outback. For the
money they are asking you should look at the ExtremeAire, also
made by Extreme Outback
http://www.extremeoutback.com/Compressors.htm
It puts out about four times the air volume as the Big Red and is
also continuous duty. Mine with no air tank brings all four of my
35" MT/R's up from 10psi to 28psi in about 10 minutes. Jason at
4x4groupbuy.com or Allen at Bronco One can either one get you
the ExtremeAire for less than the Big Red you are looking at.

Do you think they would mind if you went to the Stealership and did a little
tracing ? You could always tell them the old Cinderella story : If this
flare fits my bank account , I'll come right back and pay cash for the Jeep
......Salesmen will usually fall for it .....

Well, I finally got around to notching my transfer case skid plate so that
the front drive shaft clears at full flex. Take a look at the link to see
what it looks like. It's not very pretty, but what do expect from a hack saw
and dremel tool :-) You can also see the rub mark on the drive shaft where
it used to rub.

Additionally, the HMMWV can hold a stretcher without added
modification. I'm sure some of you have seen the ambulance versions
of the Jeep - I don't know if they are longer than a CJ6 or not but
they definitely require a different vehicle. Any HMMWV can hold a
stretcher without mods.

The proposal for replacement of the M151 also had to be able to keep
up with Bradley Fighting Vehicles and M1 tanks over rough ground.
Short wheelbase or narrow vehicles have a hard time with that, so
just like the Pontiac ad says, "wider is better"

I did go off-roading in ours ;-) but basically they suck for any fun
stuff...they're great for going places the tracks can go though.

Subject: HELP - YJ Brakes

Has anyone gone to a Waggie D44 and a F8.8 at the same time? My
question is: Does going to larger calipers require a larger master
cylinder? My problem is that I cannot get the brakes to pump-up during
the bleeding process. I have gone thru 2-pints of DOT3 and there is no
air coming out @ any of the slaves - just clean fluid and the pedals' to
the floor. I've bled brakes since I was ten years old and never seen
this before.

Thnx for any input!

Wade,
I've helped on a couple of locker installs on D-30's, and on both of
them we had to put a chain or cable around the diff assemply and then
place a high lift jack, usually on the front bumper, and jack it out.
It helps to put a box on the floor in front of the diff case to break
the fall when it finally does come out. I've never done the EZ
locker, but I understand that it is just like the lock rite that I
have in mine?

Wade,

A couple of pry bars, one each side, will take the carrier out. There is a
little resistance from the bearing preload, but not too much.
Watch that it doesn't fall out in your lap when you do this,( don't ask me
how I know this).

Subject: [TR] Crown King from Lake Pleasant - Saturday, August 2, 2003

Hello All,Brad Rogers is leading a Crown King from Lake Pleasant trail run on Saturday, August 2, 2003.

When: Saturday, August 2
Where: Crown King
Rating: 3.0-
Length: Unsure
CB Channel: 4

I have been wanting to do a Crown King trip while the Monsoons are here. I would think that the mud factor would be extremely high this time of year. If anyone is interested in going please feel free. I have never run it before so if someone else wants to lead the trip please feel free. I'm going to run it either way. Hope to see some of you on the trail. I believe we can meet at the Crown King exit off of I-17. If there is a different spot please let me know. 8:00am is when I plan on being at the turn off. See you there.

The Lake Pleasang to Crown King trail is a local favorite. On any given weekend, there will be numerous groups of four wheelers, ATV's and motorcycles heading to and from Crown King. It is a fun and scenic trail into the cooler pines of the Bradshaws. This trail was the first trip ever done by AzVJC.

The trail takes off from the Castle Hotsprings Rd and travels through the foot hills and up the side of the mountain, giving nice views of Lake Pleasant and the Valley. There are some tougher optional sections that can make it interesting.

The trail goes through the old ghost towns of Fort Misery and Oro Belle, both of which are remnants of the Mining era of the Bradshaw Mountains. All that remains now, are foundations and a few crumbling walls. Fort Misery makes a nice place to stop and eat lunch as the small creek usually has running water and there are trees to provide shade.

In the winter months, the trail from Fort Misery through Oro Belle to Crown King will often have snow and/or ice. In the summer, an early start is necessary to stay ahead of the rising temperatures.

Once on top of the mountain, the trail runs through the cool pines and into Crown King. In Crown King there are places to eat and have a drink, and a general store that sells some excellent fudge. The old Crown King Saloon was actually built in Oro Belle, and later hauled up (many years ago) to Crown King and rebuilt. In Oro Belle, the saloon was built into the side of the hill, so the upstairs were mainly accessable from the rear of the building (at ground level). The upstairs served as a place repose for women of ill fame.

There are campgrounds on top of the mountain near Crown King for those wishing to stay overnight. The fastest way down is via the main road which leads through Cleator and toward Bumble Bee. You can split off and go through Cordes Junction, which will get you to the Freeway quicker, or keep going strait and go through the little town of Bumble Bee.

Alternatively, you can take the Senator Highway toward Prescott or Mayer, this can be a very interesting trail during snow season. If you have the time, follow Towers Mountain rd through Crown King and up to the top of Towers Mountain, there are some excellent views and you can join back up with the Senator Highway afterward.

Have fun, remember to bring water and your camera.

Enjoy, and remember to TREAD Lightly!
