James,
I don't know what you have for your steering setup in the front, but to run
them in the front one pretty much needs to go hi-steer.
The stock steering just has too much "stuff" (track bar mount, steering
stabilizer mount, spring pad) in the way on the passengers side especially.
The stock track bar mount hangs below the axle :(
Anyway, I'll be swapping in a HP30 and doing the WJ knuckle swap, with
hi-steer (and *much* bigger brakes as a bonus).. That'll clear up space for
the mounts for the front axle.

checked the motor mounts, look good.
where do I check the tranny mounts? Do I need to lower the t/c?
Someone else mentioned Shifter linkage? I'm not sure what that is..
here's a picture of what I think that is..

also.. is there supposed to be any space between the tranny and the t/c
skid? I noticed that I bent the t/c skid to where the tranny is sitting
right on it. (front edge)

Sounds to me like you found your culprit!! A bad tranny mount is easy to
replace.
Support the tranny with a floor jack and drop your skid plate enough to pull
out the old mount.
When you put the bolts back in I would suggest using locktight on them. When
I replace my tranny mount with a poly mount the bolts would work free about
every 5000 miles or so, until I locktighted them.

Good luck,
Shawn

Hello All,
Joel Jonson lead a trail run Saturday, July 26, 2003 across Unspecified

This was a fun trip with good people. The trip ended up taking over twice as long to finish due to a couple of unexpected breaks. Despite the heat and the dollars that it will take to get everybody back on the trail again, it was a good time. Go team YJ!
It almost looks like they pushed the front axle forward, in those
pictures. The spring perch doesn't seem to be sticking off the front
half of the axle. It may be an optical illission. Also, what is that
extra TRE up in there?

I want to know where is a good source for WJ knuckles.

My buddy has a 97 TJ and just replaced the water pump, radiator, thermostat, hoses, and serpetnine belt and he is still having a problem with his jeep overheating. Has anyone else had this problem or know what else could be the problem. The mechanic he took the jeep to said that he had no idea why it is running so hot and that he should take the jeep to the dealership.

James, I'll have to look again, when I get home tonight, at those photos to
see what the TRE is.. I don't remember off the top of my head.. Remember,
though, on this type of hi-steer, both the drag link AND the tie rod attach
separately to the steering knuckle (passenger side), so that may be what
you're seeing.. Also the track bar (axle mount) is very close to that same
area (passenger side), so that also, may be what you're seeing.
Mark Hinkley makes a nice set of weld on brackets for the track bar and
steering stabl. to locate those to the top of the axle.. He also makes the
weld on spacers for the WJ knuckles which are requred to use the WJ
knuckles.
Regarding the axle pushed forward, it may be a little, but the spring
perches aren't the stock ones.. This is part of what's done in the whole
process of using those j-arms in the front.. The stock spring perches are
cut off and newly fabed ones that "sit back" on the axle are used (welded
on)..
I'll post up here, when I get started, where I get the WJ knuckles from.

Best,
Fred

What radiator did he use for a replacement ??
Those 3 core GDI (or whatever they are), simply don't work well on TJ's..
They're too dense and it's too hard to pull air through 'em...

Opps, also noticed from your first e-mail that nothing was done regarding
the fan clutch.. That's something that needs to be checked for sure... If
it's bad it won't pull air at slower speeds, stop and go driving, etc.. If
it's during highway driving that it's overheating, then that's not the fan
clutch.

Fred

Mike,

What do you consider the advantages and disadvantages of the J-arms
(medium length control arms) and long-arms?

I almost converted my old ZJ to a long-arm setup but backed off after
examining the design/fab/materials/maintenance costs versus what I
would get out it. Then I sold the Jeep :-(

it's still intact. Mic and antenna cables are tight. I haven't

it was when the lights etc. were on. What the heck? It's a Uniden 520

Hello All,
Steve Olney lead a trail run Sunday, July 27, 2003 across Coves of Saguaro Lake

Had lots of fun, Linda and her kids followed in her 2003 Honda pilot (my daughter's little red wagon has better articulation) followed all the way to cove 6.

Kids: Stephanie (5), Christina & Elizabeth (2), Megan (7), and Bradly (6) played in relativly clear water chasing baby blue gills.

Trip was uneventful untill we tried leaving and (due largly to lack of articulation) Honda had problems getting up first hill. Just when I thought it was going to make it out, Bang!!! (sounded like I ran her car straight into rock). Fortuneatly was just a blown tire. Unfortuneatly her spare was only a donougt (no jelly).

With the donought on, we proceeded carefully out though Cottonwood camp (.23 mph) arriving at highway approx 6PM.

Linda lamented that Honda was inteded for "light off highway use". I told her for a Jeep this is light use.

Subject: advantages/disadvantages? [was Re: Anyone wanna guess]

As for the J arms, The only advantages that I see (someone correct
me if I'm missing something) are more control of the axle due to the
mounting point being around the back of the axle. The extra length
is only because it has to wrap around. It also has jonnie joints at
both ends for more articulation. For a long arm kit, I see many
advantages. With a tall lift, it soaks up the bumps MUCH better than
short arms because the angle of the arm is less severe since its
frame mounting point is moved back. Also with the added length, it
can articulate alot further with far less stress on the arms, axle
and all the components since the "arc" of movement is alot larger.
Most long arm kits mount to the frame up above the skid plate so
there is no (or very little) interference to cause hang ups. The
arms can actually slide along a rock and help get you over an
obstacle with less stress on axle components since the tire is
hitting the rock below 90 deg. to the rock. If triangulating the
long arms, you get added benefiets of losing your track bar and
allowing for articulation in both directions to be the same. I think
that the most obvious benefiets that someone will see of the long
arms is if you are over 6" of lift and feel bumps on the road. With
short arms you can actually feel and see the axle pushing back into
the arm and frame. With a long arm, your angle is far less severe
and it absorbs the bumps MUCH softer. With that and the larger arc,
you have alot less wear on bushings, joints, and axle parts. The J
arms are great for lifts that are 4" or less, but I don't see them
working nearly as well with taller Jeeps. Can anyone show me that
they work for taller lifts?
