Subject: HELP!!! 98 TJ will not start!
Okay, here is the situation... I took my Jeep to the dealer to have
the tranny and t-case leaks fixed. No problems there. Then 2 days
later I backed my Jeep up in the driveway while I was working on the
CJ. I left the keys in the ignition. Keys were not in the on
position as far as I know.
Now the problem...
When I turned her over to start it, there was no life! My guages and
dash lights worked fine so I ruled out a dead battery. When I turn
in over there is no clicking sound or anything. I pulled the starter
off and went to AutoZone. Had it tested and it was no good, so I
bought a new one tested it at AutoZone and it worked great. When I
got home and installed it there was still no change. I then replaced
the starter relay as well and still nothing.
What I think now...
I noticed the steering wheel is not locking like it should. Could
this whole problem be my ignition? If I go out and buy a new
ignition for my Jeep is this an easy thing for me to change out?
What do you all think? I hate seeing my Jeep just sit there! I
don't wanna miss the rain!!! Please Help!!

It could be the clutch/neutral circuit if you have a manual. Or if it's an
automatic it could be in the neutral safety switch. If something was wrong
with these circuits it would produce the exact symptoms you are having.

Are you sure there isn't just enough power to power the gauges, but not
enough to turn the starter?
Manual tranny? If so, maybe the clutch safety switch (the one that
makes you push the clutch in before it will start) is improperly
adjusted or faulty. I think on 98s you just have to pull a fuse to
disable this.

Wow Scott, we think alike. One more thing, if it is an auto tranny, did
you maybe bump it out of park enough to keep it from starting. Maybe
shift to neutral and back?

Okay, I tried all the ideas posted so far and have no luck. I
checked all the fuses and they are all okay. I put the charger on
the battery and it read the battery was good.
One thing I forgot to mention in the first place was that I am able
to start my Jeep by putting the key in the ON position then crossing
the two wires on the starter solenoid.
Does that help anything?
Any more ideas? Thanks for the help so far!

James,
Concerning the bracket and removing the diff cover. The brace that
bolts to the 3 diff holes is attached to the tri-link bracket with two
bolts. These two bolts are removed and then the diff cover bolts. The
diff cover is then removed and cleaned and RTVed back on in the normal
manner. I didn't realize that the brace was bolted to the bracket.
Sorry to have given you the wrong info. Like I said before, I've not
gotten chance to spend much time under the TJ yet. When you don't do
the mod yourself, it certainly does put one at a slight disadvantage
(especially during these question and answer sessions!)

I am sitting here at work but as I remember it, the cover slips under
the
bracket and the bolts go through the holes. So, I guess you woiuld say
the
bracket goes over the cover. I've not gotten my nose into it quite that
far

and
look around a bit and the driveway was too hot to lay on (I backed the

The Truck Air compressor is you best bet for cheap air. As for it being
quick... It will be the best bet without jumping up to the 100+ range.

Hello All,Joe Kearney is leading a Jack Handle trail run on Friday, July 18, 2003.

When: Friday Night, 7:00pm Meeting
Where: Meet at the Box Canyon turn off in Florence.
Rating: 3.5+
Length: 3-4 Hours
CB Channel: 4
Going on a night run and sorry for the late post. My schedule change so I will be going out Friday night. I want to do Jack Handle but am open for other trails. I do not want too big of a group as I would like to be home before 3:30 like my last night run. 4-5 Jeeps would be great.
Jack Handle is a nice but fairly short loop trail that has a number of challenging obstacles. It starts out in a fairly flat wash. It then winds around as the trail gets tighter and tighter.

There are a few small waterfalls and many table sized boulders to navigate along the way, including a fairly narrow slot that you have to scramble up. This slot makes it a very tight squeeze for full size vehicles (and probably not advisable). The trail can be run in about 2 hours or so.

The first guy to run this trail didn't see one boulder and ended up using his jack handle as a temporary tie rod to finish the trail so keep your eyes open along the way. When you think you at the end, the trail juts up out on the wash and gives you a view of the whole area. Then you are in for a few roller coasters and a steep drop back to where you started.

This is not a trail to be tried unless you are an experienced 4-wheeler with a well equipped vehicle. High clearance and some traction devices are required. Water and your camera are a must.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

I think on 98s you just have to pull a fuse to
disable this.

you maybe bump it out of park enough to keep it from starting. Maybe

Does that help anything?

bolts to the 3 diff holes is attached to the tri-link bracket with two

James,
I am sitting here at work but as I remember it, the cover slips under
the
bracket and the bolts go through the holes. So, I guess you woiuld say
the
bracket goes over the cover. I've not gotten my nose into it quite that
far
(yet) so I could be mistaken. I went out last night to get under the TJ
and
look around a bit and the driveway was too hot to lay on (I backed the
TJ
out of the garage).

Gas station for a quarter or two?
