Nick,
If there's ONE thing I've learned about dealing with ANY parts supplier...
make sure you take in the old part at the same time you purchase the new
part and compare them on the spot. I can't tell you how many times I've
been given the wrong part before I started a job and ended up having to come
back... and SOMETIMES, they don't even have the correct part :(
Good Luck! Cooling problems are a real bear sometimes... especially when it
is 117 degrees outside.

Subject: RE: Changing gears someday soon...Need the info.
Of you have a four banger now then you have 4.10 gears. 4.56 will be ok but
you may want to go to 4.88 instead.
No you will not need a new carrier. If you are going to lock it then go with
a super 35 in the rear. Locking a stock 35C is asking for trouble as it has
very week axels to start with. As for the front if you have the cash go with
a super 30 kit. Both super kits give you D44 alloy axels and are very
strong. If you do not have the cash at least go with a selectable locker in
the front.
With 4.56 gears and 33" tires you will need a 39 tooth speed-o gear. If you
go to 4.88 you may not need to change the speed-o gear.
Shoot me an email when you are ready to do this.

I'm planning on regearing my '97 TJ (BRUZR) for 33" tires and a 4
banger sometime soon. Is 4.56 enough? I was told that I would need a
new carrier and a complete install kit. I know absolutely nothing
about all of this, but was planning on regearing and locking the
front and rear all in one fell swoop. also, how would I find out what
speedo gear I need to change to when I do all of this? I was told on
that, the computer uses some of the speedo readings for automatic
adjustment. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Toys by Troy really has the best suspension out there that I have driven. I
was over there yesterday with Stu (his Jeep should be done getting the setup
today) and test drove Troys white TJ. It had 37's & 10" coils. It rode and
handled much better than my 5.5" RE long arm kit did. The steering on his
kit is absolutely amazing. In my opinion there is no better setup available
nor is there a setup that is more complete or better engineered. It may seem
expensive but if you start pricing out different kits that also include a
total steering solution I think you'll see that his prices are fair. If I
were to ever buy another TJ I wouldn't hesitate to have Troy put his kit on
it. Obviously you don't have to run 10" coils :D

Subject: 10" coils [was Re: New Member lots of questions]
Scott,
Are those 10" coils just plain suspension coils? Coil-over shocks? Or
MacPherson struts? Just curious.
I was at the edge of the 4:1 rule with 6" coils on the ZJ. The 6"
coils were 22" long, 4" dia (working from memory), 140-150#/in
compression. These were custom made coils, not off-the-shelf. The
spring diameter could not be increased. The 4:1 rule is if the length
is more than 4x the diameter, the spring will start bowing. Those
springs gave the ZJ a great ride and incredible axle articulation.

I found the other York compressor that's been lying around for years.
I don't think this will be a good unit for a Jeep. It has a large
external flywheel and a single v-belt pulley. It weighs a lot. I have
no idea what shape it is in.

1.. What rear-end?
2.. I have 4.56's, and with my 4.o, it's OK, but I'll probably go higher when I replace the axle (D35)
3.. Talk to Randy's ring and pinion, they have knowledgeable people.
4.. Yes you have to replace carrier, if you don't have one big enuff for the ring gear.
Kong did my install, good work. Does anyone know if they re still in business?

I'm planning on regearing my '97 TJ (BRUZR) for 33" tires and a 4
banger sometime soon. Is 4.56 enough? I was told that I would need a
new carrier and a complete install kit. I know absolutely nothing
about all of this, but was planning on regearing and locking the
front and rear all in one fell swoop. also, how would I find out what
speedo gear I need to change to when I do all of this? I was told on
that, the computer uses some of the speedo readings for automatic
adjustment. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

When doing gears you need a master install kit for each axel your
doing... it has shims and replaces the bearings that are going to
get torn up taking them off the carrier and pinion gear. You know
you are going to 4.56, so now figure out which lockers you want to
use. A lot of lockers replace your carrier. As far as the speedo
goes, get all your work done and then take it in to Dicks speedo in
phoenix, they'll put the right gear in for you. -Rob

For all of you in the heated debate over the Rock Crawler episode of

I was a fan of the Monster Garage series until I

in the OHV community are fighting a constant battle to
keep the areas that we visit open and curb the
negative stereotype that is associated with our

irresponsible 4-wheeling. The leaking transmission

the Rock Crawler episode are the type of activities

can be minimized by responsible 4-wheeling. As
mentioned before, we fight a constant battle to show

that when practiced responsibly, our OHV 4-wheeling
creates a minimal and acceptable impact to the
environment. A number of the actions portraid on the

Nick,
If there's ONE thing I've learned about dealing with ANY parts supplier...
make sure you take in the old part at the same time you purchase the new
part and compare them on the spot.

-Rob

For all of you in the heated debate over the Rock Crawler episode of
Monster Garage... there was a post on the forum on the website where

was a reply from the shows producer. Here are the two posts for your

POST:
I was a fan of the Monster Garage series until I
watched the Rock Crawler episode. I am an OHV
enthusiast who frequently enjoys the joys of traveling
off road and testing the capability of my vehicle. We
in the OHV community are fighting a constant battle to
keep the areas that we visit open and curb the
negative stereotype that is associated with our
"sport." There are thousands of OHV enthusiasts all of
ther country whom are poorly represented by
irresponsible 4-wheeling. The leaking transmission
fluid and excessive driving style both exhibited on
the Rock Crawler episode are the type of activities
that we try to minimize and eliminate. These
activities cause undue harm to the environment which
can be minimized by responsible 4-wheeling. As
mentioned before, we fight a constant battle to show
environmentalists, park rangers, politicians, etc.
that when practiced responsibly, our OHV 4-wheeling
creates a minimal and acceptable impact to the
environment. A number of the actions portraid on the
Rock Crawler Episode did not portray the responsible
4-wheeling that so many people practice and promote.
Many of us contribue many hours and some long weekends
to keep the OHV areas we use clean and maintaned in an
effort to protect the environment we use and dispell
the stereotype that we are faced with.
