As we were driving up US180 in New Mexico a couple of weeks ago, it struck me that if we needed an emergency room, or even some medical care, I would not know which way to go. I know it exists in Silver City, but we were a lot closer to Luna and Reserve. So I was wondering if there was a list of medical facilities I could print out and keep in the truck. Something that says things like:

Willcox, AZ, emergency room on Rex Allen Drive, south of I-10 at exit 340.

May not be helpful, but we have a Garmin GPS with City Navigator loaded and we can just click on "hospitals" while driving and it will tell us where the closest one is and it will tell us exactly how to get there. There is also a button for "police" and "fuel" and another section for "points of interest" which you can find restaurants, churches, etc.

More information here:

Of course, you'd need to have a Garmin GPS to use it. I'm thinking about buying this for my parents (to give ME peace of mind!) It comes preloaded with City Navigator, you don't have to buy it extra.

You might check into the 200W since it has a wider screen.

I work for Southwest Ambulance and a lot of us are starting to buy these units.

Good idea. Anyone know if there is a list for all of AZ that could be printed and put in the glove box? My guess is that there isn't as now-a-days you are just expected to call 911. And now that I think of it, calling 911 kind of answers your original question anyway.

That is a nicer unit. There are so many Nuvi versions, it's hard to choose between them!

911.

My wife said the same thing. However, I have been lots of places in Arizona where there is no phone coverage.

My GPS was stolen, so I am suffering through not having one at the moment. I am debating whether to get the one I really want, but can't afford (the 276C, or maybe the nuvi 500), or get the cheapest Garmin off ebay so I don't cry when it is stolen again.

Southwest provided us with a list of west side/central/east valley hospitals and their phone numbers I just do not have a way to distribute it. In the valley 911 is the way to go.

I used Yahoo! maps to print out their surrounding streets and such, put them all in a notebook, then left the book in an ambo. It was gone the next shift I was in the ride....

If in cell phone range call 911 with your location.

Hardline, I have the Garmin Nuvi 660 with the 4.3 screen and love it.

I just finished a database of hospitals, listed in various places on the web, which are in Arizona. It seems some areas have more coverage than others. I would think Urgent Care clinics would be more available in remote locations (ie: not Phoenix nor Tucson).

I can have this available in *.mdb, *.doc, *.rtf, and *.xls format for the asking.

Clicky (http://www.azdhs.gov/bems/basehosp.htm)

This link is from the Arizona Department Health Services website & lists all of the Base Hospitals for ALS Providers, these include most, if not all Emergency Rooms throughout the state. If you call 9-1-1, at least in Maricopa & Pinal County's, the operator can give you directions to the closet ER, but will strongly encourage you to sit put & have help come to you, via ground and/or air.

this may be stating the obvious but if you are not in cell range your even farther from hospitle range. you will get signal before you get to a hospitle so call 911

If you are fortunate enough to have Health Insurance check with your provider most have a list of hospitals, emergency rooms and urgant care facilities.
