This is a bull snake. They have evolved to look like a rattler and they even coil up like a rattler but they do not have any venom. They are typically a good snake to have around, but they do scare the hell out of ya.
My Wife and I were camping up north one time and we were just setting up camp when I saw this snake all coiled up and what looked ready to strike at our dog, well the snake ended up going up in the engine compartment and my Wife would not let it rest until she knew it was out of the area. Well after about 45 minutes the snake too off across the road.
Cool picture.

Hi Gang:
I took this picture last Thursday on Cottonwood Canyon, work lead me to Florence and I figured a little dirt on the way home would not hurt. Saw this critter right in the middle of the trail, had to slam the breaks to avoid running it over. I waited until it crossed to my right side and took this picture. I don't know much about snakes so I'm curious as to what kind this is (could not make out the distinctive rattler so my guess is that its not one).
Thanks

Sonoran Gopher Snake..
Non venomous..
Very common..
They can reach lengths of over 6 feet..
This is un-doubtably what John saw on his porch the other night..
They are spirited hissers..
No rattlesnakes can hiss.

The Bull Snakes are actually a closly related species, found from Texas east ward..
Good call though.. Close enough to win a cigar ;)
Rather have you call 'em a Bull Snake, and know that they are non-venomous, then to call it something else, thinking it was venomous.. ;)

Fred,
Thanks for the correction. I sure didn't know rattle snakes don't
hiss and I thought all snakes have the ability to hiss but of course
realized that some hiss more than others. I guess I need to study up
on my snakes.

Dan is right. It's the driver, and the gearing is also a main factor.

Since you'll be towing...no, get the 6, no question.
If your wheeling, 4 is fine up to and under 33s. Anything more
(depending on what your doing) you'll need lower gears...but that's
pretty much across the board, regardless of motor size.
There are lot more determining factors in wheeling than power
output. Final torque to the ground, tire size and design,
suspension, and most important of all...the driver. As far as the
tranny goes, I've been pushing mine very hard on the rocks since I
bought it, and with 37s for almost a year now...no problems.

Mike,
With that list, its going to be one heck of a wrenching party took me 6
months to get all that done to mine. LOL
I would do the lift kit first, then the body and MM lift at the same time so
you don't have to mess with the fan shroud. Then you want to do the SYE and
driveshaft. With the lift, the driveshaft optimum length will change.
The gas tank skid will be easier with the body lift on, it gives you a
little more room to get you hands in to disconnect the fuel line.
Same for the track bar.
Hope this helps, sorry I can't help, but I am under orders from my wife not
to spend so much time on jeeps,LOL

Hello Gang,
Well with my XJ now down, it looks like a good time to take it apart and do a complete make over. Time for my ARB's. I have some very good used parts, and some new.
D35 Lock-rite very good condition, plus a brand new extra set of pins and springs: 170.00
D35 new, never been out of box, 4:56 ring and pinion from Randy's Ring and Pinion, plus a master rebuild kit including marking compound: 150.00
If you take both the gears and the Lock-rite, I will sell both together for 300.00
Closed system out of my 87 XJ, 2 core radiator - good condition, no leaks ever, changed to do upgrade. Included is the bottle, cap, and heater valve.( not the cheap plastic crap either, all metal: 50.00
Two stock track bars: 15.00 each
None of the prices above include shipping. But I live in Payson, and it can probably be arranged for delivery if you are not too far in the valley. I go to the valley approximately once a week.

Thanks
Jose

Some of you may remember a posting from a Jeeper about being a beta tester for what he now calls the Hi-Lift Handle Hugger. About 20 of you got one of these little gadgets in the mail for some beta testing.
It appears that the testing period is over and they can be had by one and all.

All in all, it is a pretty cool little widget!

Subject: XJ parts For Sale
Hello Gang,
Well with my XJ now down, it looks like a good time to take it apart and do a complete make over.
