The 4 cylinder tranny will not bolt up to the 6.

The input spline count on the transfercase is also different so the
transfercase won't bolt up to a 6 cylinder tranny without changing out the
input shaft.

So you essentially need the 6 cylinder engine, tranny, and transfercase.

The motor mounts welded to the frame are different so you will need to cut
them off the frame and have the 4 cylinder mounts welded in.

Then there is the wiring and computer to deal with.

If you are going to that much trouble you may as well pick up a 350 V8,
700R4, and your choice of transfercase instead. Cost and effort will be
similar to swapping in the 6.

And Joey K is wrong about the AX5 and AX15 differences. The trannies appear
similar but there is a lot more different than just the output. Even the
drain and fill locations are different on the AX5 vs AX15. The AX15 is
substantially stronger all around and is supposed to be able to handle V8
power. I just had bad luck with mine when it died at 28k miles. This was due
to a discrepancy form the factory on which GL rated lube to use in it. I
know of others with 98s and 99s that have ran the wrong fluid due to the
typo in the owners manual.

thanks to all who responded to my 4 cyl questions. pretty much what i
expected. i am sure i could live with the 4, but as someone said,
i've never heard anyone with the 6 say they wish they had the 4.(
maybe after they broke something). but lets just say i couldnt wait
to get the extra cash and bought a 4 cyl.( no i havent yet). it would
probably be a 97 or98. down the road how difficult would a swap to a
newer 4.0 be ? if i used the same tranny, 4.0 and 5 spd. how about
the 4.0 and aw-4 in the xj's? that seems like a good combo. are the
electrics/ computers similar? what about a 4.3? thanks again, byron

Rob,

Soak the yoke in very hot water and then try it on. (I remember this trick
being in the directions when I did one of the hack and tap SYE's 4 years
ago.)

Good luck!

I started the cut and tap SYE on my TJ. Got the shaft cut and
everything cleaned up. I was putting on the yoke to see how it fit
and I was going to use it to mark the center of the output shaft,
but I can't get the yoke to go on. I cleaned up the shaft, so there
are no burs or anything. I decided to use the piece of the output
shaft I cut of that has the beveled end to see if it was just hard
to line up after you cut the end, and even that wont go on. I'm
beginning to wonder if I got the correct part. I kinda have to get
this done by 5:00 because I have school tonight, so I am starting to
get a little frustrated. If anyone can give me a little insight I
would appreciate it! -Rob

My 2001 4.0L has the NV3550 tranny. How does that compare to the
AX15? Is it better or worse? I'm not sure why mine has a different
tranny than most others but that's what the dealer says I have.

Thanks,

tail lights are not LED tail lights. They are just standard stop

It came out of a Scout II, you can often find scouts with dual dana
44's that are just slightly wider then standard cj. The scout that I
got (from TJ) had a dana 60 in the rear, but that wasn't stock.
While the 44 will work great for me, you have to take in to account
that in order to mount it on the narrower frame of the cj I had to do
a bit of fabricating and make some outboard spring hangers, as the
pumpkin is offset a bit more than the stock dana 30.

Rob,

Make ABSOLUTELY sure that the reason you can't put the yoke on is because
you have damaged the splines by trying to force it on. Recently, I helped a
member who had the exact same problem and when I looked at the splines on
the yoke... there was very small gouges that you could see on the ends of
the splines inside the yoke. The splines were *just* compressed enough
because of the force the member used (and it doesn't take much) to cause
them not to line up properly (the ends of the splines were flared out
slightly and you REALLY had to look close to see it). I ended up fixing the
problem by taking a small dremel grinding wheel and smoothing out the
splines on the yoke. I also used the dremel to put a bevel (45 degrees or
so) on the transfer case output shaft to make it easier to engage without
damaging the yoke.

The key word here is NO FORCE... if it doesn't go on smoothly, most likely
you have damaged the splines on the yoke assembly OR you forgot to bevel the
edge of the transfer case output shaft. Take a few minutes under a bright
light and examine things closely... I'll bet you some Krispy Kreme doughnuts
that you've banged up the splines <grin>.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

They did have the same sort of problem with the first plutonium
bomb, the one exploded at Trinity. The plutonium "plug" (which
contained the neutron initiator core) would not fit into the
hole in the plutonium sphere. Why? The two parts were machined
to thousandths of an inch tolerance, and the plug and the core
were not the same temperature. They let both sit for a couple
of hours to equalize the temperature, and then the plug slid in with
no problems. But as Joe says, in yoke installation (and, I
may add, plutonium core insertion), the key word is
NO FORCE. =P

BTW, I did a run to the Trinity Site (White Sands Missile Range
opens it up twice a year to visitors.) After I visited Trinity,
I did some shunpiking and offroading (found a nice box canyon),
and also got some great pics of the VLA. All the pics are 1600x1200,
though, and I haven't had a chance to reduce them. When I do,
I will post a trip report and the pics to the list.

Tammy Pike from the ASLD has received authorization to complete 4 of the 7-8
projects she had in the works...........

1. M.P. 201 in Gold Canyon east of Apache Junction. The area directly
around 201 will be closed for "dust" issues but the Land Dept. is signing
and opening several hundred miles of trails just east of the 201
marker....... (Kings Ranch Road) to Hwy 79 and south to Hunt Hwy. The west
boundry is Ironwood Road. This is a partnership with the 4 ranchers in the
area as well as Game & Fish. This is a HUGE step forward in obtaining
access for motorized recreation. I know most of this is ATV and motorcycle
stuff but there are several gravel pits in the area that I am proposing "4x4
play areas".

2. The second local area is the Pima & Dynamite area in Scottsdale. Many of
you helped by attending a RED SHIRT meeting about a year ago. This meeting
lead to a "partnership" deal meaning the motorized users would retain "some"
trails and riding trails, as well as access into the Forest roads.

3. The third project is the 50 Year Trail in Tucson area. This is
predominately a non-motorized trail so the mountain bikers are helping with
this project.

4. The fourth project is the "re-opening" of a beautiful canyon just west
of Kingman. This canyon borders a BLM Wilderness area so the Kingman BLM
are helping with this, along with a couple of 4x4 clubs in the area.

The PROBLEM is: We NEED WORKERS IMMEDIATELY!!!! I am calling for workers
for the 201 area......... we need 5-10 guys that can help put signs along
the trails Tues (TOMORROW) - Friday. Saturday and maybe Sunday we need two
crews each day of approx. 5-10 guys each. An a.m. crew and a p.m.
crew................ we'll be putting in three kiosks on saturday....
finishing the signing if needed and using Sunday if needed.

These projects MUST be completed by this weekend or we lose
ALL................ Tammy Pike's OHV position at State Land Dept. ends May
2 and ALL checks, receipts and project personnell are done as of this
weekend.

I know this is ugly short notice but it is for an important project/issue.
PLEASE find an hour or two to help out. The Arizona Trail Riders are

Tomorrow we will be meeting at the Texaco at 11:00 a.m................. for

Some of you may remember a posting from a Jeeper about being a beta tester for what he now calls the Hi-Lift Handle Hugger. About 20 of you got one of these little gadgets in the mail for some beta testing.

It appears that the testing period is over and they can be had by one and all.

Details on it at: http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/handle-hugger.htm

All in all, it is a pretty cool little widget!

Who has the best deals in town on cv driveshafts? At this point I
don't necessarily need the beefiest in the world, I just need
something that will get me by for a couple months until I can afford
a better one.

Subject: Can anyone identify type of snake

Hi Gang:

I took this picture last Thursday on Cottonwood Canyon, work lead me to Florence and I figured a little dirt on the way home would not hurt. Saw this critter right in the middle of the trail, had to slam the breaks to avoid running it over. I waited until it crossed to my right side and took this picture. I don't know much about snakes so I'm curious as to what kind this is (could not make out the distinctive rattler so my guess is that its not one).

Thanks
Jose

John,

It's similar in strength and the gear ratios are very close. They switched
to it in model year 2000. It's the same manual tranny you find in the light
duty Dodge trucks (except that the bellhousing is different). As far as I
have seen they are about equal.

My 2001 4.0L has the NV3550 tranny. How does that compare to the AX15? Is
it better or worse? I'm not sure why mine has a different tranny than most
others but that's what the dealer says I have.

Thanks,
John
