This has absolutely nothing to do with Jeeps, and I personally couldn't
care less what religion (or lack thereof) anyone here is. Take it to
email and off the list!

No offense to those of you that have one, and probably like it, but I say DONT GET THE 4CYL ! I can tell you from one of my past life in sales management and working for a dealer that among other things sold Jeeps, that the 4 cyl to a dealer is the KISS OF DEATH ! Resale is tough, they are hard to get rid of and if a salesman sold a used one, he got a big bonus for getting rid of it. Most of them went to auction. My daughter has a 4cyl and it truly cannot hold its own to the 4.0. You will NOT be able to tow and if you do your gas milage will go down hill quick.......the diff in milage between her 4 and my 6 is just about 2 mpg. I cant speak for the TJ tranny but the 4.0 YJ has the AX15 tranny which (and Scott K wont agree with this :-) is damn dependable and rugged compared to the AX5 the 4 bangers had (that is if you had the 5sp manual). Just my opinion stay away from the 4 cyl, especially if you want to tow and most definetely if you want to go with 33's or 35s.

Resurecting a dead dog.... I was thinking about this post after
seeing the new edition of Jeep magazine I recieved.
Some new editions of the KJ, TJ & WJ are called the "Freedom"
edition. Is this DC's way of capitolising off the war? Maybe they
models were slated to come out before the war on, I don't think so.
Never forget 9/11.
I have recieved quite a few emails that echo the sentaments in this
posting. I have never recieved any saying, Boycott German companies,
or, Boycott Russian companies.
You might be asking, what do the last two paragraphs have to do with
each other? Or maybe you figured it out. Do you know who owns Jeep?
Hint: It isn't an American company.
They won't support us on the field but, they will try to capitolize
off us.
Just something to think about, before you start blasting away on
just one country.
--James
PS - I was going to remove the "OT" because this does have to do
with Jeeps and thus is "on topic", but I decided against it.

Just curious about this, but I posted a run to the Jeep Jamboree at
Canyon de Chelly on June 6. I know these big Jeeps events can be a
little cheesy, but I don't care, I am gonna hang in a big group of
Jeeps and scope out Canyon de Chelly. Probably check out the
petrified forest on the way up and who knows what on the way back. I
just wanted to see if anyone thought this was something they wanted to
do, cuz registration closes in a couple of weeks.
Or am I missing something on Jamborees (like they are cheesier than I
realize)?

Since you'll be towing...no, get the 6, no question.
If your wheeling, 4 is fine up to and under 33s. Anything more
(depending on what your doing) you'll need lower gears...but that's
pretty much across the board, regardless of motor size.
There are lot more determining factors in wheeling than power
output. Final torque to the ground, tire size and design,
suspension, and most important of all...the driver. As far as the
tranny goes, I've been pushing mine very hard on the rocks since I
bought it, and with 37s for almost a year now...no problems.

Yup, this is the time of year for Gilas.. I've seen several in the last 6 weeks or so.. I have a few minutes of video of one that we found on Upper Woodpecker 3 or 4 weeks ago, that I can post up, if anyone wants to see it..
I assume that everyone knows that Gilas are one of only two venomous lizards in the world.. The venom isn't particularly toxic (as in capable of causing death), but it causes extreme pain.. This is clearly a case of venom pretty much evolved strictly for defense use, rather than for killing prey.. The main prey of Gilas are young rodents, bird eggs, etc., none of which require venom to subdue.. They raid nest, such as found in rodent burrows and such.
A venom, primarly for defense, would cause a lot of pain, but wouldn't be evolved to kill. If you kill the predatory that you bite, it can't pass on any "knowledge" to it's offspring ...
Anyway, they really are neat creatures.. It's virtually impossible to get bitten by one, unless you're messing with it (illegal, BTW, they are protected)... Be aware, they are a *lot* faster than they appear ;)
One of the reason that they are seldom seen, by most people, is that they aren't out and about very often. They spend a lot of time sitting in their burrows, with just the very end of their snout (black) sticking out.. Makes 'em extremely hard to spot.
Best,
Fred

Since a few people expressed interest in these

finished getting the dana 44 under the cj today.
Still have to get some new shocks, weld some shock
mounts differently then I originally expected, longer
brake lines, set up the steering, modify the skid
plate for the new axle (offset a bit more), and put
the new front driveshaft in. Oh and install the dana
60 under the rear and everything it entails (that's
next weekend). Needless to say I have plenty of
clearance over my 33's now :P. Notice the new width,
should put me at about TJ width.

Kent,
I went on this jamboree last year, and yes a little cheesy, but I had a
great time. The canyon is beautiful. Take the time the day before to drive
along the rim. It's cool to see it from the top, then form the inside.
Take along a good set of binoculars, it's alot easier to see all the
petrogliphs (sp?).
When you are registering they may ask you if you want to be a trip leader,
say yes, if you have an extra seat. They are looking for a place for the
guide to sit. You will have a guide for every five vehicles, it's the
rules. I had a guide ride with me and it was really fun to spend two days
talking to someone who grew up in the canyon. I even let her drive for a
while and I think it made her day.
Have a good time.

I will agree that if you can swing the difference in price get a 6. I used to own a 4 cylinder YJ and bought a 6 cylinder TJ. When I bought the TJ I did not even consider the 4 as an option. 4 years of driving with the 4 sold me on the 6. On the trail the 4 was okay, but on the street it was horrible.

Hi Kent,
I know what you mean about being with a bunch of Jeeps, but I'd post
a run and do it yourself with a smaller group if at all possible.
$250.00 "each" is a little steep to be paying for a trail guide, and
then you still pay for your own food and lodging.
You and your group can get a Navajo guide on your own, which is a
requirement to enter the canyons, for $10.00 an hour. I spent nine
hours in both canyons, saw just about everything there was to see,
and had everything explained to us. Our guide gave us the history and
folk lore of the area.
It was the best $90.00 I ever spent and would recommend going that
route. Either way, you'll enjoy the trip (make sure to bring your
camera.)
Just my opinion,

The 6cyl?
Sure, as everyone else has said, if you can afford it go for it. But if you are short in the $$ department dont give up on getting a jeep just because it has a 4 banger. I used to sell Jeeps and have owned and driven them in many configurations. I currently have a 4cyl TJ with 33" BFG's and a 4" lift. (and run my ac all summer!)
I also tow a 1,000lb trailer with my camping gear. And yes, I'm slow on the road, don't save much gas over a 6, and could use more power. But I also don't mind going 65 and spent the extra cash over a 6cyl to build up my Jeep, that I would not have been able to do had i got the 6. I have also taken my Jeep to hell and back on many of the worst trails this club runs and have yet to break anything (fingers crossed). So no, it may not be as heavy duty as the equipment on a six but as long as you dont beat the hell out of it every day it will last you a very long time.

I just stepped outside a few minutes ago (it's 11pm) to shake off a

some small twigs, etc blown up by our front door. I shook off the
rug and when I turned around to come back in one of those twigs was
moving toward me (maybe 1-2 feet away) and hissing. It was a baby
rattler! It didn't rattle (not sure if babies can) but it had the
colors of a rattler. Scaried the **** out of me! As I'm sure many
of you know the babies are more dangerous because they can't control
the amount of venum very well and end up pumping you full of poison.
Also I'm not sure but they may be more likely to bite also. So don't
be fulled by their cute (NOT!) baby appearance;)
The neighbors had Gila Monster last year and we all gathered around
and watched it (it was digging). It moved very slowly and didn't

I went to the Canyon de Chelly which is not hard wheeling but great
scenery. And you are unable to go with out a guide. You get to meet a
lot of great people and look at a lot of nice jeeps.
You get three squares a day, and a chance to win some great prizes
(not me)
There was also entertainment with native american dancers and such.
You will also go into both Canyons and will be in for about 14
hours,I'm not sure what the one guy is talking about that you do no
get food. If you have not been might be best not to answer.

FYI.
Today I went into Harbor Freight to purchase a parts cleaning tank and found
them on sale from $99 to $69 for the deluxe 20 gallon tank (includes
sprayer, pump and automatic lid which closes instantly in the event of a
fire inside the tank.
I put the tank together today and it is very sturdy with quality higher than
I expected.

Best,
Fred

Who cares? Some people think the AZVJC is cheesy. I say go for it if you
want to. I'll guess you'll encounter mostly stock Jeeps but Canyon de Chelly
is a neat place so why not see it and be with other Jeep owners?

Since a few people expressed interest in these
pictures I decided to post them for all to see. I
finished getting the dana 44 under the cj today.
Still have to get some new shocks, weld some shock
mounts differently then I originally expected, longer
brake lines, set up the steering, modify the skid
plate for the new axle (offset a bit more), and put
the new front driveshaft in. Oh and install the dana
60 under the rear and everything it entails (that's
next weekend). Needless to say I have plenty of
clearance over my 33's now :P. Notice the new width,
should put me at about TJ width.

Best,
Fred

Rick,
That is a VERY cool picture. Thanks for sharing... I too have never run across a Gila Monster in the wild. I think the coolest thing I've seen to date is rattle snakes and a desert tortoise.

Kent,
I went on this jamboree last year, and yes a little cheesy, but I had a

Hi Mike,
I will agree that if you can swing the difference in price get a 6. I used to own a 4 cylinder YJ and bought a 6 cylinder TJ. When I bought the TJ I did not even consider the 4 as an option. 4 years of driving with the 4 sold me on the 6. On the trail the 4 was okay, but on the street it was horrible.

Hi Kent,
I know what you mean about being with a bunch of Jeeps, but I'd post
a run and do it yourself with a smaller group if at all possible.
It was the best $90.00 I ever spent and would recommend going that
route. Either way, you'll enjoy the trip (make sure to bring your
camera.)
Just my opinion,
AJ Card

I just stepped outside a few minutes ago (it's 11pm) to shake off a
rug. As usual I did a quick look-around for snakes. All I saw was
some small twigs, etc blown up by our front door.
It moved very slowly and didn't
seemed bothered by us.
You've got to love the Southwest in the spring/summer! Just watch
out and keep an extra close eye on those curious kids!

I put the tank together today and it is very sturdy with quality higher than
I expected.
