Yeah, when the sector shaft let go, it was pretty loud. I think I must have cracked it or bent it about 20 yds earlier, as I was really bound up and wedged in a bad spot, but managed to get out with about a 20 pt turn.

Not to mention the amount of stress and shock it has been subjected too from previously pitman arm breakages. ( if you have had any )

The load shocks from flops, etc.

That sucks! Lance, we had a sector shaft breakage a couple of weeks ago on a friend's rig and were actually able to weld it up with a Ready Welder to get it off the trail...just a thought. Just had to make sure we poured on the heat and let it burn in for awhile.

That steering box is only a month old, as my last one blew a seal, and the one before that was the stock one with 70K on it.

I am not really worried about it being out there. The ONLY one who is gonna spot it is a low flying aircraft, and the chances of them flying over and looking down in that spot in that canyon is really remote. No way anyone is gonna walk in and out with anything, about 1.8 miles in the middle of the LOOOONG trail, and the trail is a real biatch, so that leaves out the moderate wheelers, and the experienced ones will more than likely leave it alone if they do find it. It is away from the more well known and commonly run trails out there.

Sure has been a rash of steering related issues recently. A friend in Colorado split his shaft just like that a few months back. It was actually in the jeep mag since it happend on a trail run they came along to photograph..

Time for assist.....

Why did you leave it, weren't there plenty of doner boxes a few wrench turns away..

Did you get it out?

Antman
09-08-2008, 09:17 AM
Guess what. Saturday morning Rich, (Katvans), broke his steering box shaft at the Cracks going into the Snake Pit loop. I happened to have one at home and they took the old box off while I was gone to get it and we had him running in about 2 hours. We then finished the trail and sat around the camp fire watching the sun set, and washing the days dust down with cold Corona.:smug:
There seems to be a few of those lately, stress finally catches up to them I
guess, although Rich said his was a super HD box.

The temps were 59* for low and 86* for high with a breeze.

I hope you got it out of there Lance. I guess someone in the group must now carry a steering box?

That looks like a nice trail you guys found. Good work...hope you were able to recover your Jeep.

A buddy of mine snapped his sector shaft earlier this year too on his Toyota, there is always a first time for everything. That will end your day quick! I carry a spare steering box w/ shaft attached now just in case.

Hope you made it out okay Lance. We'd already be on a search party since we haven't heard anything yet but we all know yourself and your group are more than prepared to get the job done... If you carried Chuck Norris on the trail like I do he could have hung down from your hood and steered you manually off the trail.

It is not a well publicized trail, and kept pretty quiet. I got a rash of chit for even posting pics of it. Certain areas that are run a lot, have a lot more rarely talked about trails. Some you will never hear of unless in certain groups. I just figured a couple pics couldn't hurt, I just hope the trail is still there when the "dust settles", so to speak......freakin EPA dust standards.

OK, a couple guys took me out to get my rig out of the middle of nowhere yesterday. I was not worried about it all week, but on the drive out, I started getting a little nervous about it still being there and intact. Especially when I saw a pickup with a set of 4 MT Baja Claws in the bed! Luckily, when we got to the scene of the carnage, there was my baby, fully intact and still wedged in the exact location, even with the rains we had, it was anchored good. Luckily, we got there early enough that the rig was still in the shade, so the work was reletively cool. The only concern we had was the 50 or so wasps that were drinking under the rig in the shade in a small pool of water. We poured a Gatorade in one location, and a Redbull in another, and most of the wasps went to these areas and gave us some peace while we worked on the rig. After all the wrenching, we went ahead and wheeled the rest of the day, and had a good time. Here are the rescue pics.

Going in with the rescue crew.......

Actually what I thought was a strap over the cooler appears to be a shadow from the cage.

Yeah I see the strap now...couldn't tell what that box was in the picture though.
That trail looks awesome...I want some.

Are you sure? I got a lot of new sheet metal work, I think we ALL did. Even got my "new" hood a little.

Strap is through the handles so I have quick access to the top and beverages(Redbull).

Geez Lance, I can't believe you left it out there all week. Glad your rig was OK and you got it fixed.

What box did you put in it?? Rebuilt, new, HD, how much??

Right now I am having mine rebuilt at Benchworks, should be done Mon, not a happy camper about what they found.

Had to leave it out, I had to work all week out of town. Jack broke last Sat too, but he was in a popular place, so the Sunday rescue went to him. I put in an S-10 box, new. Not sure on the price yet, I have to settle with Joe on Monday. What did they find with your box?

Wow. That looks like a really cool trail...Where is it at? Could my Rubi make it on 33's??? It looks like you could bypass that spot you are in, or at least throw some rocks in there to help a little. Looks like a fun trail!!
