I for one agree with you. I do not think it wise to do that. What about

This is my $.02 and that's all it is.
Well our "all wise and knowing" governess is at it again. It seems
that she loves to jump at the chance to change the name of some
significant landmark in this valley.
Anybody remember the airport re-naming incident???
It is required to honor our serviceman and women, I agree, but to
rename a mountain after a fallen soldier just for the sake of
appeasing a subject that has already seen its name issue come and go,
just seems wrong to me. War "Heroes", and "decorated" individuals
must be remembered, but I believe that this is the wrong way to go
about it.

Board votes to rename mountain after fallen soldier
PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- After prodding from the governor, a state
board Thursday decided to rename a prominent mountain peak after an
American Indian servicewoman killed in Iraq.
Some members of the Arizona Geographic and Historic Names Board had
resisted Gov. Janet Napolitano's push to rename Squaw Peak in honor of
Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, noting that federal policy requires that
people be dead five years before their names can be used on geographic
features.
But one critic resigned and chairman Tim J. Norton -- whose
resignation Napolitano had sought -- was a no-show when the rest of
the board voted 5-1 to rename the Phoenix landmark Piestewa Peak.
State maps and records are affected by the decision, which also serves
as a recommendation to a national board to change the name on federal
maps and documents.
"For the purposes of Arizona, the name is Piestewa Peak," said Tim
Nelson, general counsel for the Democratic governor.
Piestewa, a Hopi from Tuba City in northern Arizona, is the only
American servicewoman to die in the war. She was among nine members of
the Army's 507th Maintenance Company killed when their unit made a
wrong turn near Nasiriyah and drove into an ambush March 23. Six
members of the 507th were taken prisoner but ultimately rescued.
In renaming Squaw Peak, Napolitano sought to honor Piestewa while
removing a name many Indians find offensive. Indian lawmakers and
others had tried repeatedly to remove the word "squaw" from the names
of Arizona landmarks but failed to garner enough support.
The Arizona Geographic and Historic Names Board voted to change the
name of Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak.
The Arizona Geographic and Historic Names Board voted to change the
name of Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak.
"Lori's legacy will live on," said Delia Carlyle, vice chairwoman of
the AK-Chin Indian Community about 60 miles south of Phoenix.
Lloyd Clark, the only member on the state board to vote against the
change, said the point of the waiting period is to let emotions settle
before making a decision.
Richard Pinkerton resigned from the board Thursday after 19 years of
service, saying he refused to "prostitute my integrity in the interest
of satisfying a certain political venue."
In his resignation letter, Pinkerton said the board should not be at
"the governor's beck and call."
Napolitano asked Norton for his resignation after he resisted her
proposal and called wholesale name changes an "atrocity."
The board Thursday also gave its blessing to naming the Squaw Peak
Freeway after Piestewa. The state's transportation board is set to
decide whether to rename the roadway next month.

Joe I belive that your are right. I didn't want this to become another
4 day ordeal, I just wanted to voice my opinon of what our governess
is doing to our local landmarks. It has been Squaw Peak for as far
back as the states history records. What gives her (goveness) the
power to make such a desicion? That should be vote of the people that
live here, not hold office.. (need to take a breath)
With all this siad I am going to shut my pie hole.

Stu,
I understand what you are saying and it does make sense. I mean for an 1/8"
toe out, at the tires, the toe out on the tie rod will probably be less than
1/16". But, a measurement is just a measurement, a baseline if you will.
This measurement, I am thinking, will not be associated with a specific toe
in/out. I would bet that most stock axled/knuckled TJ's are really, really
close to the same measurement and a general measurement could be derived
from a survey.
Flexy, Joe, had told me that on a TJ the TRE to TRE should be 52.5". I have
had mine at this distance for some time now and I am getting more wear on
the inside of my tires than the outside. I was hoping to see if the 52.5"
was correct, in a general sense. I also thought, that this measurement could
be written inside the glove box in case someone bent a tie rod on the trail,
a trail fix might be easier.
I am planning on doing something different with my steering setup and really
didn't want to get an alignment right now. As a matter of fact, I already
have most of the parts I need to complete the mod. I wish I could buy some
more time someplace, lol.

James,
The further you move away from the tire surface, the more difficult it is to
get an accurate measurement, since the resoulution of the measuring device
(and the ability to accurately repeat it) must become progressively better
and better.
For example, my TJ with 35" tires, when properly aligned, has a fat 1/8"
difference between the front surface and rear surface of the tire, when both
surfaces are measured and the front measurement is subtracted from the rear
mesasurement (for toe-in). As you move the reference point for measuring
from the tire surface to the tie rod (bascially moving more towards the
center of the tire), getting an accurate measurement there, and being able
to reproduce it, becomes more and more of a challenge, IMO.
I realize that taking one measuremet from the tie rod is easier than
scribing a line on the front tires and then measuring them (the way FlexyXJ
showed me), but I just don't think one will be able to accurately determine
(and thus reproduce) that measrurement from person to person/vehicle to
vehicle. Look at it this way......how much would the measurement differ, at
the tie rod, if I set my TJ's toe to 1/4"? While this would be nearly twice
the desired toe, I am betting you will hardly notice the difference at the
tie rod.
Anyone else want to take a shot at this? This has the makings of a good
discussion thread, IMO.

James,
Measure toe-in as follows:
Measure the distance from the outer tread to outer tread on the front edge
of the front tires (the 9 o-clock position as you are facing the rim of the
tire in question).
Measure the distance from the outer tread to outer tread on the rear edge of
the front tires (the 3 o-clock position as you are facing the rim of the
tire in question).
Subtract the front edge measurement from the rear edge measurement and you
will have the toe-in number. If the number is negative, you are toed out.
The one area of caution is that you MAKE SURE that the tread you are
measuring from is the same tread on BOTH tires. My swampers have outer
treads that are placed differently and I will get bad results if I use an
"inner" outer tread mixed with an "outer" outer tread. In other words,
measure from the EXACT same point on both tires when you make your
measurements.
If you have questions... come on over and I'll help you... it will take
about 20 minutes.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

My XJ is 50.5" from inside of one knuckle to the inside of the other. From
center of hole to center of hole, it's 52". I never use the tires to check
toe, I always use the 50.5" knuckle to knuckle measurement.
I know Flexy has started using that measurement on his XJ, as well as a
couple TJ's he worked on at Kong's. It's pretty damn close.

James,
For a trail fix or similar repair, I fully agree that your method would be
more than adequate. While I no longer use the stock drag link and tie rod,
I still carry a spare stock TJ tie rod in case someone else on the trail
gets in a bind and needs one (same for the TRE as well). Having your
measurement when reassembling that tie rod would work very well.
However, as you indicated, your tires are experiencing some wear issues
where mine are not, and there in lies the difference between properly
setting the toe-in and getting it close. At best, the majority of people
who use the tie rod method will simply get it close, based on a general
measurement, and they too will experience tire wear, IMO. There would
probably be a bell curve representation of just how well everyone go it (and
I am ALWAYS way out on the end of the those curves!) LOL
I originally tried using the method JoeW commented on, but my tire lugs are
too chewed up to get the needed 1/8" accuracy. I feel confident that I use
that method on my car. I scribe a line with an center punch, directly on
the tread blocks, and have found that method works the best for me. I'm
sure others have their favorite methods too. IIRC, DougB use to have a set
of spare rims that he put on his TJ and used them to set the toe-in.
I remember last spring's trip to Moab (which for me this spring is just mere
7 days away) when we ran the Golden Spike trail. My group had just made it
across the Golden Crack and I asked the YJ driver behind us if he wanted me
to spot him across. He politely blew me off (his choice, as it should be)
and the proceeded to fold his drag link like a stressed Totsie Roll. At
that point in time, I am thinking the very last think on his mind was if he
could get his toe to be an 1/8" once he figured out a fix for the problem.
LOL
Anyway, I'll send you a measurement this weekend if I can remember to do it.

Subject: [az_vjc] TJ Steering question, I need a measurement
Can someone please measure the distance from the center of tie rod end to
the center of tie rod end, on a aligned stock D30 from a TJ for me? This
should be fairly easy, albiet maybe messy, to measure from grease zert to
grease zert.
After everyone gets their measurement to me I can post the general consensus
for future referrence.

These are in excellent shape. They are 5 on 4.5" with around 4.25 inches of backspacing which keeps the tires tucked under the flares of a TJ. He was running 33's with them.

Tranny fluid starvation or airation.
Either because the automatic transmision fluid is low and/or the grade that you're sitting on is too steep for the shallow tranny pan.. The fluid runs to the rear, away from the pickup.. Check the fluid level (when warmed up, on level ground, engine running, in neutral)... Make sure it's not low.. Consider adding a deep pan .

Are there still tires on it? If so I would think it wouldn't be that
bad to get a bunch of people to flip it back on it's wheels and pull it

it's not like we're worried about damaging the Chevy. :-)
We should probably get it out of there soon before somebody torches it.

Stu,
I understand what you are saying and it does make sense.

I realize that taking one measuremet from the tie rod is easier than

showed me), but I just don't think one will be able to accurately determine
(and thus reproduce) that measrurement from person to person/vehicle to

Anyone else want to take a shot at this? This has the makings of a good

James,
Measure toe-in as follows:
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Hey James,
My XJ is 50.5" from inside of one knuckle to the inside of the other. From
center of hole to center of hole, it's 52". I never use the tires to check
toe, I always use the 50.5" knuckle to knuckle measurement.
I know Flexy has started using that measurement on his XJ, as well as a
couple TJ's he worked on at Kong's. It's pretty damn close.

Are there still tires on it? If so I would think it wouldn't be that
bad to get a bunch of people to flip it back on it's wheels and pull it

We should probably get it out of there soon before somebody torches it.

James,
For a trail fix or similar repair, I fully agree that your method would be
more than adequate.

Stu,
I understand what you are saying and it does make sense.
