I'm thinking about getting a YJ and had a few questions... I'd like a 4.0L fuel injected. Also would prefer an auto with o/d, if available. What years would I be looking for? Anywhere I could find the year/option list? My XJ is ok but miss the open air.

Please don't do April 27........... just found out today that the State
Land Dept. has "bent against the will of the State Parks" and has authorized
Tammy Pike to go ahead and complete 4 of the 8-9 projects she had in the
works. Her original contract was through June 30 but after State Parks
"threw us (the OHV Fund) to the wolves to try settling the state deficit,
she was given 45 days notice and told "whatever monies she had not actually
paid out to date must be returned". Didn't matter there were numerous
projects in mid stream and money had been expended but would not be
reimbursed. As a result of all your letters to the legislators regarding
the OHV Gas Tax Money, there was a bit of pressure put on the Land Dept.
The result was allowing Tammy the funds to complete 4 of the projects in
action. Now one of the BIG issues to gathering enough support and help to
enable Tammy to complete these projects before she's out the door due to ALL
her funding being "thrown" to the State budget!

One is building kiosks and placing "route signs" at the M.P. 201 in Gold
Canyon just east of Apache junction........ another one is the preserve
lands at Pima and Dynamite in Scottsdale; one is restoring the 50 Year Trail
in Tucson and one is the re-opening of a beautiful canyon in the Kingman
area for 4x4 use. I know this is last minute but Tammy is busting her butt
to complete these projects before "she's out the door on May 1". We MUST
step up to the challenge and help her complete these projects. The "final
reflection" of these projects may well be the answer to KEEPING THE OHV GAS
TAX MONIES FOR OUR FUTURE USE. It sounds as though they will be needing
2-3 workers Tues - Friday next week to set up the "pre-kiosks"
etc........... 6-10 guys on Saturday and Sunday.

Any "takers"??????

I'll know more following our meeting on Monday afternoon. The signs and
kiosk materials have been ordered so now we play the "waiting game" for
their arrival...

Heck yeah. I was just going to reply asking why they don't ask for our help
for man power but I just needed to keep reading. I *might* be here on the
26th and if so I'll be happy to help. I don't know why putting up signs has
to be so darned expensive after all. I bet we can give them free labor and
all they need to pay for is the signs and I guess someone to come out and
babysit.

I have a 95 wrangler, yesterday got the oil changed and noticed that
the elbow off the fuel filter was cracked. I went to several
different places to get this part and no one had them. I am asuming
that this is something that I would have to go to Jeep for. Right
now I just have 3/8 hose in place of the elbow. The big concern is
that I am worried about the fuel supply getting cut off due to the
angle it is at. Any advise would be great.

Nick the problem is that the line is right above the filter. A short
hose would kink I think. Is there a way to adjust the placement of
the filter? If there is that might be the easyest way to solve the
problem.

Take your route of choice across town to get to Cave Creek
Road in Carefree. Most likely you will either take Carefree
Highway from the west turning onto northbound Scottsdale Road
(which may be called Tom Darlington Way), or Scottsdale Road
from the south, or the 101 from the south exiting onto
northbound Pima Road.

All of these routes get you to Cave Creek Road heading east
out of Carefree. Follow Cave Creek Road east until you reach
the intersection with Bartlett Dam Road. Take Bartlett Dam
Road all the way to the pay station (about 14 miles?).

If you need specific instructions from your specific location,
email me offline. But I will only be checking my email until
about 3:45pm today.

James,

Welcome to the issues surrounding the local (as in close to the valley)
recreation areas. While areas located further from the metro areas have
their problems too, the ones that are 30 minutes away seem to suffer the
worst.

To answer your question....yes, that area has been cleaned up by the AZVJC.
It gets heavy use from non-OHV people (beer drinking under age kids) and
from 4x4 users who don't have a clue as to proper land use. On any given
weekend, you will see pickups, SUVs, quads, 4x4s of all varieties, horses,
motorcycles, target shooters, etc. On top of this, it is a popular location
for people to do illegal dumping as it is close to town and now even has its
very own freeway off-ramp for easy access.

As a newbie, I got my first look at this area today, and was absolutely
appalled. I could not believe the amount of debris that I had to dodge
while navigating the surroundings, much of it potentially destructive to
tires or worse. Has there ever been a cleanup in this area? I realize that
it is not a cheap or easy proposition to get a dumpster dropped whenever you
want, but I would think that a group of people with some trash bags and a
couple pickup trucks could make a significant improvement in areas like
these, especially if it is an area used for teaching new folks the ropes.
Thoughts?

James,

The further you move away from the tire surface, the more difficult it is to
get an accurate measurement, since the resoulution of the measuring device
(and the ability to accurately repeat it) must become progressively better
and better.

For example, my TJ with 35" tires, when properly aligned, has a fat 1/8"
difference between the front surface and rear surface of the tire, when both
surfaces are measured and the front measurement is subtracted from the rear
mesasurement (for toe-in). As you move the reference point for measuring
from the tire surface to the tie rod (bascially moving more towards the
center of the tire), getting an accurate measurement there, and being able
to reproduce it, becomes more and more of a challenge, IMO.

I realize that taking one measuremet from the tie rod is easier than
scribing a line on the front tires and then measuring them (the way FlexyXJ
showed me), but I just don't think one will be able to accurately determine
(and thus reproduce) that measrurement from person to person/vehicle to
vehicle. Look at it this way......how much would the measurement differ, at
the tie rod, if I set my TJ's toe to 1/4"? While this would be nearly twice
the desired toe, I am betting you will hardly notice the difference at the
tie rod.

Anyone else want to take a shot at this? This has the makings of a good
discussion thread, IMO.

I know that county sheriff has a program to try to catch illegal dumpers.
Maybe we should invite some sheriff's along to help out with the cleanup,
make it a media event, and invite anyone else who is out there on
the rec vehicles to pitch in.

James,

Measure toe-in as follows:

Measure the distance from the outer tread to outer tread on the front edge
of the front tires (the 9 o-clock position as you are facing the rim of the
tire in question).

Measure the distance from the outer tread to outer tread on the rear edge of
the front tires (the 3 o-clock position as you are facing the rim of the
tire in question).

Subtract the front edge measurement from the rear edge measurement and you
will have the toe-in number. If the number is negative, you are toed out.

The one area of caution is that you MAKE SURE that the tread you are
measuring from is the same tread on BOTH tires. My swampers have outer
treads that are placed differently and I will get bad results if I use an
"inner" outer tread mixed with an "outer" outer tread. In other words,
measure from the EXACT same point on both tires when you make your
measurements.

If you have questions... come on over and I'll help you... it will take
about 20 minutes.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Board votes to rename mountain after fallen soldier

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- After prodding from the governor, a state
board Thursday decided to rename a prominent mountain peak after an
American Indian servicewoman killed in Iraq.

Some members of the Arizona Geographic and Historic Names Board had
resisted Gov. Janet Napolitano's push to rename Squaw Peak in honor of
Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, noting that federal policy requires that
people be dead five years before their names can be used on geographic
features.

But one critic resigned and chairman Tim J. Norton -- whose
resignation Napolitano had sought -- was a no-show when the rest of
the board voted 5-1 to rename the Phoenix landmark Piestewa Peak.

State maps and records are affected by the decision, which also serves
as a recommendation to a national board to change the name on federal
maps and documents.

"For the purposes of Arizona, the name is Piestewa Peak," said Tim
Nelson, general counsel for the Democratic governor.

Piestewa, a Hopi from Tuba City in northern Arizona, is the only
American servicewoman to die in the war. She was among nine members of
the Army's 507th Maintenance Company killed when their unit made a
wrong turn near Nasiriyah and drove into an ambush March 23. Six
members of the 507th were taken prisoner but ultimately rescued.

In renaming Squaw Peak, Napolitano sought to honor Piestewa while
removing a name many Indians find offensive. Indian lawmakers and
others had tried repeatedly to remove the word "squaw" from the names
of Arizona landmarks but failed to garner enough support.
The Arizona Geographic and Historic Names Board voted to change the
name of Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak.

"Lori's legacy will live on," said Delia Carlyle, vice chairwoman of
the AK-Chin Indian Community about 60 miles south of Phoenix.

Lloyd Clark, the only member on the state board to vote against the
change, said the point of the waiting period is to let emotions settle
before making a decision.

Richard Pinkerton resigned from the board Thursday after 19 years of
service, saying he refused to "prostitute my integrity in the interest
of satisfying a certain political venue."

In his resignation letter, Pinkerton said the board should not be at
"the governor's beck and call."

Napolitano asked Norton for his resignation after he resisted her
proposal and called wholesale name changes an "atrocity."

The board Thursday also gave its blessing to naming the Squaw Peak
Freeway after Piestewa. The state's transportation board is set to
decide whether to rename the roadway next month.

Piestawa reminds me of "pistachio", so why don't we
go halfway and rename it "Pistachio Peak" ?

It is quite a ridiculous way to honor "wrong place wrong time" While I do
respect fallen soldiers and what they have given up for me. This is insanity
what a bandwagon fad way to gain minority voter's approval! A waste of time
money and there is talk of the groups who do the cleanups are going to
abandon it in protest. I may seem harsh and insensitive but this truly is
ridiculous...
