Here's what Sandee posted in reply to my question about state
land permits a few months ago:
Here you go........... State Land Rec Permits are $15.00 for an
individual and $20.00 for a family (mom, pop & minor kids)
This permit is good for one year from the date of purchase and it
enables access to 8.5 million acres of State Trust Lands. Most
likely you've been on State Trust Lands many times when
outside the city limits. Almost all of BLM lands (Public) are
landlocked within State Trust Lands......... Some Forest lands
deal with State Trust lands but not nearly as much as BLM.
Sandee
State Land Permits are available:
Driven Auto Parts, 225 S. 35th Avenue, Phoenix 85005,
602.269.3969
Public Land Information Center, 222 N. Central, Phoenix, 85004

Greg, the reason nobody uses buick for conversions is that the parts are not as common as chevy, you have to use a buick transmission or run an adapter, the heads are different and of definitly more pricey, the transmission you will have to get a chevy 4wd tailhousing to mate to the buick transmission, So to tell you the truth you should get a chevy motor, the parts are the same for the 4.3 and the 262-400 small blocks and any of the transmissions mate right up! The Buick 350, 400, and 455 have the same exterior physical dimensions.
(There is no "small" or "big" block Buick). The transmissions use
the B.O.P. (Buick - Olds - Pontiac) bell housing bolt pattern. If you
already have all the accessories and exhaust set up for a Buick engine,
I can't really see a reason to change it.
True, everybody else does the Chevy swap. All the more reason to do
something different! :-) Plus, the Buick 455 is a torque monster!

P.S. The irony of me suggesting this is that I have a Chevy engine in

Bill,
Not too sure about those on Josh's. It doesn't look
like they do a whole lot for impact from the
underside. I wanna stop the damage before it gets to
the rocker pannels. I had the factory ones and they
didn't hold up at all. I probably will go with a 3/16
tube and maybe use the factory holes or a frame
bracket so I can take them off after I wreck them
again. I probably won't head off road much till I get
back to AZ so I will probably get back to you on the
help thing and we can discuss a re-design thing maybe
since I need them more for getting in and out than I
do to stop a rock from trying to get through.

You would be better off going to a selectable locker in the front. The
reason being the D30 with low gears, big tires and full time locker will
break axels and U-joints when turning on hard surfaces like rocks. With a
selectable locker you can unlock the front when in those condition and
general safe your self from breaking. The other thing to think about is if
you must go with a full time locker in the front then you should up grade
the axels to alloy with the 297x U-joints.

Hell... I'll go down to the state office, pick up the forms and hand deliver
them to 4 Wheeler's Supply and the rest of the 4WD houses on the East Side

What would be even COOLER is if we could take care of this online... like we

are no collection costs and the money is in the state fund with little to no
work.
Anyone have any idea who I can contact about this?

Hell... I'll go down to the state office, pick up the forms and hand deliver
them to 4 Wheeler's Supply and the rest of the 4WD houses on the East Side
of town.
What would be even COOLER is if we could take care of this online... like we
can our automobile registration... then you just print out the form, there
are no collection costs and the money is in the state fund with little to no
work.
Anyone have any idea who I can contact about this?
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Wow, now this is an oxymoron.
What are they, the State, doing with money we give them. You can't
tell me it cost more than $15-20 to print one permit. I think
someone needs to talk with Tammy Pike about this, maybe there needs
to be another letter writing campaign.

When Jess and I got sideswipped a couple of Sundays ago the rear
driver's side tire took most of the hit. The bodyshop bill will come
to about $1700 for the paint and a new wheel, but they have not told
me if the axle is bent. Tires/wheels/axles are not meant to be hit
from the side. The shop is telling me that when the Jeep goes to
alignment then they will be able to tell if the axle is bent.
Shouldn't they pull the axle and take a look at it?? What if the
gears in the rear end are out of whack or the drive shaft?? Anyone
know or care to venture a guess as to how bent an axle has to be
before it is considered to have to be replaced?? I do not want to
have to take the Jeep in for an alignment every 6 months or so. Any

Matt,
I think the Powertrax No-slip will pretty closely meet your
requirements. I'm in the process of installing one now (a really
easy job if you get the right parts). I've read LOTS of reviews on
this thing and everything I've read said its great and has very little
effect on normal street operation (althought it does somewhat).
There's no other product that even comes close to meeting this. Of
course, the best choice is an air locker but those are expensive and
are complicated to install (i.e. probably needs to be done by a pro
and that's not cheap). The No-slip can be had for $350 and can be
installed in a couple of hours by anyone with some basic mechanical
skills (it's really a piece of cake to install). Also its very
durable and is made of Zytanium which is 40% harder than Titanium!
Do some research on the No-slip and I think you'll find alot of very
positive comments out there on the web about it!
I'm kind of disappointed with their customer service over a minor
innocent I had but I still think its a great product.

Not too sure about those on Josh's. It doesn't look
like they do a whole lot for impact from the

the rocker pannels. I had the factory ones and they
didn't hold up at all. I probably will go with a 3/16
tube and maybe use the factory holes or a frame
bracket so I can take them off after I wreck them
again. I probably won't head off road much till I get

since I need them more for getting in and out than I
do to stop a rock from trying to get through.

reason being the D30 with low gears, big tires and full time locker will
break axels and U-joints when turning on hard surfaces like rocks. With a

general safe your self from breaking. The other thing to think about is if
you must go with a full time locker in the front then you should up grade
the axels to alloy with the 297x U-joints.

garage if that marker outline of the legs is still on the floor. LOL
Apart from the up angle of the spreaders, what else did y'all change?

Wow, now this is an oxymoron.
What are they, the State, doing with money we give them. You can't
tell me it cost more than $15-20 to print one permit. I think
someone needs to talk with Tammy Pike about this, maybe there needs
to be another letter writing campaign.

No. There is no such thing. The only locker that will do that is a
selectable locker.

James,
I agree whole heartedly!
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Joe, and others,
I did a bit a searching, you can order a permit over the phone by calling
(602)364-2753.
I know this will not be easy for everyone, but it is an option.

Subject: Accident question.....
Any
info would be appreciated. Thanks!! Shawn.

Subject: Re: LOCKERS
Matt,
I think the Powertrax No-slip will pretty closely meet your
requirements.
