Subject: Update on progress of my sons CJ and THANKS
I wanted to thank those of you that send kind letters, cards, packages, etc to my son who is a Marine serving in Iraq. I got a letter from him the other day that among other things said he is in a combat patrol and he drives around the desert all day chasing camels in his Humvee......he then said he would rather be chasing camels in a real 4x4, a CJ7, preferably his :-).....oh yeah, they havent taken any showers in 3 weeks and the latrines they have at base camp are getting "ripe".
Those of you that remember, when he left, he asked me to tow his Jeep home from Camp LeJeune and work on it while he was gone. The list included a new tranny (his old tranny was rebuilt 6 months ago using an Auto Zone rebuild kit and done professionally by a tranny shop, he also had them install a new Auto Zone torque converter. The torque converter went bad and the tranny ingested metal from the inside of the TC and it is toast. Auto Zone is NOT being very cooperative in this matter at all), YJ body tub, SOA, 35's, gears, locker and one piece axles.
I picked up an absolutely beautiful 94 Wrangler tub without a scratch on it last week for the paltry sum of $400. This weekend two of his high school buddies came over and we completely removed the interior, dash, etc and got it down to the frame.......I have attached a picture for those of you that might want to see it. Today we pressure washed and degreased the frame, tomorrow we will sand blast it where necessary then spray and coat it before we install the new tub. When that is done the next project will be the SOA, 35's and one piece axles.......the final task will be gears and lockers (or maybe the next as I have the gears already)
Anyway, I will keep the group posted on progress.
I WANT TO PERSONALLY THANK THOSE OF YOU THAT GENEROUSLY SENT MONEY TO AN UNOFFICIAL FUND FOR HIS JEEP MODS AND TO THE ONE MEMBER WHO SEND A CHECK FOR $100.
If anyone knows where I can pick up any one piece axles for a 1985 CJ7 model 20 axles fairly reasonably or spring perches for an Dana 30 and Model 20 axle, email me off post please.
THANKS !
Mike

For sure, the height will change.....by some 60 to 70 feet (maybe it is
more) between summer and winter (they fill it all winter and drain it
all summer). Parts that are completely under water this time of year
will be hundreds of yards away from the nearest water by the end of
summer.

Hello All,
Ray Backstrom lead a trail run Sunday, April 13, 2003 across Martinez Cabin
Well, not much to say. Ran into a couple trying to find their way to the Coke Ovens via Box Canyon- alone in a stock XJ. I recommended a different route, and told them about the Cabins and they decided to join us. Nice drive out, spent about an hour around the cabins, and headed home. Nice run, no problems and BEAUTIFUL weather. Will try to post the next one with a bit more notice :-)

And remember, rattlesnakes are lady and gentlemen snakes
and they generally won't bite you unless you step on one
or put your hand into a bush where one happens to be
shading itself. On the other hand (according to Robert
Heinlein), the African Green Mamba has been known
to chase a man on horseback, jump up and bite him,
and kill him. Mamba bites are generally and quickly
fatal. Just a little factoid if we ever happen to do
a run in Africa. =)

Kyle,
I'd start by checking all the bolts on Mike's side of the Jeep! Haha! Yeah, very possible that we left something loose under there as we were all getting really tired. I know for sure that the track-bar bolt on my side (drivers) was still loose late into the project. We had left it loose to help line the other side up. I don't remember getting back to it.
And glad Mike found your wrench. Was dumb luck that I was checking emails and was just about to go look thru my tool bag when I saw his reply.

Kyle,
I would agree with Stu, when I put your rear drive shaft in it looked fine. I would check those control arm bolts again since we had to remove them a second time to get the track bar on. As I suggested that night you may want to go through all of the bolts and double check them since we finished so late (or early depending on how you look at it).
I also checked my tool box and I did come back with and extra 3/8" ratchet, I can drop it off Sunday evening if that is ok? Otherwise e-mail me off-list and I can give you directions to my house and I can leave it somewhere you can grab it (I will be gone all day on Sunday). Sorry, must have been thrown in with my stuff during the late cleanup :)

Kyle..if you are the member that just swapped out the entire rear axle on his TJ..there is a pretty good chance that you might have a loose control arm bolt. This is a common cause of clunking, as the control arm moves a bit in the bracket when you apply gas or hit the brakes. I've also had clunks from a loose sway bar bolt (those can be amazingly noisy too).
All drives hafts can be slightly rotated..that is normal. If you have a rear automatic locker, they can rotate up to an 1/8 of a turn, and that is still normal for them.

I got my new rear in after the carnage. But I now have a clanking when I put pressure on the rear and again when I let off the gas. I crawled under it and I can move the drive shaft a small amount by hand. Its a very small amount but Im pretty sure its the cause. Is this normal? Something to worry about? What should I do? I dont remember it before the carnage.

THANKS !
Mike

Lake Pleasant will always be full, unless the Colorado dries up.
It's a reservoir for the CAP Canal, and water from the canal
is pumped UP into the lake. Of course, there may be minor
variations in lake height...

Anyway, it is that time of year and they appear to be out,
