Subject: Sharing lesson learned...

Okay, I'm sure most of you will say "duh, of course you should always
do that" but I'll go ahead and share some very basic advice anyways;)

Lesson learned: When you order a kit/part/component ALWAYS verify
that what you recieved is actually what you ordered even if that
means you have to do a little online research on a part number.

I recently purchased a Powertrax No-slip for my 2001 TJ. When I
ordered it I specifically told them it was for a 2001 TJ with a Dana
35 c-clip version open differential with no ABS. Having done some
research beforehand I knew that these were all important for this
particular product. When I got the kit several days ago I read thru
the manual, etc getting ready for the install today. The manual also
suggested checking to make sure you had the correct kit and that it
would clearly be labeled on the box. Well the only thing it had was
a part number and the manual didn't include any look up table so I
just made a leap of faith (something I rarely do) that I was shipped
the correct version. Well after tearing apart my rear differential
things seemed to be proceeding well and I was happy with the ease of
the install. That is until I got to a step where I had to slide the
axle c-clip (this c-clip was in the old diff and not part of the kit)
thru a kit supplied slotted spacer onto the axle. Well the slot is
too small and the c-clip simply won't fit thru it onto the axle.

Since it's Saturday everything is closed and I'm stuck with a vehicle
that's tore apart and I can't order the correct part until Monday.
I'm not going to put the old diff back together and I hope I can get
the correct part shipped overnight and have by Tuesday. Also I just
did a little research on the part number stamped on the box and it
turns out that I got the version for a Jeep with ABS which mine
doesn't have. I'm not sure what other differences there are in the
diff of a Jeep with ABS and one without but it seems as if the c-clip
is a different size.

Luckily we have another vehicle but I'm mainly ticked because I had
plans to do Upper Woodpecker tomorrow and now I had to cancel that
since I don't want to put the old diff back together only to tear it
apart again in a few days.

Anyways, just a reminder to always verify that you have the correct
parts BEFORE you start a job. Don't do like I did and verify them
AFTER you realize something is wrong! Duh!

Subject: Dana 35 c-clip + ABS question

I just failed in my attempt to install a new Powertrax No-slip on the
rear Dana 35c open differential for my 2001 TJ without ABS.
Everything was proceeding as planned until I got to a step where I
had to reinstall the c-clips but now thru a slot in one of the no-
slip components (what they call an active spacer). The problem is
that the c-clip is just too large for the slot (diameter wise) and
there's no way to get it thru. I tried calling Powertrax but they're
closed on the weekends so I'm screwed for the moment. I just
finished looking into the part number of the kit that I was shipped
and it's for the version for ABS. My Jeep does not have ABS and I
told them that when I ordered it. When I saw this error I just
assumed this was what happened; however, I've now read that just
because your Jeep doesn't have ABS doesn't mean that the differential
doesn't have the hardware for one with ABS. So now I'm not too sure
what's going on.

Does anyone now what's the difference between a Dana-35c with ABS
hardware and one without? Any chance the ABS version has smaller c-
clips?

Thanks,
John Teel

Kyle&.if you are the member that just swapped out the entire rear axle on his TJ&.there is a pretty good chance that you might have a loose control arm bolt. This is a common cause of clunking, as the control arm moves a bit in the bracket when you apply gas or hit the brakes. Ive also had clunks from a loose sway bar bolt (those can be amazingly noisy too).

All drives hafts can be slightly rotated&.that is normal. If you have a rear automatic locker, they can rotate up to an 1/8 of a turn, and that is still normal for them.

I finally bought a new rear receiver bumper/tire carrier for my YJ (thanks Damon!) and I can finally get rid of that low-hanging uhaul hitch. Can someone please tell me how to get those bumperette bolts off so I can put this on? Does one actually have to drop the tank in order to access the nuts behind the crossmember? In fact, is anyone available tomorrow who knows how to do this who could help me install this sucker? I'm in Chandler (Alma School and Elliot) and would be happy to grill up some burgers or something if someone could spend an hour or less helping me with this thing. I only want to install the bumper at this time - I'll be leaving the tire carrier off for now.

I had the same problem with my 8 & am much happier with the spare
mounted inside the tub. It doesn't get hung up anymore & the rig
feels more balanced.
I mounted it at the same angle & kinda inside of the back of my
cage so if (when) I go end over backwards the spare won't get broken
off & forced into the kids in the back seats. With a 37" spare & 10
gallon air tank the space back there is pretty tight. I still have
room for all my spares, tools, & coolers. You just have to get
creative on your storage. If your not running back seats than you
should have all the room in the world.
I'm not able to send pictures until Monday. But if you'd like to see
it shoot me an e-mail I'm in Scottsdale.

Subject: Powertrax No-slip and/or Dana 35c measurement request?

Okay, sorry to beat a dead horse (this is my third post now about
this) but this is driving me crazy. I tried to install a Powertrax
No-slip today in my TJ with Dana 35c Open diff and the slots in the
active spacers are too small for the axle c-clips. The slot in the
slotted driver is just fine but the slots in both active spacers are
way too small (diameter wise). I've verified that I did receieve the
correct kit for this differential. Well the part # is correct but
obviously some of the components are not correct for this model.
Anyways, Powertrax is closed on the weekend and its driving me crazy
trying to figure out what's wrong. The only things I can think of
are that these active spacers are for a different differential that
uses smaller c-clips, the c-clips on my Dana 35c are larger than
normal, or their was a machining problem that they didn't catch.

So anyways, I'm curious if anyone out there has either a Powertrax No-
slip for a Dana 35c and/or a Dana 35c c-clip that you can easily take
a measurement on. No I'm not asking you to go tear apart your
differential (although that would be aweful nice of you! hahaha) but
if you have an uninstalled one laying around I sure would appreciate
it if you would take a measurement:

1.) Dana 35c C-Clip Dimension: The diameter of the c-clip. I measure
mine at 1-3/8"

1.) Powertrax No-slip Dimension: The diameter of the slot in either
of the active spacers. There's really two ways to measure this slot
diameter. This slot is not the same width for the entire length
because the ends of the slot are kind of rounded so the two ends are
not as wide as the middle section. On mine I measure the full length
(including the rounded end sections) to be 1-7/16". This sounds fine
and dandy becuase its larger than the above dimension for the c-
clip. However, if you don't include the narrow rounded end sections
then I only measure 1-5/16" and that's where the problem lies. The c-
clip can't fit thru the slot because of the narrow rounded end
sections. It's just shy of about 1/16" of fitting. The above
dimensions are of the diameter but if you prefer I guess you can
measure the circumference (the slot is on a circular component) which
I measure to be 1-3/4" which includes the rounded end sections.
Anyways, any of the above will be fine as long as you specify which
way you measured.

Anyways, I realize the odds are that none of you have either of these
uninstalled currently in your possesion but I thought I'd ask
anyways. Sure I'll find out the problem Monday when I call Powertrax
(which I hear has great customer service) but I want to know now!

It's kind of funny because I emailed Powertrax last night before I
started the install suggesting that they really needed to have
weekend and weekday evening tech support (they only have M-F 9-5
support) since most people probably do the installs during these
times. I really didn't think I'd need their help but I do. I've
never understood places that seem to keep hours that are convenient
for their employees and not for the largest majority of their
customers. Granted I love having weekends off and I understand that
but I don't work in a customer service field.

Kyle,

I would agree with Stu, when I put your rear drive shaft in it looked fine. I would check those control arm bolts again since we had to remove them a second time to get the track bar on. As I suggested that night you may want to go through all of the bolts and double check them since we finished so late (or early depending on how you look at it).

I also checked my tool box and I did come back with and extra 3/8" ratchet, I can drop it off Sunday evening if that is ok? Otherwise e-mail me off-list and I can give you directions to my house and I can leave it somewhere you can grab it (I will be gone all day on Sunday). Sorry, must have been thrown in with my stuff during the late cleanup :)

Stubby bumpers are great if fenders are of no value to you. Since creating a
stubby out of my bumper I have hit and then cut the fenders a few times. An
alternative I have seen is a bumper that is essentially a stubby with fender
protectors. I know the Toys by Troy front bumper like Stu has provides both
functions.
