And what is wrong with the axel disconnect??? :) I actually think that
it is the strongest part of the front axel. I guess the only problems I
have heard is the reliability of the vacuum and the shift fork. Which I
have not had a problem with either and are both over come with a cable
actuator and a cast iron (instead of aluminum) fork.
Now if you are going larger then 33's you will need alloy shafts and
larger u-joints. I have been running my setup D30, 33x12.5 MTR and a
lockrite locker for over a year now with no issues. (knock, knock, knock

My factory header developed a large crack and I was wondering who makes the best header in all around performance for the $. I don't mind paying more if it is worth it but I don't want to pay extra for some companies name. Any input is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!!!

to regear with 4.56 and add a locker and change the rear axles in the 8.25
to the 30 spline. any suggestions as to where to get the parts? And is
there a difference between gears manufactures? And what choices for locker
do I have with the 8.25?

Subject: RE: axles & Gears
Dave, the larger 8.25 axle is a 29 spline found in, I thought, 96 and later
XJ's. Are you sure you don't already have the 29 spline?? If so, that's a
plenty strong axle, as I run a 27 spline, and run 4.5 trails and higher 3-4
times a month. The only one I broke was a Yukon shaft on Axle Alley. Oh ya,
I run 33's.
I run a No-Slip in the rear. It works alright, although I keep breaking the
springs inside. I believe you can get a Detroit and possibly the ARB.
Yes, there is a difference in quality between manufacturers. You get what
you pay for. I believe mine are Superior Gears.
Happy Trails,
Rick

i have run all three of the trails, actually, even the fourth one, battle
axe. i would recommend doing box canyon from 79 and then going on to the
coke ovens. its way more fun than coming from 60. you start at the end of
the canyon and go inward. the trail for the coke ovens is pretty rough, but
i would definitely say that it is worth it. i would suppose that all three
could be done in one day, assuming that you start around 8:30-9:00. if you
guys are interested in going tomorrow, sunday april 13, i would definitely
meet you guys out there. i am coming from ASU, so i have a good 50 miles to
get out there, but let me know if you want to do it. i guess that i could
be a leader, but i have never lead and trails before. i have ran these
trails multiple times and i know them really well.
thats it

I'm a new member with a new cj8. My first 4x4 experience with my new vehicle I scraped my full size spare a few times. I knew I would scrape my rear a few times with a cj8, but my tire adds an even longer overhang. I'm not going to bob the vehicle but would like to know of some ways, or places to mount a spare. I run a full soft top when it is colder, and like the storage in the back. I am eventually going tok have a full cage made. Any ideas about mounting on roof or higher in the back to help with departure angles. Any suggestions would be helpful, sorry this took so long to explain.

Patrick,
The higher up you mount your spare (such as on a roof rack or roll cage) the more you raise your center of gravity (CG) which is not good.
Scott Kruize has a nice spare tire mount which he fabricated which keeps his CG as low as possible but doesn't take any storage space... he mounted it just over his tub in the back at an angle behind the seats. I can send you a picture of it if you'd like... just let me know. Just remember to mount the spare as LOW as possible to keep your CG low... leave room to mount bigger spares just in case you get the bug and want larger tires someday.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

have not had a problem with either and are both over come with a cable
actuator and a cast iron (instead of aluminum) fork.
Now if you are going larger then 33's you will need alloy shafts and
larger u-joints. I have been running my setup D30, 33x12.5 MTR and a
lockrite locker for over a year now with no issues. (knock, knock, knock
on wood)

My factory header developed a large crack and I was wondering who makes the best header in all around performance for the $. I don't mind paying more if it is worth it but I don't want to pay extra for some companies name. Any input is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!!!

Subject: axles & Gears
Hey guys
I have a 96 xj with a dana 30 up front and 8.25 in the rear. I am looking
to regear with 4.56 and add a locker and change the rear axles in the 8.25
to the 30 spline. any suggestions as to where to get the parts? And is
there a difference between gears manufactures? And what choices for locker
do I have with the 8.25?
TIA

Happy Trails,
Rick

Hi everyone,
I just signed up tonight and am excited to get started. I am
actually on my 2nd Jeep. My first was was an 1980 CJ7 had it until
about 4 years ago. Made the mistake of getting rid of it so I broke
down and bought a 2003 wrangler. The only problem is that I am
starting from scratch and it is all stock. That will change with
time though...
I am also on my 2nd Grand Cherokee, also recently bought a 2003.
Cant get enough of those either, (thats my wifes though)
Anyway excited to get started and go on a run sometime.

i have run all three of the trails, actually, even the fourth one, battle
axe. i would recommend doing box canyon from 79 and then going on to the
coke ovens. its way more fun than coming from 60. you start at the end of
the canyon and go inward. the trail for the coke ovens is pretty rough, but
i would definitely say that it is worth it. i would suppose that all three
could be done in one day, assuming that you start around 8:30-9:00. if you
guys are interested in going tomorrow, sunday april 13, i would definitely
meet you guys out there. i am coming from ASU, so i have a good 50 miles to
get out there, but let me know if you want to do it. i guess that i could
be a leader, but i have never lead and trails before. i have ran these
trails multiple times and i know them really well.
thats it

Subject: [Tech] 82 cj8 - alternate location for spare tire....any ideas?

Kind Regards,
Joe West
