Been there 5 times in March
Main problem was getting an EGR valve to work properly.
Needed three tries on them. That has been my main problem last time as
well.
Yours is fuel injection and has a better EGR setup then my 87 YJ.
Also know a great place to get it checked out.
Let me know if you want more information.

I see all the 8-9000 pounds sizes but is that needed for rock crawing
(excluding trying to climb waterfalls) I know mud needs alot of power but
for AZ do we need to carry that much weight and money around?

Subject: Blocked-off CCV effect on 02 sensor

I recently put a breather into my valve cover and plugged off the inlet to the air box thinking that I didn't want oil mist flowing through my throttle body and other points downstream. About a month later the check engine light is on, but I don't know why yet. What is the method to find out the scan codes?

Could this little mod mess up some sensor, or is it more likely to be related to this:

My speedo / odo are not working. I have seen a write-up somewhere on how to take apart the dash and slightly bend the connections to the instrument cluster to take care of this problem. I would love to see that again but can't find it -- anybody know?

Or is there some distance sensor that would shut these down after a recent tire swap?

Vehicle is a '00 TJ with the 2.5L with about 70k miles (I know... but a swap is not in the budget right now).

Hello All,

Scott Grigsby is leading a Woodpecker (Upper) trail run on Sunday, April 13, 2003.

When: SUN MORNING, 8:00am
Where: Meet at Florance JCT Texaco
Rating: 4.0+
Length: however long it takes
CB Channel: 4

I am putting new 4.88s in my jeep and hope to have them done by sat night. If for somereason I dont have them done I will have to cancell but I hope to have them done. Lets just have a nice day of wheelilng, nothing to hard, stockers are ok, lets just get together before it gets too hot,

Upper Woodpecker is a wash that runs to the Woodpecker Mine. Years ago this wash was the actual road from the mine. There have been many hours of fun playing and traversing on this trail. It offers rock ledges, cracks, "tippy spots" and is the home of the infamous "Fire Hole". It was one of the first "extreme" trails offered in Arizona.

Over the years this trail has seen the result of "rock stacking" and "ramp building" that has down rated the trail from a 4.5 to a 4.0 but it still has a number of "play areas" and lockers are still required for the harder portion of the trail.

Upon exiting the wash you will climb to the top of the hill where the mine is located. There is an amethyst pit mine near the entrance to the Woodpecker Mine where you will most likely find several "rock hounds" or mountain bikers.

Don't forget your lunch and water. This is one of the longer trails and is normally an all day trip.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

hey folks,

I'm debating on what to do about new side steps. I
like the look of the factory tube ones, but I want
something more durable. I have looked around and only
seen running boards. I was thinking about taking some
heavy duty tubing and just having it welded to the
frame, 1/4" thick should be enough to protect those
rocker pannels right? Any thoughts or ideas??

Don't be ashamed of your 2.5L. Do you need to go 90 mph on the way to the trail? Laugh at everyone at the gas pump. Rip that puppy out of there when she's on her last leg (like mine - soon). Sorry, I know nothing about your engine's codes.

Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Saturday, April 12, 2003 - Reminder

Hello All,

Greg Kenny is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, April 12, 2003.

When: 8:30 meet roll 9:00 am
Where: meet at cottonwood canyon rd. between FJ and Florence
Rating: 4.0+
Length: whatever
CB Channel: 4

Will probably do Jackhandle as a warm up first. If you've never run Martinez bring a camera.

Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.

Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.

The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.

A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.

As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.

The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"

This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

Subject: RE: state land permit

Andrew....you only need a STL(State Trust Land) permit if you are on
STL.

That being said, it is quite difficult to tell when you are on STL while
wheelin' since the trail can cross on to and off of STL and you would
never know. There are patches of STL all over the state....and probably
less than 1% of it MIGHT have a sign on some part of the trail (normally
the beginning).

As such, I encourage you, as I do all OHV users, to obtain a STL permit
and keep it in their Jeep's glovebox. In the years I have carried one,
I've never had to show it (but not everyone can make that claim). But I
view it as insurance....and we all know we only need insurance when we
don't have it. ;)

You probably won't find a STL permit at this time of day, as there are
only a few places that have them and they are most likely closed.

If you are in Lake Pleasant county park, you won't need a STL permit.

There are no other OHV permits for the state, other than one for some
trail out east, and that one is free....BullDog Canyon (or something
like that?) Never been there, don't exactly recall the name.

they don't have a local office). Unless you know they guy, I wouldn't
give him cash without the title (with a lien on it) and the vehicle.
Just my .02 worth.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Sunflower Mine Loop - Saturday, April 5, 2003

Hello All,

Brad Rogers lead a trail run Saturday, April 5, 2003 across Sunflower Mine Loop

Long trip but well worth the time. Once again the winch factor came into effect. Unfortunetly it wasn't mine. I ended up getting stuck in the mud hole but wasn't quick enough when getting to my winch control. Dan Sexson partnered up to give me hand and used his 8000lb Ramsey to get me out. It made for a good laugh after a rather long trip.

When we run it again, I think we will run it backwards instead of both front and backwards. Going down the trail is much more difficult than going up through the creek beds. Not sure why but for some reason the obstacles are a little more difficult to maneuver around when gravity is playing more of a role. Thank goodness for "Rock Gaurds."

Word to the wise: Make sure you don't follow any four wheeler trails, thinking that they go somewhere. Unfortunetly for us we followed one and left most of our paint in the wilderness among the branches along side of the path (sorry Dave). Nothing a little wax can't buff right out.

One heck of a time though. We had all TJ's on the trail with the exception of a CJ-7, which had more flex than most of our newer models. Long arm kits, locking diff's, winches and of course the fully loaded Rubicon's. They all performed perfect with the exception of my mud experience. I'll do better next time though. I kind of wanted to try out my winch but Dan beat me to it.

Well, good luck to all of you heading back to Sun Flower. The creek is still flowing but not for too much longer. To those of you who participated in the event; I had a good time and enjoyed all your company. Feel free to email me and give the envite to the next trip. Keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Brad Rogers 2000 TJ

Should my sway bar links look like this? They looked a bit off to me. Could this be the culprit of my clunking?

Bare with me...I haven't mastered the art of holding my new digital camera straight/steady.

Also, good points. But I dont even think of tow
points/straps/come-along/hi-lift/shovel/axe and good rubber as a
modification. Thats just smart preparation that everyone should have who
wheels. You could add first aid kit, water, and fire ext. to the list too
but they also arnt modifications. :)

The scary thing is that this isnt the first time Jeff's offered to do
a little wife swappin on this list..... LOL

Second thing is it must be the airborne ranger training or something,
cause a normal guy could fear his wife....shes tiny but I get the
feeling she has a good left hook! :)
