Yeah, Good points. But what triggered me from his question is if I
had to do it all over again. I have lifted my Jeep about 4 different
times, Had 4 sets of different size tires etc. If I were to do it
again, I would have bought a locker and some skid plates so I could
pretty much wheel anywhere clearance would allow..Then I would have
just saved up my money until I had the cash to build it right the
first time. I would have saved a TON of cash had I done that. :)
Next to taking off my sway bars, nothing made as noticable difference
as the lockers. IMO

I believe the dealer told him, he had to buy the whole light, they

I've had three Wranglers with different lifts and mods on each. It depends
on how much money you want to spend, I guess. I'd suggest the swaybar
disconnects as well as a telescoping trackbar for the front, if you have a
YJ. Those are a cheap way to increase offroadability. Now lockers would be
awesome if you can swing it. We're planning on swapping out our axle(s) so
I've put off lockers for now. Don't forget security - an open top Jeep needs
a Tuffy or other locking console or else expect your stuff to be
stolen...often.
Everyone will have different viewpoints on this. I don't think you'll get
any bad advice, just different advice.

Subject: Re. Muffler Shop in the East Valley
Mark,
I had good service from Mesa Muffler on Main St., just West of Country Club. Last Friday they re-routed the exhaust on my YJ (to cross over in front of the oil pan sump) and installed a muffler I had bought at Lopers. Very reasonalble on the rates, too.
The best part? I had bought a muffler (Flowmaster) with the wrong inlet/outlet set-up. Why? Because I was uhhhh...errr...cheap(!). It was the only config that Lopers carried the older, and less expensive, version of the Flowmaster. Didn't think it would be an issue, but it wouldn't fit under the Jeep.
I didn't have my receipt, a driveable vehicle and my wife was at work. So the guys at Mesa Muffler "upgraded" me to the newer version of the Flowmaster (with the correct offset this time!) for nothing. They just kept my original Flowmaster to sell to someone else. Pretty cool of them.
I had gotten a recommendation for Wade's as well, but he wanted twice the price for the muffler than Lopers. His work may be excellent, however.

PartsMike used to have an article about "should I get a winch or X?" where
X was lift, tires, lockers, whatever... His though was that "X," whatever
it was, was always just something to help you get stuck even more, where
only the winch would help you recover. Just food for thought.
Another thought: Safety. Stock "roll" bar, or sport bar, is not the
greatest. It is amazing how many built rigs you see with scary protection.
So...my list would be:
1. Real Roll Bar. (There are a number of fine routes to go on this one.)
2. Winch.
3. All the crap to help you get stuck in more interesting situations.

anyhow. i started out with disconnects (thx stu!!!) and it amazed me how
much more i could do. i have these real kewt little street balloon tires
that make my rig look like a "G-RIDE" but if i air them down and disconnect
the sway then i almost look like i know what im doin... next will be some
used all terrains till i can afford my lift. im lookin at doin a 6" RE or
tera. then some tires and some under body armor and then i can put the car
seats in to hold my little uns! next i will drop a locker in it and start
climbing curbs at the mall.
i figure completion at about 2399 AD.

The only problem with doing lockers first is the gears. What happens
when you go bigger tires, and different gears. Then the carrier most
likely will change, and you would have to buy another locker....
I would do lift, tires, armour. Start accumulating the 3, then put
it on at once. Then gears/lockers.
My opinion.

The only thing I would have done differently would have been to buy a
stock Jeep rather then one that was mildly built (31"tires and 3.5"
lift). Each step I took was a learning process. I did a lot of research
on all the mods I have done and did them as economically as possible.
As for a prefered order of building your Jeep.
1 Safety.
water
First aid
fire extinguisher
CB/FRS radio
vehicle fluids (oils, hydrolic...)
2 Recovery
Tow hooks
Tow strap
High lift jack
3 Protection
Bumpers
Rocker panel
4 Lift/tires
this amount depends on budget and desired result.
I'd start with ~3" lift 33" tires and offset wheels.
5 Accessories
OBA
off road/rock lights
~Extreme trail
6 safty
roll cage
stronger seatbelts or harnes
7 tools/repair equipment
Sockets and wrenches and misc. tools to make trail repairs.
8 Recovery
winch
9 Protection
Gas tank skid
corner guards
oil pan skid
diff cover skids
strengthen/relocate axel end shock mounts
10 traction devices
Rear locker
front locker
11 Spare parts
U-joints
Axels rear/front
tie rod and ends
12 more lift
CV drive shaft
Belly up skid plate
13 etc.

A lot of people put CB as one of the first things... is there a good way to
install a CB that won't interfere with future mods? (ie. different bumper,
heavy duty tire carrier)

Yeah, Good points. But what triggered me from his question is if I
had to do it all over again. I have lifted my Jeep about 4 different
times, Had 4 sets of different size tires etc. If I were to do it
again, I would have bought a locker and some skid plates so I could
pretty much wheel anywhere clearance would allow..Then I would have
just saved up my money until I had the cash to build it right the
first time. I would have saved a TON of cash had I done that. :)
Next to taking off my sway bars, nothing made as noticable difference
as the lockers. IMO

My opinion.

Subject: RE: Which mods first?
The only thing I would have done differently would have been to buy a
stock Jeep rather then one that was mildly built (31"tires and 3.5"
lift). Each step I took was a learning process. I did a lot of research
on all the mods I have done and did them as economically as possible.
As for a prefered order of building your Jeep.
1 Safety.
water
First aid
fire extinguisher
CB/FRS radio
vehicle fluids (oils, hydrolic...)
2 Recovery
Tow hooks
Tow strap
High lift jack
3 Protection
Bumpers
Rocker panel
4 Lift/tires
this amount depends on budget and desired result.
I'd start with ~3" lift 33" tires and offset wheels.
5 Accessories
OBA
off road/rock lights
~Extreme trail
6 safty
roll cage
stronger seatbelts or harnes
7 tools/repair equipment
Sockets and wrenches and misc. tools to make trail repairs.
8 Recovery
winch
9 Protection
Gas tank skid
corner guards
oil pan skid
diff cover skids
strengthen/relocate axel end shock mounts
10 traction devices
Rear locker
front locker
11 Spare parts
U-joints
Axels rear/front
tie rod and ends
12 more lift
CV drive shaft
Belly up skid plate
13 etc.

If you had to do it over, in what order would you make your mods
(starting from completely stock) and why? In case the rich people
decide to answer, please assume that you are on a normal working man's
budget.

That's awesome. Wives on the list - take this advice: you can never go wrong
with tools as a gift! :-)
You putting that 8.8 in a TJ or YJ?

A lot of people put CB as one of the first things... is there a good way to
install a CB that won't interfere with future mods? (ie. different bumper,
heavy duty tire carrier)

Ooh, that's some dangerous territory to tread on. Some of our wives read
this list.
