Guys,
The Box Canyon trail, and possible through to the Martinez Cabins is
very senic. More so that the Coke Ovens run.. Someone told me, a few weeks
ago, the the CO run is a little more difficult now, as the rains have washed
out the steps a fair amount.. At any rate, doing all three would make for a
very long day, especially for you John, coming from Tucson..
The Box Canyon run is really easy, and continuing on to the Martinez Cabins
is also easy.. The views are great.. Lots of red/orange rocks. Box Canyon is
neat, with it's towing, verticle walls and all.
You will need a State Trust Land permit. John, you can get that downtown at
the State Building (here in Tucson).. It's $15.00 (for a full year) for an
individual, or $20.00 for a family (immediate family only, which includes
the children and parents only).
The STL permit is *NOT* per vehicle, it's per person !! Every one, either
via an individual permit, or family permit, needs one.. Remember, the permit
is not for a vehicle to recreate on State Trust Land, but rather for a
person to recreate on State Trust Land.

Great pics James, thanx for posting those. And thanx to everyone on
the run, I had a gas. Appreciate the info I got from everyone, and
thanx for everyones patience will I was figuring out how to dirve the
new Jeep. 254 miles on the odometer and it already has its first
trail run under its belt.

Does anyone know where I can get some abrasives for restorative sandblasting? I considered silica sand, which I can get at Home Depot but I'd like to pay a bit more for something like Starblast XL which has almost no silica and much less dust. I've done some reading on sandblasting and I have some health concerns with using silica sand. I'm taking notes so anyone else here who wants to venture into sandblasting their rig might benefit from this info also.

Subject: Credit bureaus allowed to release credit info 7/1/03:

Just wanted to let everyone know who hasn't already heard, the four major credit bureaus in the US will be allowed, starting July 1, to release your credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to anyone who requests it. If you would like to 'opt out' of this release of your info, you can call 1-888-567-8688. It only takes a couple of minutes to do.

Once the message starts you'll choose option #2 (even though option #1 refers to this E-mail) and then option #3 - Be sure to listen closely, the first option is only for a two-year period. Make sure you wait until they prompt for the third option, which opts you out forever.

One thing more. It asks for your social security # at the end. Just press the # key. DO NOT ENTER YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY #

PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ALL IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK AND YOUR PERSONAL FRIENDS.

Since I don't have any D35 parts, I'll simply make a comment here. $300
for a complete axle is a good deal if the gears in it are what you need and
it is ready to drop into place. Labor for setting up gears runs $150 to
$300, depending on who you have do it. Add another $100 for a master
overhaul kit. You said the carrier and gears were both bad..been too long
since I priced those..you'll have to get a price on them yourself. Plus,
assuming your axle shafts are not bad, you will have a pair of spare shafts
(for free).

If the axle that Joe mentioned is literally plug and play, it is a pretty
good deal, IMO. My last plug and play axle was over $2000.

Hey Gang,

Looks like things aren't falling into place for Kyle yet... the axle I
had lined up for Kyle costs $300 and I just spoke to Kyle and he would
prefer to use donated used parts instead of having to spend $300 for a low
mileage complete axle (I don't own the axle in question; a friend of mine
does). Perhaps he can repair whatever is broken with less expense...

If you have D35 parts you can donate... please shoot Kyle an email and
let him know what you have... he is on his way home with the tow truck and
his rig.

Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Saturday, April 12, 2003 - Reminder

Hello All,

Greg Kenny is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, April 12, 2003.

When: 8:30 meet roll 9:00 am
Where: meet at cottonwood canyon rd. between FJ and Florence
Rating: 4.0+
Length: whatever
CB Channel: 4

Will probably do Jackhandle as a warm up first. If you've never run Martinez bring a camera.

Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.

Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.

The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.

A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.

As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.

The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"

This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

I thought the actual canyon was signed and closed due to private
property at the old mining area. Meaning you can go up to it, or up
and around the way you usually come out; but you can not cross the
private property.

Sandee? What is the real status of the canyon?

This is certainly not new news.. It's been discussed here, on the az_vcj
listserver close to a zillion times in the last year.. :)
Most of the trails in the Florence/Florence Jtn are, themselves, not on STL,
but you go through STL to get to them and therefore are required to have a
STL permit.. The fine is $500.00 for not having one.
It's also been posted here, a zillion times (ok a few times less), recently,
that the Sheriff, etc., has been cracking down out there for the last year
or so..
I haven't been done to the River anytime lately, so I really don't know how
deep it is now.

Best,
Fred

Guys,
The Box Canyon trail, and possible through to the Martinez Cabins is

:)
