My wife, Vanda, works for one of these companies. The small, privately owned business she has worked for a few years has recently been purchased by a corporation listed below. They seem to be a good company, and Vanda is real happy there. In fact, her pay has increased quite a bit since the buyout.

If everyone, or even many, were to boycott her company, she could quite possibly lose her job, or at least a good chunk of her paycheck.

I hate the French as much as the next guy, but hey, I NEED JEEP PARTS. Think about who may be losing by boycotting French companies. It just may be a red-blooded American jeeper trying to make a living.

Subject: Re: Front-wheel drive Jeep

Okay, I've taken the rear driveshaft off again so that I can take it
to the shop tomorrow to get it converted to a CV. I've drove it a
little more now in FWD and it does okay and it is certainly driveable
but does act strange. Sometimes it wants to pull a little bit but
actually it mostly seems to want to fight me turning. In other words
it likes to continue in the current direction whether that be
straight or turning. Also I can literally feel the front end pulling
instead of the rear end pushing (i.e. you can really tell the front
wheels are being driven and not the rear). It feels funny but you
can really tell that the front end is pulling when you accelerate and
the rear end seems to have a little lag time and you get this
floating kind of feeling. Very strange. I suspect the large tires
and lift just magnify any effects from being a FWD. All of this I'm
sure is completely normal. What's strange though is that when I turn
really sharp (only notice it during a u-turn) I hear a knocking noise
of some sort. I only noticed this once and didn't get a chance to
play with it to see what it was. And no I don't have a locker on the
front. I can't even imagine how ugly that would be to drive!

By this time tomorrow I hope to be vibration free. I'll be sure to
post the results because I'm taking a different route than most do to
fix the driveshaft induced vibrations. I'm installing a CV
driveshaft but without a SYE. Supposedly the kit that allows you to
mount the CV head to the existing slip-yoke output has only been out
a couple of years. I'll be interested to see if the CV alone
eliminates the vibes without reducing the driveshaft angle with the
SYE and longer driveshaft. If this works (and obviously I expect it
will) this will be a much easier fix than a SYE/CV combo (the price
is only slightly cheaper though).

Thanks,
John

I don't believe an across the board boycott is effective. I agree with the
harmless changes such as Freedom Fries, etc that get the point out that we
are upset but don't attack any particular business. But to boycott these
companies based upon what Chirac did would be unfair. I'm sure that
management of some of these firms disagree with Chirac and to harm them
would be to harm those in France that just might support us. Most businesses
are non-political in nature. Unless you have proof that one of these
companies was on the record as being against us I think this boycott is
ridiculous and at its worst may inspire new hatred towards Americans by
those same people that currently may support us.

Besides, Michelin makes some damn nice tires and happen to be my favorite
for daily driven vehicles. (Of course I'm keeping the Goodyear MTR's on the
Jeep). Should we all run out and put on some Firestones instead? LOL

That's still to rich for me. I'm thinking $280.00 per tire at most is all I want

If you want to bring it over, I'd be happy to take a look at it and see if we can find the problem. I live in Mesa.

Well everybody,

I took your advice and I stripped the front tires off and checked the brake pads...nothing abnormal. Made sure the tires were both on straight and the lugs were tight. My control arm bushings look pretty bad but I'm almost positive that's not what's causing the problem. I still have a consistant clunking sound, in the front right and possibly the front left, when at low speeds not braking or accelerating. I HAVE NO CLUE what's going on. There seems to be no rubbing of any parts. HELP! Anyone know where I can go to a "trusting" mechanic to have them check it out. I basically just need to find out what the problem is and then I should be able to fix it...hopefully. My Jeep's also idling VERY hard so I want to get that checked out as well. Duffy, do you do mechanic work? Anyone else? TIA...I appreciate it.

~Wade

A few days ago I noticed while idling I was hearing/feeling a weird clunk I think in the front. The sound/feeling is consistant with the wheels turning. This does not happen when I apply the brakes or gas and I only feel/hear it when going less than 10 mph. The day before this started happening I replaced my front brake pads, but I did nothing out of the ordinary. Any ideas what this might be or what to look for to find the culprit? TIA

Although I have been a member for about a year, I have subscribed to the mailing list for about a week. This is my first posting to the group. I am simply OVERWHELMED by the concern that has been shown to fellow members of the club, particularly to help Kyle with his shredded D35. I am proud to associate myself with you and look forward to meeting you at a future trail run.

Also, a big public thanks to Rick Beer for helping me with my MT/R's. If you need tires, he is the guy to see.

John,
Regardless of how (or where) the CV mounts, the driveline angles, still,
must be corrected.. The driveshaft is going to be shorter than it currently
is, when you get the CV work done. You'll still have to rotate the pinion at
the rear diff to get all the angle at the CV joint.. Whether the cam bolts
will offer enough adjustment for that or not, I don't know. Keep everyone
informed.
Also a lot of the weird driving quirks that you're experiencing, with only
the front driveshaft, is due to the wider tires and the change in
backspacing that has altered the Ackerman Angle and the scrub radius.. These
are both really important for turning..

Best,
Fred

Subject: Used Grand Cherokee

Hi Mike,

Until recently, I owned a 1996 Grand Cherokee since new an put 145K miles on it (well, the ex put the first 87K - but I maintained it!). It is a V8 Laredo 4x4. I also owned an early XJ Cherokee for many years prior to the Grand. I would still own it if the Ex had not gotten it!

With this in mind I would recommend a '96 or newer Grand Cherokee- they went to 4wheel disc brakes, a bigger rear axle for the V8 (318cubic inch - 5.2 liter) The rear axle is an aluminum center section version of the Dana 44 - some folks had trouble with these.

The problems I had were few - the factory battery died at about 2 years. The Water pump went out at about 90K at which time I noticed the radiator was also leaking and it was replaced. I had the overheating problem discussed on the list lately and a new fan clutch fixed that at about 110K. Of course the brakes were done about every 50K. The only time it stranded me on the road was when the cast pot metal power steering bracket broke - it appeared that one of three bolts that held it to the engine had broken earlier - the $20 replacement was in stock at the dealer! I did change the oil every 3-5K miles and changed the other fluids at reasonable intervals. The track bar needed replacement after the lift had been in place for a couple years - $60 from AutoZone).

My favorite would be a 1998 5.9 limited. More power, loaded, 16" wheels, factory louvers on the hood!

There seem to be quite a few on the used market - I would think there would be several affordable choices out there.

Feel free to email if I can help answer any questions or give any more opinions!:

Best Regards,

Dave Montgomery

Subject: Advice on buying a used Grand Cherokee

Hi All,

Well unfortunately the wife was involved in a car accident, not her

fault, and our Civic was totaled. So we are looking to moving up and

get a used Grand Cherokee. I was hoping for some input. Having only

owned CJs I am not familiar with the common problems one might look

for when buying a used Grand Cherokee. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Mike

So Kyle...what's the latest scoop?

Will the axle that Steve offered work out for you?

And to put some prices in perspective (basically I agree with Stu), let's say you wanted to buy a cheap axle (like mine!) for $100. Sure, it's complete and ready to bolt in...to a YJ...with 4.10 gears. If you want to stick with 3.73 gears, you'll spend $150 for new ring/pinion, $75 or so for install kit and $150 for install labor. I still don't know what you drive, but if you don't have a YJ, you'll need to weld on the spring buckets and control arm mounts.

If you do have a YJ, my axle might be a good deal. You can get those 3.73's off the list for $30. My install hardware (bearings, seals and whatnot) only had a few runs on it, so you may not need to buy anything as long as the gear installer thinks they can get the pinion bearing off without damaging it or the seal (many times it's easier to just cut it in half with a grinder to remove, but is not always necessary) . Randy Siade is the best person to answer gearing issues on here, it seems.

Anyway, let me know if you need anything...even if it just turns out to be some "elbow grease". When are you planning on working on this thing?

Last thing, I got one of those t-case plugs from a tranny shop a while ago. Walked in and asked where they get them, and they just gave me one. Unfortunately, it's long been lost...

I pulled my rear driveshaft to get home on my 97 TJ, I did not leak
a drop out driving home off the trail all the way home. Since the
driveshaft just slips over the end and does not actually go into any
part of the transfer case can someone tell me where it would leak
from?

The changed the design of the 231 for the TJ's, adding a seal to the rear
output.. The YJ's did *not* have this seal, and would leak if the rear
driveshaft was removed.

The part at the top about the magazines is mostly true...

I haven't checked every one, but it seems to be at least mostly true. It is also certainly worth considering that many of these "French" companies employ many Americans, Arizonians, and AZ_VJC members even...

Cute....but is it all true, has it been researched to verify the
facts as stated or just more spam which has been circulating in
abundance lately about the war in Iraqi, the French and on and on.
Some are for, some are against. Anyone can type up something that may
look credible, but is it? It may be written by someone who has
nothing better to do with their time than to express their personnel
opinions however distorted, prejudiced, and misinformed it may be.
This particular message is not even signed by any author, let alone a

not make it true. Especially on the internet because its free, easy
to do, and generally anonymous. I am not taking a shot at you Mike,
as I believe you probably just received it and forward it like most
everyone does.

It will leak from the rear output. I have pulled mine a few times and it
leaks profusely. There is a seal that keeps the fluid in right near the
edge of case. This is how the slip part keep lubricated.

If the rear drive shaft output on the transfer case did not leak for you
it is probably because your transfer case is empty of fluid already.

Subject: Re: TJ flares

I put some on my YJ. Assuming you will be trimming metal, here's my
tips:

Rear: Start trimming at the back of the rear fender opening and work
your way forward. You should be able to take off about 3" at the
rear and then will taper down to zero about two thirds of the way
forward. That's the point where you reach the front side of the
fender well and there isn't really any metal to trim there or else
you'll open up the passenger compartment. You should be able to
retain the lip of the flare itself. Some people trim the lip off the
flare but then it looks like a "hack" job. Keeping the lip on the
flare makes it look "factory" (if you care about that).

Note that as you trim the metal along the rear side of the rear
fender opening, you will encounter a vertical support panel that runs
between the inner fender well wall and the outer panel that you're
trimming. You'll need to trim through that and then trim off the
part that extends lower than what you've trimmed off.

Also, there is a plastic liner that sits under the rear corners and
folds up into the fender well where it is attached with some of those
plastic push-in connectors. Many people trim this off at the point
where the metal was trimmed. I trimmed mine slightly but left enough
extra in place that I could fold it up and reattached it using new
holes I drilled for those plastic connectors. This also creates a
more "finished" look and it protects the fuel filler hose on the
driver's side.

Front: You will be able to trim off no more than one inch of metal
along the rear and top side of the fender opening. At the bend where
the fender meets the front cap, I chose to trim the flare lip and
leave the metal lip intact to help maintain structural rigity of the
front part of the fender and front cap. Otherwise, I left the lip on
the flare to create a more "factory" appearance.

I'd be happy to show you my Jeep if you want to meet me somewhere. I
live in northwest Phoenix (39th Ave and Happy Valley Rd).

Subject: CV driveshaft questions

I need some info help. I am getting a CV driveshaft for my TJ, and I
am trying to find the best place in town that has the best prices and
also the length I shold get and any other info that I might need. This
is what I got for mods and such That might change some advice:
03' TJ - Rubicon (don't flame me on that one)
Auto
4.5" RE 7000 lift

Now I haven't put on a BB or MM lift yet, but I will (as I will be
raising the tranny mount also to help on clearence probs. So the
biggest question I got is the length??? Will the stock length work or
do I need a longer one made?

Thanks,

John Long

Subject: Re: CV driveshaft questions

If you are keeping the stock output shaft on your transfer case you
will need an adaptor plate because there is no CV drive shaft that will
fit the stock bolt pattern. I ordered a Tom Woods drive shaft and
adaptor plate from Jason at 4x4groupbuy.com. All I had to do was
measure from the center of the transfer case output shaft to the center
line of one of the u-joint saddles on the diff yoke and Tom Woods took
care of getting me the correct length. It works fine and no
vibrations. I also have a Rubicon with RE long arms, 4.5" RE springs,
1" MM, and 1" body lift.

When I called Dicks Driveline they wanted the same measurement but
could not supply the adaptor plate.

Have a good day
Brad
